Jesus man, I should have learned this ages ago. Folding out the notes of the pentatonic scale over the 6th string gives you all the positions of the other pentatonic figures in an instant. What've I been doing all this time?🤔
Hi Steve, A friend gifted me a Squire Strat and I purchased a HB35 Plus. I just started guitar at 63 on November 20, 2022, 40 days now. Music is not new too me as I started in 3rd grade on clarinet and l played 5 instruments by 9th grade. I immediately started an ever intensifying focus on the 5 petatonic shapes. These were very foreign at first but I have gradually gotten more comfortable. Now comes this video of yours and a whole new "aha" of pentatonics has occured. I am so excited in seing your demonstration, can't wait to get into my practice tomorrow morning. It seems I just get more excited as I go. Now averaging 2 hours per day on the strings practice while putting in another 1-2 hours studying theory, chords, and other areas of guitar. Just can't wait for each day's practice but my fingers are taking one hell of a beating. I can't see where I will be in one year but that too is thrilling to imagine. I am highly motivated to constantly learn. It's like marathon training, you don't just go out and run 26.2 miles, you've got to put in the training. Thank you so much for your excellent lessons and material. What great work you do. Ciao

Thank you. Just had that light bulb moment!! Pivotal piece to the puzzle.
The simplest way to learn this is to drill the 1st position literally hundreds of times front and backwards then drill the 2nd position up-and-down front and backwards hundreds of times. Then try to find a way to link the 2 positions together with a slide at a certain fret any frent it doesn't matter. It just has to be consistent after you get those 1st 2 positions down drill the 3rd position hundreds of times. You can find charts online that have each of the positions in different colours. This really makes it super easy to actually see the positions like hes talking about.

What confuses me is if we move to a new position and start with say a C why isn’t that considered a C pentatonic scale or is there no such thing ?
If you're playing the First Position starting on the C note, then yes. If you're playing, say the Third Position on the C note, then it will still be an A minor pentatonic. The notes in the A minor pentatonic are A, C, D, E, G. The C scale would have C, D#, F, G, A#. The notes always dictate your scale, regardless of your position or starting point.
It has to do with the notes in the scale. The tonic is in different places depending on the pentatonic position you play but the notes are the same. So a C played in a different position may be on the third string. As for minor and major, the 6th note on the major scale of whatever key you are in is called the relative minor because it uses the exact same notes as that scale. For example A minor, A being the 6th note, is relative to C major because it uses the same notes. Because of this you can play A minor and C maj using the exact same scale.
Because it would be a mode of the root pentatonic scale. There is a scale that exists for every single key and each one has its modes for every note. As long as you know the structure of the parent scale, the modes are easy to figure out by simply playing through the same exact note sequence just starting and ending on a different note in the scale

Great Lesson..one idea I came up with ...pretty obvious...draw it in a notebook with a matrix and keep it in front of you while playing..and play with a backing track.

This is all intersting theory & chromatics, and yet when I solo, I don't think of scales like that, necessarily. I understand major & minor pentatonic scales, and yet I just seem to go for it. I know that sounds stupid, right? I just tend to hear melodies. I can't explain it. Nevertheless, it doesn't take away from your lesson as I like to at least know what I'm doing, even though I don't, conciously, use theory. Thank you.

Hello! your videos are the stuff of legend and I appreciate your work, When looking on google to find the 5 shapes they always start with (E)1-4(A)1-4. I thought the first position was (E) 1-4 (A) 1-3... Could you clarify this for me?

Those 5 notes are the 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 notes from the A minor diatonic scale. To get minor pentatonic from minor diatonic, you remove the 2nd and 6th notes. Which are B and F, in the key of A minor.
Also, the A minor diatonic scale is the relative minor scale to the C major diatonic scale. Which means, both scales have all the same notes, the only difference is A minor diatonic starts with A:
A B C D E F G
And C major diatonic starts with C:
C D E F G A B
Remember, as mentioned above, to get minor pentatonic from minor diatonic, you remove the 2nd and 6th notes.
A minor diatonic → A B C D E F G
A minor pentatonic → A C D E G
And if you want to get major pentatonic from major diatonic, you remove the 4th and 7th notes.
C major diatonic → C D E F G A B
C major pentatonic → C D E G A
Basically, just about everything in music theory is based on the C major diatonic scale. :-)

When Steve talks about pentatonic positions, the positions go in the same order as the notes in the scale. Each position starts on the 6th string, on each of the five notes in the scale.
In the video, Steve's playing A minor pentatonic. The notes in A minor pentatonic are
A C D E G
The first note in A minor pentatonic is A, so to find the first position of A minor pentatonic in Steve's system, you find the A note on the 6th string. And that's at the 5th fret. :-)
The second position would start on C (8th fret), the 3rd on D (10th fret), the 4th on E (12th fret) and the 5th on G (15th fret).
And once you learn the shapes of those positions, you can use them to solo in any key.

Thanks for watching and commenting! And don't get discouraged, most guitarists struggle with scale positions at first.
Back up about a minute in the video (about 5:00 or so) and Steve is talking about "the back side" and "the front side" of scale positions.
For the first position, the front side is all at the 5th fret. But the back side is 8s and 7s, as you play through the first position.
When you move up to the second position, the back side from the 1st position is now your front side. You don't start with all 5s, you start with 8s and 7s.
And if you move up to the third position, the back side from the second position is now the front side.
Hope this makes sense! :-)

hey great video, why does it go 7 9 on the 3rd string for the second position?
Hi. The notes of the scale in second position are C - D - E - G and A. The first octave starts on string 6 with C - D, then str. 5 E - G and on str 4 the note A. Then the scale starts over and we play the second octave again, C - D - E - G and A. Here we get the notes C on str. 4 and on str 3 the notes D and E. These notes are found on frets 7 (D) and 9 (E). And then we complete the scale with strings 2 and 1. The complete shape with strings and frets is 8 - 10 (6); 7 - 10 (5); 7 - 10 (4); 7 - 9 (3); 8 - 10 (2) and finally 8 - 10 (on str. 1). Hope this clarifies and answers your question. 🙂

Thanks for watching, George! Just remember, there's 5 notes in the pentatonic scale. And there's a position for each one of those 5 notes, so there's 5 position.
You find each position by finding the note on the 6th string. For example, the A minor pentatonic scale has the notes A C D E G.
The first position of A minor pentatonic starts on the 6th string, 5th fret, because that's an A note. The second position starts on the 8th fret of the 6th string (C), the third position starts at the 10th fret (D), the fourth position starts at the 12th fret (E) and the 5th position starts at the 15th fret (G).
Each position is a little different, but if you memorize all 5 positions, you can use them for any key, just by shifting them up or down the fretboard.

Nice, but how do you figure out by yourself how the scale goes for the "backside" further down the neck to be able to fit everything together?
By counting whole-steps and half-steps?
The point is only play those 5 notes he named that make up the A minor pentatonic scale. Use whatever method you like for locating them. Counting whole steps and half steps is one way.
