- Entering the narrow unmarked channel to Hilton Head SC the Wild Wright's get hit by a vicious squall. Odessa a 65 McGregor is light (20,000lbs) and fast (26 kt), but storms are always a worry. Check out the YT channel for crazy stuff and the blog offthegridadventures.blogspot.com - IG @alvinski100
I'd add trysail and storm-jib. Unless you're very confident about your engine and stability, storming on engine only may play out rough or hardly possible.
I live in Missouri and am not a sailor. I googled "open ocean" because I wanted to see it and feel it. Thank you for sharing. Nature is amazing and awesome! Your spirit to face the seas AND share with others is a beautiful thing. Thank you again.

You can look on my UA-cam channel if you want to see storms filmed by me in open oceans
This ain't open ocean this is coastal cruising.
Thank you. Your vids are awesome, an look so professional. Thanks again.
Scary as all hell to a landlubber like me.
I admire your strength and tenacity !
God Bless to you and your brave family (crew) !
Curious how you ran the sheets as the wind built... Double reefed? Storm sail? Head-sail only? etc...
There's no reason to be terrified once you're confident that boats are designed not to sink... it's amazing how a little time sailing builds your confidence.
if u flip over and dont mayday now ur stuck drifting to the ocean. Id scream like jack sparrow.....''RUN! Land!! What port??? Didnt say port...said LAND!''
Yep... sounds right Spencer, given a different situation we'd have 3 reefs in the main and the inner foresail half out. But we have a 9ft draft and at the beginning of a 10 mile double dogleg 60ft wide unmarked channel with barely underwater rock bars on both sides. Not a bright idea with kids onboard mate. The US east coast is ridiculously shallow and the charts are often completely wrong.
How did you keep any water drops from getting on the camera lens?
Yes. Beni... when you're not afraid to be embarrassed it's amazing how much fun you can have.
Love you Blog and your vids, have subscribed. What software do you use to produce and edit your vids?
I’m glad you were able to avoid the full brunt of it. That’s a microburst - a.k.a. White Squall. Pitched me 45 degrees with zero sail, while dragging a more than ample anchor. Blistering hot summer day, and the rain and wind came ice cold. I gained a new level of respect for Mother Nature that day. Her will stops for no one.
That was some dark cloud there.... Must've felt good to be on a strong boat.!

I live in a house and we get bad storms here in Northern Ontario and I get afraid we are gonna get snafu'd, I can't imagine being on a bloody boat.
My respect !!
please be safe.

God Bless !
Did you have any sail up when the squall hit or was she just heeling under bare poles?
Everything in this video pretty much sums up my worst fears.
Dark ominous clouds over an endless sea
Hi, how am I best to contact you about using this clip in a television documentary? Thanks

I'm glad you made it out of that storm unscathed to sail another day. It looked bad and it could have been a different outcome.
Sorry, just corrected the link to the blog for those that are interested offthegridadventures.blogspot.com
That is an impressive storm and they are always a risk in open water sailing. I think the seas that bothered me the most were the heavy, big wind driven, following seas. It never happened to me, and I’ve be through a lot of rough water. The loss of rudder control just scared the hell out of me. We’ve broached a couple of times with bare poles with little damage, save a great coffee mug. The idea of losing the rudder and pitchpoling was the worse case sceneries that I imagined. I don’t know about the rest of you but I could do heavy seas all day long, as long as they weren’t pushing me hard.
Stay safe, sailors!😎
Lost steering myself, in the marina on the Columbia River. What scares me is loosing steerage while traveling 2.5 knots down-current into wing dams and rocky basaltic cliffs. Got to get this oat back to the Sea! Of course ... boats pitchpole over the Columbia Bar surf break all the time. I;ll trade fast-moving air for fast moving water any time! : )
Rudders don't like force coming from behind. The more degrees of turn you have dialed it puts the rudder at greater risk. When using a motor and prop, what the prop comes out of the water and is turning when it reenters the water it spins in a foam of water/air for a while and that can cost you control. I took care to cut power when the stern came out of the water. I never liked following seas very much. It was fun surfing when I was new and stupid.
happy to see you all made it threw safely.
KTS is knots... like Nautical Miles... which are a little longer than statute miles used by landlubbers. So 45kts is 52 miles an hour. A month later we got slammed by the Dorachio that blew through NJ 91kts or 105 miles an hour... that one was really scary.
Yep... sailing around a big land mass like the US means storms... I miss sailing in the Caribbean where every day is pretty much perfect.
"When in doubt - stay out."
Wow... thanks so much for sharing a part of your beautiful experience... wish i could have been there.... .what would I do?... well.. first off.. i cant see how anyone would not have the inclination to make a baby in that moment.. but ... ... all that goodness asside... the ladies voice... is about as close to a perfect match for the beauty of the sound of the sea as i can imagine...
i think you guys should upgrade your sound gear so we don't get the feedback on the mic but have a similar sound experience as you do... and zoom out.. and give a broader look at the horizon and everything else in context to the deck.... your experience is very special... very very beautiful... .i am afraid of the ocean... been hit by a stingray once.. and the idea of sharks, and the unkown, just scares the heck out of me... but seeing your adventure.... o shoot man... .seeing what you see.... seems very very valuable to me...it is important that i and others are able to respect you and what you did while you were alive. .... for fun... or business... all of it good.
I sure hope you guys are doing well... an i sure hope i get to see more and better still....
ps... showing the video... without music.. .... makes it far better... her voice.... and the wind and sea.. is exactly what makes it best... we can identify with it cleanly... purely ... I bet you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Old adage - " the time to reef, is when you first think about it." carries over to ALL aspects of life. M
Hi Johnny - we use Final Cut to edit videos.
I've often dreamed of sailing on a 65' McGregor. That's been my dream boat to get when I retire as I'd like to travel and the speed would be great.
I'm only a novice sailor with less than 12 years experience but it appears you did a great job.
65 McGregor your dream boat wtf. I would own a macgregor if it was given to me.
The part of the Al was played with gusto and verve and Doreen had a delightful cameo role. It was a puckish satire of contemporary mores, a droll spoof aimed more at the heart than the head. As for me I'm planning on spending the next three days in a brothel.
Link to the blog internet page doesn't work!!!
Holy shit that was nuts! Awesome. You guys rock.
I sail a Nonsuch 26 Cat Rig on the North Atlantic 35 knot wind double reef yesss.......
What is barometer reading?
Did the lady come right at the end of the video?
By far the worst storm I've ever been in has been on lake michigan during the 1985 mackinac race from chicago yacht club to mackinac island.
Over 100 sailboats pulled out of the race and one sunk.
Anyone that's been on lake michigan during a storm will understand why so many ships have sunk
Storm wall, always exciting!
Stay safe.... admire you for living the dream but please avoid storms.
I just shows you how fast the weather changes in the open ocean. No was hurt no damage to boat. I can;t wait to get my new catalina 355 and get out there.
This ain't open ocean ffs. Did you see the map at the beginning?
Ya...Been there a few times up here in the Chesapeake bay. Looked pretty bad there for a few minutes (they all do) till its over...then you talk about it...Fair Winds S/V Surfer Girl
I spent fifteen years cruising the east coast from Key West to Baltimore. I must have sailed in and out of fifty thunderstorms. They are always nerve racking. Best way to deal with them is to take down your sails, turn on your engine, put on the autopilot, go below and don't touch anything metal. Normally they don't last very long. They just shake you up, scarred the hell out of you, and then go their way. Some of them can pack winds as high as 80 knots. They also spawn waterspouts.
Do I hear Nancy Kerrigan at 1:27, did she sail with you?
This is my favorite comment... thanks Doug
Thats why I like a center cockpit with a hard dodger. Hope all is well - Bill
She's just calm as a cucumber. I'd be flipping out. 😂
Yep me too got the nervous oh no just watching it. Still have but I like that feeling, ha kinda
The weather started getting rough....
Do you still own this boat?
Wooooooh!
That's right... we've been in many squalls. The best one was in the Spanish Virgin's that hit 50kts for 5 minutes... we we're anchoring at the time and it ripped my wife's bikini top off as she was on the bow. The worst was the Dorachio that hit us in Egg Harbor... topped at 90kts and 60kts sustained for over an hour... I wish we had a camera on for that one.
Good call
Hard Core !
Looks like the type of weather we all ways get caught up in :/
45 knots is not a storm but just a gale, and from the video it seems it lasted very short. Probably it was just a gust. A sailor must use a precise terminology. Anyway you did well to turn out.
Yes, storms are big squalls... squalls are fun unless they come in the middle of the night... storms on the other hand are another matter all together.
Wow, ugly clouds. . . I've been caught in one of those, dragged two oversized anchors 600 feet, caught the edge of a ledge luckily, almost went over the shelf.
Eew! Good decision. In those conditions I would have done the same. Go for sea room!
I think they call that the calm before the storm ☠️😳
@lungarotta- In that case use the correct terminology yourself, 41kts to 47kts is Severe gale not gale.
~~~~~~~~ oooohhhh!!!!
Good job. Glad I'm sitting here watching your "fun" rather than being in it!
Shiver me timbers! Batten down the hatches!
noting compared to the roaring 40s. this is a sneeze !!
So a picture of a deck and the sky...
Did they died
There's no time to get seasick... it's like being on a roller coaster.
I love roller cossters:)
No lightning?, day at the beach.
Good decision skipper. Stay out where it's safer.
+Terry Peake Have to agree Terry, I could feel the nerves building in me just watching that darkness descending!
wait, so did they make it? must know!
If they didn't, this video wouldn't be released.
I was being facetious :P
bulok69 Ah, ok.
ROTF. YOU TELL EM
Just wait it out, usually it's just a short 30 min or so
"HUGE STORM" caused half a million clicks... What next? Huge waves of 3ft high or miniscule tsunami?
Shhhh...
OH ! MY ! GOD ! ! (when omg! just isn't enough) a storm like that scares me on dry land !
Apparently you got thru it ok. My heart was beating for you.
Im view # 301,675 and like #350. Subscribe # 7,157...............
You all be careful out there.
Been here .. .there done that ... off of Cape D' Aglar. Not fun for seven hours.
Happy sailing Alvin, keep an eye on the weather and don't Bengie get to you, he clearly need therapy for his BS aversion.
Bare poles... we've learnt that lesson, drop em while you can.
Any chance of more vid's alvinski100?
Yes... more videos are in the works. I really need to know what my subs want more of. Sailing, turbine racers, general crazy things? You have a voice, just let me know.
alvinski100
heck you are busy! Sailing of course! Even though some vids are old, they are most enjoyable, Russel NZ looked as it was when I was there about the time you sailed in. Love the heavy weather Vids, I am an old sailer and never had the means to film my trips, so yours bring back some great forgotten memories.
alvinski100 "You have a voice, just let me know."
Up your production values. Less hype and edited-in woman gasping sounds. Save it for your own bed. I sure do not want to hear it.
You just need lieutenant Dan screaming in the crows nest to make this the ultimate experience
This made my day. xD
на видео это выглядит очень жутко а в реальности еще страшнее . попасть в такой шторм это еще тот атракцион :)
Blech, can't imagine being on that boat during that. Seasickness.
That was close, hairy even with a boat that size.
Hey. It must be really frightnening being in a sail boat in bad weather. Such a small engine, when you cant use the sail. Isnt is easy to like be driven by the waves because the lack of power? I like myself better in my 200hp windy :p
Nevermind, this one is 65ft long. But with smaller sailboats isnt it worse?
Where was the storm? Actually this is quite normal sailing weather here in Finland.
A typical summer squall off the US east coast, we saw much worse but filming was not recommended.
never head back out to sea unless you hit a hard time getting back safely. Don't just think you will have trouble wait and continue. storms can last days out at sea and be much worse, check the weather fax.
I've seen worse on much smaller vessels. Personally, that one would have me hoisting a bit of sail and heading as close into it as I could. Thing didn't even last long enough for the sea to build man. I never could understand those people who heave to just because the winds hit 24 kts either. I'd rather be sailing on the rail then just sitting there bobbing around.
65 foot boat and they are worried about storms?
Ooo
"2/20/12 9:09am
Even the rich are sinking in Europe: the 198-foot (60.2-meter) superyacht Yogi sunk under a Force 8 storm in the Mediterranean Sea on Friday."
yeah a 65 foot boat is unsinkable bro, just like the titanic
Its a 65 foot McGregor not a 65 foot Oyster, Hylas or Discover ect.. I'd worry too.
Edward Guthy It's hardly a fukin ocean liner mate is it?
70 knots, that the storm, this video is for tourists :)))
I never like to see anyone make mistakes but then a dedicated sailor will learn from them.
And I also think that the arm-chair sailors doing the slagging have never been out in anything more than 15 - 20 knots. So please shut up.
The Odessa crew are out there 'doing it'. Your only criticising.
I actually hold four world records in boating, including the smallest powerboat to cross the Atlantic, while I don't think it was that big of a storm, I think it is cool and i am sure a little scary for them, and lets agree that there is a little marketing in their video title.
Sir i couldn't agree with u more
@@CupRoyale A lot of marketing Ralph :) how big was your transatlantic powerboat?
Yeah that was a squall not a storm!
Sky of black. What a day!
Pull up your pants......Get the "Rum & Coke with some ice and head below!!!!!
LOL. Never mind the pants. Sail naked. LOL
Don't be a pussy... whiskey!!
These kinds of weather events are routine for professionals and well trained, experienced amateurs. What is it about your experience that makes it worthy of a YT video?
Hey Basil, how's Manuel doing :)
I used to live down the road from the actual Fawlty Towers B&B building used in the TV show.
It was a fun squall and the lesson was don't run into a tight navigation situation, stay in deep water and have a cup of tea after it passes. We've witnessed many people run for shore and get into trouble during a short weather events in florida.
I'm wondering what makes a YT worthy video ?
@@alvinski100 Manuel is fine, but we're all getting older, even me and l'm working hard at being at least as much of an asshole my grandfather.
Dude, 45 knots is a huge storm? In Macgregor 65 ULB design you should have planned to go straight back out and even consider going in, they're skimmers, not heavy weather sea boats. Anyway, good luck.
This is Hell
Rough!!!!
Yikes!
huge storm, monster storm, vicious storm,
how about just storm
radio boys there ARE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF STORMS!!!! JUST LIKE S FIRE. FOOD FIRE IS NOT CONSIDERED BY FIREMEN IN INDIANAPOLIS
I was expecting more but Im really happy they were safe
make this with about 33 feet...than i say respekt........but under motor with that kind of big bigger biggest boat.......
In huge storms you don't have time to get a camera out... you want a huge storm, get off the couch and go sailing... it feels 1000% more real than watching vids on YT
then dont name it HUGE STORM
plus im not sitting on my couch im actually watching this while in a HUGE storm
She sounds like my wife ,,another back seat driver
Hey looks like fun to me!!! Beat the sea or die.
