    Reiner's version of 1959 was always the best, but this Karajan recording is equally magnificent which I would proudly have in my library! The brass section in this Karajan version are sonorous and very expansive - love it!

    The video is quite perfect to describe this music...
    _It is dawn and it is covered in mist, under the glare of the sun that has just risen a nightingale sings joyfully ... but a rumor tinged with thunder emerges from the distance, it is the legion that approaches Rome after a thousand battles marching on the majestic Appian Way, the ground will end up shaking under the footsteps of the soldiers_

    I concur with many others on here that this is the greatest studio recording ever made of this piece. However, believe it or not, there is an even superior version with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic, performing live in Japan in the 1980's. The clip can be found on youtube. It is not quite as clean as the studio performance, but it is actually MORE grand, powerful, and beautiful than this.

    This indeed is an outstanding rendition of this rousing tone poem. With the visual aids I can just imagine the Roman legionnaires marching on this ancient road. It certainly warms the cockles of my heart. There is nothing like warm cockles after hearing this wonderful, wonderful piece.

    Very nice .. but so very fast. ~115 BPM whereas the Romans marched at 100 BPM. So the entire 'menace' of the piece is lost, as though light infantry were trotting along the Appian way.

    • @ClaudioBDuran
      @ClaudioBDuran 3 роки тому

      The BPM on the record are 62 not 115 as you wrote, so this is a perfect heavy legionary march rythm not a light infantry trotting as you said.
      What an unfortunately & unexactly comment!!
