The latest 66 per cent electricity price increase announced on February 16, 2023, has pushed Sri Lankan bakery owners to the edge. Sanjula Peiris, the owner of a small family-owned bakery chain in the country’s capital Colombo, had to lay off staff and shrink their scales to lower operating costs. Analysts said the surge in power prices is likely to trigger further inflation in the crisis-stricken nation.

This is unfortunate with the high prices of goods and electricity. It is worsened with the low demand of the baked goods due to affordability. We all hope for an economic recovery as this is not sustainable for the people of Sri Lanka.

Perhaps they might have to think of alternatives such as solar power, It will be expensive at the start but in the long run it might be better than what they are going through now.

This is unfortunate in so many ways. It's hard to make a living these days, with the pandemic still on the rise. May they be able to still provide for themselves somehow, with all the help they could potentially receive.

What pandemic?
Every country makes their own electricity, yet uniformly no resident in any country can afford electricity and food, this is happening in Canada as well.
The low income households are always the worst hit in any crisis. Country is a lost cause at this point.
We need China's creditor assurance and support to get the funding from the IMF so we can improve the plight of our people.
China will extract its pound of flesh. You will become a vassal.

@@iii___iii No use commenting if you don't have a viable solution. The only solution I see is the IMF bailout. And to get that bailout we need debt restructuring assurances from China.

@@emmapeel8163 We don't have any better alternatives. What we have in place now is better than what we had before in my opinion, but the issue is we need a national mandate from the people, which there isn't right now.
