I was STAN KANN LAST ASSISTANT AT THE FABULOUS FOX THEATRE 1969 - 1978. A INTERNSHIP FOR 11 years. STAN TOUGHT ME MANY THINGS ABOUT THIS INSTRUMENT; INWHICH MY FATHER INSTALLED THIS INSTRUMENT HE WORKED FOR THE WURLITZER COMPANY: TO MY MENTOR : STAN THANK YOU FOR SO MANY YEAR OF EXPERIENCE YOU GAVE TO ME. WITH A GREAT SHOWMAN SHIP THAK YOU. SINCERELY : THEATRE ORGANIST GERRY MARIAN:
Thank you Steve for sharing this wonderful piece with Stan. I spent many Sat afternoons at the Fox. I had learned to check the paper for showtimes so I could arrive just before the end of the first of the double features. Then I see Stan play 3 times between watching the two movies. Got to met Stan several times and he was always just a delight to be with. Stan you are so missed.
I was most fortunate to have known this exciting man for many years...both in St. Louis and LA. He had a command of the theater organ that would make anyone cry. I heard him at the St. Louis Fox at his final concert. He was the savior of this fabulous instrument in the 1950's and he enchanted people with his artistry. I cannot say too many good things about this wonderful human being.
The late STAN KANN WAS A GREAT ARTIST ON THE MIGHTY WURLITZER FOX THEATER ALSO RUGERI’ S RESTAURANT NOT TO MANY PEOPLE KNOW THE WURLITZER AT RUGGERI’ s RESTAURANT WAS HIS OWN INSTRUMENT. AGAIN THANK STAN FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE 10 year internship at the ST. LOUIS FABULOUS FOX THEATER . SINCERELY THEATER ORGAN GERRY MARIAN.
I remember Stan Kann on the Tonight Show as a boy of 8 or 9 years old, I got the biggest laughs from him demonstrating his assorted gadgets! I have just found out (I'm 56 years old now) that he is a very accomplished musician. What beautiful music you make, Stan. God bless you!
I kept expecting the organ to start singing. He had it doing everything else. A magnificent instrument with a remarkable man on the console. I nearly called it a keyboard but that doesn't do it justice. That makes the controls of an airliner look like a child's toy. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
The organ as you can see has 3 buttons for the little elevator which is called a screw lift. When you stop the video at 1:03, you can see the elevator controls for the organ. Also the orchestra lift has also been raised as well. The elevator for the organ has 3 stops. The basement, 1 is the first row seats. That is when also the orchestra elevator is level with the first row seats. 2 is what some would call the stage level. The stage lift doesn't go quite as high as the actual stage does, but it goes to as high as the top of the black barrier. The orchestra pit is so big, you can fit a great big truck in there. Nowdays, it may all depend on the organist on what tour is going on. Some might bring it up to only the first row seat level and some would being it up close to the stage level.
A treasure chest of musical excellence here in Stan and what a character he was. An early 20th century Stereophonic pallet of musical joy and a real marvel of engineering that is the Mighty Wurlitzer!!
When I was young I would take a date to the Fox for a movie and to hear Stan play. The girls were ALWAYS impressed with the organ and Stan coming up thru the floor. I remember the cost for TWO people to get into the Fox back then was $1.10
Best demonstration of a great theater organ I've ever seen . Thanks!

Loved that man with all my heart. He had such talent
Listening to the wonderful voicing of this organ brings back memories of the Barton organ in the Chicago Stadium...

Dear Stan...I still miss you to this day.
