How Airplanes Fly Those Giant Banner Ads - It's More Dangerous Than You Think

- If you've ever spent time on a US beach during the summer, you've probably noticed a parade of airplanes towing giant banners advertising companies like Dunkin' Donuts or Geico. We spent a couple of days with the men and women who get these banners flying, and it's no easy task.
You might think the airplanes simply take off with the banners attached. Alas, that is incorrect. It takes a challenging and risky maneuver to attach the banner to the airplane before it flies. We spent a couple of days with Banner Tow USA, a company that operates out of the Westerly State Airport in Rhode Island to find out what goes into flying these giant billboards in the sky.

"Expletive! I can't believe I missed it!"
I worked at a banner towing company and once the bottom pole (which is a weighted carbon pipe with cement or metal and weighs 20 pounds) had fallen 1000+ ft and went about 6 ft through 2 ft of cement. And then the company 2 weeks after I quit had a plane in disrepair, the fuel gauges did not work nor did the tac. The pilot (whom was late teens) had ran out of fuel and crash landed killing a woman. That company is still running to this day
Whatever what do you mean? I was saying what happened at the company I worked for. It isn't a safe job and I didn't sugar coat it
+Reid Russell sad to hear. Some jobs are just more dangerous than others. Didnt thought that it was that dangerous.
Whatever there's nothing wrong with him? What's wrong with your reading comprehension?
Reid Russell To many cowboys
Logan .xyz. 17. There is a minimum age for aircraft with an engine. Before you spirt wrong facts please check your own. The age is 17.
How do they land safely? Do they release the rope and let the banner float to the ground?
X15 Gaming Yes they do, landing with it could cause it to tangle in the wheels causing a crash
X15 Gaming What a dumbarse question
Crazy Clown, I was just asking how they went about landing the plane with the advertisement banner. William Hinson answered my question nicely.
X15 Gaming don't mind this guy he's just on his nightly spree of answering comments like a dick because he has nothing better to do
D Cal True. I seen him on other comments calling them dumb. I reported all of them.
People leave from city for a while to go to a beach and relax. Free from ads. Then someone flies a loud plane with a giant ad right above your face
I thought the same thing
Nobody leaves a city to be adfree.
And planes are not loud if they fly hundreds of feet above you.
I think most people don't mind a small plane buzzing about every now and then.
Eltic tf it was a joke
no escape
Do they have an ad blocker for this?
FatRichCat yea it’s called an RPG
Flak cannons
may be you should keep your head down
Not sure I've ever looked at a billboard and said, "oh! there's the lawyer I'm looking for"
but some people have
I've never not looked up at a banner being towed by a plane.
If I see your name on a banner ad, I probably will remember never to call you.
Feel like there is an easier way to do this
Comply Gaming Probably
Comply Gaming picking it up too, looks dramatic as shit
Comply Gaming There is... Pity these cowboys don't take it up, there still living in the 90s
Cool thou
Couldn't they just put a rope on the back and tie it? It wouldn't be that hard.
I saw a Subway and an Amazon ad for Prime day :P
Qui Le hmmm
Advertisements, just what I'm missing from my relaxing day at the beach...
I always loved Business and Tech Insider's videos. Very intuitive.
I always assumed they took off with them in tow
The airport down the road from my brother does something like this. I remember being down there one time and seeing a small plane take a steep nose dive and pulling up before seeing it gain altitude again with a banner behind it. I remember it being kind of fascinating once we realized what it had done. This just explains it in more detail with some cool camera perspectives.
Great information on how this is done. I have seen planes tow banners at many ballparks because I am a baseball fan and aviation buff and always wondered how pilots set up and prepare how banners are towed from aircraft. Thanks
Didn't realize how expletively tricky amazing and interesting this work is. I'm working on an animation featuring a banner tow plane and curiosity drew me to find out.
Yesterday i saw one of those planes for the first time and years and thought, "I wonder how they take off and land with those." Today this pops up on my recommended. So eerie.
How interesting. I'd wondered how the pickup was done. The plane in the video reminds me of the crop dusters I see from time to time.
Back in the day my brother flew a small plane that had lights under the wings that would produce words / pictures / advertising (only for night flight of course. He did a fly over at my sisters home during her birthday - oh so many years ago! Thanks for the posting.
Great explanation! thanks!
It’s easy to just pick a banner up and fly it in the sky and fly places like Sea Isle City, Ocean City, Atlantic City, and at the woodbine airport.
I'm from Westerly!!!!!!! This literally just made my day
Very insightful video of a place that takes up people to help them
Woah that's a quite low attitude.
Adriatical *Woah, that's quite a low altitude.
woah
Adriatical .
woah i'm offended
Adriatical were you referring to me
I love nothing more than enjoying a nice relaxing day at the beach, sun bathing and swimming only to be greeted by a MASSIVE. FUCKING. ADVERT. IN. THE. FUCKING. SKY.
Correction: "expletive" advert in the expletive sky
I haven't seen one of those in years!
"you might have a flat tire one day, or a banner flip over, its a lot of fun..." not exactly what i would call fun but life threatening hahaha
That beginning part was already cool. I thought it was attached first, on the ground, and then the plane takes off
A friend of mine used to fly an AG-CAT towing a huge text banner... one day on the pickup the banner broke in half, it was pretty fun to see the messed up message.
Flying out of Westerly is actually pretty fun. We go ther to block island sometimes, and others we just fly around.
*That was satisfying to watch*
The banner pilot was so polite that he censored himself. "You're like... 'EXPLETIVE! I have to go back around!' "
Is that a Norwegian Elkhound dog at 2:35??
Looks just like my dog!
BTW, very cool video.
I have always wondered!
That's crazy. I would have never thought that's how they do it
they should just do a whole bunch of drones do this and just have it positioned steady in a beach
eign You are a fuckwit
Crazy Clown good feedback
Kevin Fernandez Drones are actually pretty good at self-correcting in wind nowadays but you're right regarding the other points.
DONT GIVE THEM IDEAS
Kevin Fernandez and you say planes are not expensive?
damn, i already wanted to go to ground school but this really motivates me!
Watched the operation of a banner towing company and found out it's one of the most dangerous jobs anyone can do. Very short life expectancy.
vary cool video
I see these very guys all the time (I work at a beach in CT), the Geico add is a common sight.
I saw a plane like that today advertising the minions move lol
So, how do they disconnect the banner before landing? Or do they?
This seems like a really fun job
I live in Rhode Island and see the Geico ad all the time
I just saw the 1st 7 sec & now i know how, no need ro watch the rest lol
Living in Rhode Island, you will even see these ads from home. Sometimes it's a smoke message and sometimes it is the banner
Irony is that more people watched the ads in this video then beach goers.
Ayyyy rhode island !!! represent
"You can't miss the billboard that flies by"
"creates top of the mind awareness"
"people want to get away from the big cities"
"we go to where the people are"
We wouldn't want you to escape advertising or anything.....
Aye I live in westerly rhode island! and i see those damn things almost everyday.
Syler conklin same
SC Vlogs Dels, hot Weiners , and cawfee milk
SC Vlogs lived in north prov used to see em once in a great while in newport
I watched as a tow hook bounced off the ground, caught the lead rope as the pilot pulled up. The tow hook cable wrapped around the rudder horn, when the line went taunt it kicked the rudder hard over. immediate stall/spin into the ground from about 400'
Good old days
I'd pay to tag along on one of those flights, just to sight see and go for a ride in the sky.
Expletive this!
Lol i'm in Ct, and i see the Geico one every time i go to the beach
What company/manufacture is the plane that was shown flying? And what model?
Here in Nigeria this method is used for campaigns, my younger brother has never missed the rope but twice the banner was upside down.🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬
that looks like a really dangerous climb out.
cool ive seen the rest raunt kinds and geko banners and this satuderday while we all took turn mowin the lawn with new lighter elextric battery oprated morwer i saw airplane with banner go by red banner with white writing on opside side of banner plus it had txt and phone number in white also but the letters read keep america great
2:29 Mans said "expletive". lel, I'm dead.
Kinda reminds me of the arresting cables on an aircraft carrier
Would have been nice to include some pricing information on the services offered....no wait, that might be some type of 'business-related' video.
Business Insider: bringing you items with as little economic value as possible
Thumbnail looks like the plane is flying past a mountain upside down.
It's bad enough to see crooked lawyers advertising on TV but it would ruin my day to see them drumming up a "screw job" at the beach.
That was interesting but what i really wanted to know was how they land with it?
The state of journalism today is reflected well in the title of this video.
Hi my name is Crazy Clown and I'm clearly the smartest guy here
SunMoon well I just pooped, so good for you
This is very dangerous, In Portugal, two people died from one of these crashing on a busy beach!
All this work is worth it...WENGER OUT!
Why not fold the banner up in the plane and then throw it out ?
Mr. President #trump2020 #keepamericagreat Cuz it doesnt fit in the plane, you would need to adapt your plane so not only the banner fits in, but it also deploys correctly... its much cheaper with a tow hook like this
Mr. President #trump2020 #keepamericagreat they are giant!
BulletSh0t Gaming I don't understand what you mean.
Lol.
They are giant, that's what they mean.
You and I are weirdos he means they're really big, and heavy, and just in general A hassle.
That was cool. How about the smoke messages
This is the most extra way to do extra
Who knew Gavin was moonlighting as a tow plane pilot
in the jersey shore area, people bring their own planes, they use durable vinyl banners (they only advertise local businesses!) that they take off with, and they're paid quite well, so i guess this only really applies to the RI area?
See these in Huntington Beach California every summer.
Cool
I used to tow banners; the ones that Navy pilots would practice shooting their 50 cal guns!
I always wondered how much drag these present. Always sounds like the engine has a good load on it.
realvanman a lot. Normal cruise speed on the super cub for me was about 80-90 knots but with the banner was 35-40 knots.
Ever since I was a little kid and sorry I’ve been obsessed and wondering how they flew
That's nice. How do they land?
This seems unnecessarily complicated. If i had to guess how its done, I would have thought the ads were like rolled up and connected to the bottom or back of the plane, then after takeoff the pilot just pulls some sort of cable and hook mechanism to release the ad
How did the banner stay vertical for people to see?
It seems the banner could twist upside down or horizontal.
0:40 Aerodynamics. Look at the white tube-like edge of the banner, it will lifts the banner vertically during the flight.
Sometime depending on the wind it will twist. This is my father the owner!!
now i know wheres wenger out banner came from
Why not just take off with it already attached?
My council does this on new years for the city and it says happy new year every year they do it
Wenger Out guys risked their lives...
If i was rich i would buy a plane and fly a banner behind me wich says: "where is your plane peasants?"
"Explicitive, I missed it" wow
Banner planes are a big business here in Ocean City Maryland. Three pilots have lost their lives over the years.
I always wanted to make a para-sail hybrid that attaches to the back of cars and has a banner above the cars itd be awesome and not road legal
why not attatch a custom tail to the plain that could fit the banner inside it or make a larger hull so that it can fit the banner inside then release through a hatch in the back when fast
That pilot is so cool
They never explained why its more dangerous than you think
How annoying to go relax at the beach and some Pop up lawyer ad flies over!!
I've always wondered how this works.
expletive i cant believe i missed it
Anything that needs an ad isn't good enough.
Well, the first 10 seconds already answer the question. It's a bit like military planes stop on carriers.
Landing must be a pain
I'm curious as to how much it cost for the banner to be flown from the aircraft?
If that airplane tows that banner dangerously in the wind, the banner would rip easily and the banner would fly upside down
Dream job
