Ohtsuka is striking effectively here. He is in the characteristic tall wado/jujutsu stance for mobility. The strike would come at a time when his oponent was least expecting it, from a direction that the oponent was completely unprepared for because of tai sabaki (attacking off-line). Ohtsuka's hips are leading the strike, and the damage would be exponential because the oponent would be running into the strike because of the tai sabaki (and using the opponent's energy against him). Ohtsuka has said in interviews that his style does not use the rough conditioning of the fists and other body parts to build calluses (like shorin ryu). So he is not striking the board here to toughen his fists. The use of the hips for striking are the secret to understanding what is happening in this video.
It's actually pretty amazing prophecy with that board I just wish I could have had been practicing on my karate more it could have strengthened the body mine and most importantly the spirit I just wish that my spirit would have been stronger much stronger is it is now 🥋👊😉👍🥋
All of the styles have something to offer. You might not like what you see here but you should remember that Otsuka studied Shotokan extensively and was an assistant instructor in Funakoshi's school. He knew Shotokan very well and was perfectly capable of hitting a makiwara in a way you might be more familiar with. To me it looks like he's simply toughening his hands. His credentials as a martial artist are beyond dispute. There's also a comment below that says that Shotokan is only good for sparring. That's simply not true. Funakoshi didn't believe that sparring was necessary for realistic training and preferred to emphasise kata. Some people theorise that this is way Otsuka parted company with Funakoshi and traditional Wado-Ryu actually focuses on sparring much more than traditional Shokotan.
it always hurts to see this kind of videos....Because there is many people who are looking for training videos, and I'm one of them, and to see this is awful....All is bad in his position. The makiwara allows a better understanding of a punch, how the body must contracted, the alignment of the elbow, the shoulder, the contraction of muscles in the belly.....And to see so much mistakes on this video is pitiful....
Basically yes, but in our club we trained also in shito ryu and other styles, our teachers were open to all kinds....But I trained many years on the makiwara, and I do it still, and I know that in general, shotokan guys don't like this kind of training.....For me it's very necessary...
@@gerardpoisson2042 I used to think the same way, coming from Shotokan. From a Shotokan and Shito ryu perspective the video is ugly for sure, but if you were familiar with Okinawan chinkuchi and gamaku principles you could recognize them in Hotsuka's technique and it would start to make sense.
vwr78 No, about Wado-Ryu. That said, sportification has reached all styles. Not only Shotokan. It has become very very difficult to get the real thing nowadays, because japanese instructors hide the true meaning of Kata -.-
+sassuki shotokan is the worst of all karate styles because its based only on and for sport karate...look all the pair work tha shotokan has, what a joke... and then compare with the Jujitsu elements that Wado Ryu has (the throws, locks, roundhouse punches etc)...Wado is the best style of karate and the style with the biggest syllabus of all karate styles..
+vwr78 All Karate styles have Jujutsu elements, since all of them have Kata. The problem with the JKA is, they don't teach the secret Kata applications to everybody, so it looks like we don't have them, but we actually do. Things you get only taught in behind closed doors 18+ seminars.
+sassuki No the Jujitsu has nothing to do with kata.the kata (and karate)are from chuan fa (kung fu)chinese origin.. the only style that has jujitsu (that is japanese style)is Wado Ryu because is karate (okinawa karate)with Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu that Hironori Ohtsuka was master before train in karate.Thats why Wado Ryu is the style with the biggest syllabus..because is two styles in one...for example attacks and defenses from seiza (idori),against knifes (tanto dori)against katana (tachi dori) etc..shotokan syllabus is only kihon, kata and ippon/gohon kumite and nothing more...5% of wado ryu syllabus...

thanks for your explanation, but I think that working on the makiwara uses the same principles of physics, whatever the school, no?
@@gerardpoisson2042 Actually no. :-)
Probably the worst karate style ever. Very bad form..
