The point at the end of the video, where i talk about Chaos Order having a different ethos to modern games is important. This game wants you to fight from turn 1 and rewards that approach to play. It also has a huge skill ceiling and mastering the factions and their interactions will take time. As most games these days seem designed for 2-3 plays so they can get positive first impressions before people move on to the next game, Chaos Order is a throw back to when you needed to work at improving at a game. It rewards repeated play and developing a local meta. And is yet another game that shows just how dated and cumbersome TI IV has become.
Chaos order is old school mentality with new school mechanics, and its a shame that most reviewers out there didnt put the time in to take a good look at it.

Sounds fun, pity the visual feel doesn't work for me 😕 Still, if I see it on a special... What you said about 2-3 plays for is definitely apt, modern game design definitely has some issues.

This game is the "Hidden gem of 2022" for multiple people in our group. It provides tremendous value too, being on sale for ~40$ while providing excellent component. Nice to see it receives the recognition it deserves!

I agree completely. I've gotten this to the table once and we had a great time with it and definitely see it as a game you have to commit to, like DUNE. We don't have a lot of people in the group like that. They like their heavy euros with their artificial complexity and dopamine hits.

Ah. Very important point. The sort of game where the box _should_ show signs of wear!

As a reviewer who did put the time in for this one, I agreed with every single point in your video. I still can't believe more people skipped this game last year. And I'm sure you noticed this in your plays, but the game feels exceptionally balanced...each of my five plays ended with a faction winning one action before another would have taken the victory. The combat cards are so good and the powers are so interesting!!

I’m continually impressed how you can cram something this complex into 3 minutes.

I am very interested in both this and First Light, they seem to be overlooked by most people. Thank you for the video.

First Light is one of my favorite dice worker placement game. Very very good, great solo mode, great simple yet powerful variable powers. Highly recommended.

I thought it was Fantastic the one play I got. I really want to check out the other factions and a higher play count (we did 3 player). That said I’m a big wargamer and so this has some of that feel wit troops in it but I enjoyed the euro-esque. Action selection mechanic also. The combat wheel is a nice touch and really brings that Dune feel. But you are right it can be a brutal game! Timing your actions is big too on turn order for each action.

On paper, this should be for me: conflict-focused, large yet managable scale, allows for storytelling and player interaction, wrap-up bound to have players talking about how the game went and where things could have been done differently. I'm still looking for something that feels like a grand strategy-wargame-4x blend of epic sagas, depth, player interaction and emergent gameplay, something streamlined yet with meaningful mechanics and flavor alike. Interestingly this is shorter than Axis & Allies and especially TI yet still long enoug to be "epic", which I really like - but IMO it seems a bit too abstract and game-y.
The art direction is a huge miss - I respect all the details and quality from a visual design and art standpoint, but I just don't like it.
I do already have ROOT in the meantime while I continue my search for an "ideal" game. Maybe Arcs? It's apparently a tad less complex than ROOT. I'm curious about Bloodstones and Last Light, too.

    Looks like a Catan board

And Catan's board looks like Gammarauders, right down to the 2d6 numbers in the middle of each hex.

Nicely pulled mechanics from several good games, but why did they release it in such an ugly setting. :/

Yeah, im not the biggest fan of the art direction on this one either. But the game underneath is worth it. As i flippantly say at the end, id love to see it reskinned.
