  • Here's a mini-series I am doing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of my favorite childhood PC games: "Richard Scarry's Busytown!" Here I will be comparing the original 1993 MS-DOS version (which I had as a kid back in the 90s) with its' enhanced 1999 remake.
Here's the installment I'm sure many of you were waiting for, where I compare both versions of Dr. Diane, the worst doctor in Busytown, whose answer to every patient's problem is to put a bandage on it, even if she's better-animated and voiced in the 1999 remake (actually voiced by a woman, compared to a man voicing her in the original with that New Jersey accent). But what if you had something worse than a simple bump or bruise or cut? Did she get her degree from Quack University or something?

I wonder how many malpractice lawsuits Dr. Diane would have due to her generic ‘I’ll put a bandage on it’? Also, is it possible she never studied things like operations, broken bones and other things like that that can’t be fixed with a simple bandage?

Probably overheard at the Novotrade studio in Hungary while they were developing the original version:
"Does anybody here know what a syringe sounds like?"
"Well I could just record me fast-fowarding my tape recorder and use it for the syringe"
"Okay then, get the recording equipment and the audio conversion software"

For the past 3 years of driving through South Carolina to and from work, I feel like the SCDOT uses this same approach for its highway maintenance and improvement projects. In other words, short-term solutions to long-term problems with absolute minimal effort.

As a New Englander, this also sounds like the approach of the MBTA when it comes to addressing problems with their service (Keolis has to deal with the commuter rail half)
I'm just surprised that "Dr. Diane" hasn't become slang for somebody who thinks a short-term solution to a long-term problem can also double as the long-term solution.

0:08 That's odd (especially since I think every other “gameplay section” of both versions plays the chorus).
0:34 I'd love to know why exactly they chose to do away with the randomness of the injuries (especially since if it was possible in the 1993 original it should definitely have been possible in the 1999 remake).
0:54 Always hilarious: *bop* "Yikes!" *bop* "Yikes!" *bop* "Yikes!" (on another note I'm pretty sure the "cut-short "boing" sound effect" is the somewhat-famous "Tod Dockstader "Boi-oi-oi-oing" sound effect, which I know best from the Gene Deitch era of _Tom & Jerry)_
1:29 Not sure I ever noticed Dr. Diane stand up like that when I'd play this section.
1:32 I'm assuming because the 1999 remake's devs were concerned about kids learning the word "pain" & what it means (& thus changed the line to the _much_ softer "There, now you'll be okay").
1:45 I thought that was mainly due to lazyness on the part of the developers (&/or because it was easier, quicker, & cheaper than recording every line separately).
2:01 That must've taken a fair bit of effort from both the "spriters" & the voice actor...
2:46 Oh yeah: never noticed that in the 1993 original (where his eyebrow is also conspicuously missing).
2:58 I honestly always thought she was either sticking the spoon in his mouth for seemingly no reason or to catch something that was coming out (mainly due to the angle of both the spoon & the patient's mouth which wouldn't suggest medicine being administered).
3:02 Oh Diane: bandage is your answer to _everything!_
4:08 I'm beginning to see a pattern here...
4:54 Literally no syringe makes noise like that (also going by the color of the syringe I assume that we're meant to infer that the vaccine was, for whatever reason, white, & the body of the syringe is blue, which is just weird).
5:23 A lazily reused line from earlier which doesn't fit at all with the context (& Dr. Diane _still_ insists on putting a bandage on her patient's nose even though his respiratory system seems to be in fine shape).
5:45 ...even though he's not heard exhaling through his nose at any other time.
6:02 While I can't say I ever heard that line while playing this section (probably because I always put each bandage where it's supposed to go), that dialogue is so awkwardly stitched together it's hilarious.
6:24 _Difficult?_ More like _impossible!_ (does Dr. Diane also realize that she would have likely suffocated her poor patient had he not had a still-unblocked nose by placing a bandage _on his mouth?)_
6:30 Only because you made it impossible for him to talk, you dimwit!
6:48 "Uh oh"? _That_ doesn't really fit there does it?
7:07 Is _that_ when that happens? (I saw it in your YTP from years ago but had no idea when it occurred as I never had it happen to me when I played the game)
In either version I'd say Dr. Diane is not a very good doctor: not only does she "prescribe" bandages for everything (not only that but they're placed on the patient's _clothing_ rather than on his bare skin like one is supposed to), but I'm not sure the other things she does (vaccination, administration of medicine, throat inspection, & reflex testing) really apply when it comes to that particular patient either (mainly since she didn't do any tests or further examination to determine if they were truly necessary). I think I have a new title/name for Dr. Diane: Dumbbell Diane.
Another thing: Dr. Diane is technically violating the Geneva Conventions by utilizing the red cross symbol that's specifically reserved for the Red Cross: she'd have to use another symbol like the Star Of Life or Rod Of Asclepius to not do so.
On another note: what did this elephant get himself into that earned him _that_ many injuries!? (including in places like his _eyebrow)_

    • @ZakWolf
      @ZakWolf  Рік тому +2

Maybe the elephant rolled around in broken glass or something? But if he did, then he'd probably look pretty bloody...
I always thought the sound of the syringe in the 1993 original was pretty funny, knowing that wasn't how they sounded in real life.
