Richard Scarry's Busytown PC Game Comparison: The Delivery Truck

- Here's a mini-series I am doing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of my favorite childhood PC games: "Richard Scarry's Busytown!" Here I will be comparing the original 1993 MS-DOS version (which I had as a kid back in the 90s) with its' enhanced 1999 remake.
Here's an installment covering another popular section of the game: the Delivery Truck, where they let young Huckle Cat drive the truck around Busytown to make the deliveries. But since Huckle's too young to drive, he gets into all sorts of mishaps, and Sergeant Murphy has to keep pulling him over!

Happy 30th anniversary to Richard Scarry's Busytown.
Holy crap I remember playing this in Kindergarten way back. I remember being more focused on crashing into random things than actually delivering stuff.
Lol same! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
This game makes it look like Sergeant Murphy is the only person employed by the Busytown Police
I believe we see plenty of unnamed police officers in other Richard Scarry media, but Sergeant Murphy & Officer Flossy I think are the only two named ones.
HAPPY 30th Richard Scarrys Busytown!
This game is pure nostalgia
In the version that I had, anytime Huckle crashed, he or Lowly would say something in response, such as "Oh no!", "Lookout!", or "Move off the road!"
Maybe that was one of the older builds, prior to the more commonly-found version 1.3 (which is seen here). The 1999 remake is largely based off version 1.3 of the DOS version.
Likely, yeah.@@ZakWolf
Wait really? I never had that happen (I guess I had the 1.3 version that Zak speaks of though).
@@ZakWolf The Sega Genesis version retained the "Oh no" dialogue, but not the other two
Something I noticed in the 1999 version is that Huckle looks like he's frowning whenever the truck's facing left (which of course fits for when he inevitably gets into accidents, but not otherwise given his normally happy nature).
0:23 The least you could do is say hello to each other!
0:43 Much like the section you covered before this one it's an easy way of doing that (& I'd say they did a good job with recording most of the words to match the other pieces of dialogue: some of the words _do_ sound weird though).
2:02 "Go-Go-Gadget General Reaction!"
2:27 Interesting how the police station is the only location in the 1993 version to have both animation & sound from the building itself when you deliver something (which are the doors).
2:44 The syncing seems a _little_ off there.
2:51 Now why do you suppose his mouth isn't animated?
2:59 Layering error!
3:02 Guess so: he seems to be familiar with & have a thing for the food industry after all. Also note how the ice cream you deliver literally just puts a duplicate of the ice cream bowl that's already in the shop over the latter (I mean come on: you couldn't have had the box appear next to the bowl instead?).
3:13 They would of course have seemed weird in the 1993 version given the male voice you always hear.
3:47 "Oops, that is not my, foot"...oh wait, wrong section.
3:58 "Then why are you even at the school!?"? Is he from somewhere else in this section or...?
4:32 Wonder why they decided to randomize things up a bit there considering everything else is always the same.
5:07 Note that in this version there's no crossing guard: Miss Honey helps the chicks cross instead.
5:41 Man, Sergeant Murphy's not fooling around when it comes to response time is he: compared to the original version he appears _instantly._
5:45 5:48 Okay: who left that garbage bin too far out from the curb? (at least it has more animation than just a sprite change along with flying away from the direction of impact in the 1999 version, along with a better sound effect)
5:50 Poor rabbit: just trying to do his job & dig a hole & he's interrupted by some kid who can't drive.
6:01 "HOLY SH*T!"
6:05 Okay, okay, calm down Mr. pig: it won't happen again, I swear!
6:08 (keys radio) Yeah we're gonna need a tow truck... (unkeys) (the 1993 version looks more convincing if you ask me since the truck's front wheels are visibly submerged in the water)
6:12 I'm assuming they removed those since they figured they were too difficult for most players to navigate.
6:17 "AW CRAP!"
6:23 6:32 6:51 6:53 I AM!
6:35 One interesting thing I noticed is that every time Murphy makes a turn in the 1993 version his sprite changes slightly (he looks like he's hanging off his motorcycle due to the G-forces from the turn): neat detail in an otherwise "limited" game. Another thing I noticed as well is that Murphy's sergeant chevrons on his arm are facing the wrong way: down instead of up (which is apparently also the case in Richard Scarry's books as well: wonder how that came to happen).
6:45 6:48 It is, but Huckle clearly doesn't know how to!
6:56 6:58 That's the problem: Huckle doesn't have one.
7:02 I knew it, I knew that would happen!
7:20 _That_ line doesn't fit...
7:37 Jump cut! (in the game mind you)
Regarding 3:58, that fox is supposed to be from the park across the street from the school.
@@ZakWolf Ah I see.
5:35 I noticed the frog in the 1999 version isn’t anthropomorphic. If Busytown had a pet store with pet cats and dogs for sale or a zoo with non-anthropomorphic versions of the anthropomorphic animals, that would make things even weird.
Also, does Sergeant Murphy seem OK with kids driving vehicles? Even someone like him should know that’s not legal.
5:35 Talk about Furry Confusion.
Those who practice wickedness will not be delivered by it. It is finished
Happy 30th anniversary to Richard Scarry's Busytown, a PC game to my childhood.
Also, did you know that it's also the 16th anniversary of WordGirl, one of my childhood shows?
7:03 What's that sound effect from and how did you do it on Huckle Cat's driver's license?! paint?!
I made the driver's license on Photoshop. The "wa wa" sound is from the Hollywood Edge's Cartoon Trax sound effects library, and is one of my favorite sound effects to use in my YTPs.
@@ZakWolfWhat's the next comparison?
Have you ever thought about doing comparisons to the Mario’s Early Years games on the SNES and the PC? Because there are some differences between the SNES version and the PC version.
I suspect Huckle followed in Bart Simpsons footsteps and got a fake ID so he could drive the delivery truck.🤔
Say, in the future, will you do a remake of your Hard Times in Busytown YTP?
Sweet, they have a cannabis dispensary in the middle of town 👏
Ah yes
Please deliver the PHAxTHoPHoN
Why didn't they have both the slide and the merry go round? It would make more sense for both of those to be at the park
Why do we have to deliver Mr Frumbles hat to the threft shop? Did he lose his hat and the delivery station found it or somethin?
I actually had the genesis version of busytown 6 of the activities in the pc 🖥 port are in the genesis game captain sully the delivery truck 🚚 the wind bruno's deli the fire 🔥 station 🚉 and building 👷♂️ a house 🏠
Kids can’t drive!
Why else did Sergeant Murphy keep pulling Huckle over? :P
@@ZakWolf touché.
@@ZakWolf 6:59: DEJA VU!
@@robbiewalker2831indeed. It’s from YTP: Hard Times in Busytown
