This is one of the tightest, most brilliant performances I've heard of this exciting piece- bravo to the wonderful Sinfonica de Galicia!
Yes!!! BRAVO!!!!
Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra iz still top notch by any standard
agreed
I agree!
Yes very good but check out the Montreal symphony's performance
ua-cam.com/video/5Eea2cXkd6c/v-deo.html
Very amazing every note perfectly played balanced and sonically powerful and extremely delicate in soft sections Pipe Organ pedal tones etc

I have been a lover of classical music all of my life and cannot fathom how, until now, I have missed this incredible piece of music! It's stunning and the last three minutes are so emotionally charged it brings me to joyous tears. This is a fantastic orchestra. Europe is so lucky to have such wonderful bands.
Many of us came to know it from Disney's Fantasia 2000 in an abridged version by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra 20 years ago that includes the full Apian Way climax. I've listed to so many versions trying to get the very best one. I have to say that the final section in Disney's version is the tightest and best recorded version I've heard, possibly helped by being in 5.1 sound but because the work as a whole was cut down I wanted a fuller version and have listed to SO many. I've heard some versions where the ending is plodding and others where it's a mess. The version on this video is really damn good, one of the very best, with great clarity and control. Superb.
Me too. Every time after all this time. I bought the trilogy album around high school in the 60s and it's still growing on me.
I especially love the final part - can you imagine the approach of a Roman army coming over the hill, getting closer... and closer... can you smell the dust from the horses' hooves as they proudly march past? It's awesome!
@@capefox8321 I have walked the Apian Way with Julius Cesar's Gallic Wars. He walked with the Praetorian Guard during his victorious entrance until reaching the Forum. Amazing, indeed.
Make sure you listen to the other 3 in the trilogy too. Fountains and Festivals. Both this and Festivals are a great boon to the gigging Trumpet player as they expand the trumpet section from the usual 4 up to 7 or 8.
-You can't tell the story of Ancient Rome in a song.
-Hold me the pilum
This is the best recording I've found of this piece. It's absolutely magnificent. I listen to it almost every night. If I keep it up, I may seek the help of a professional... I can't help it. It's just fabulous.
II. Pini presso una catacomba - 2:52
III. Pini del Gianicolo - 10:08
IV. Pini della via Appia - 17:35
thanks sm much needed for an assignment
GORGEOUS! Perhaps the BEST performance of this piece I've every heard. So very bright, somber, melodious and triumphant!
Absolutely stunning. It's my 3rd time listening to it today. 20:39 is just spine-tingling. Heroic exuberance.
Ottorino Respighi was a friend of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Respighi lived in Saint Petersburg, Russia, for three years where he was first viola in the orchestra of the Russian Imperial Theater in Saint Petersburg. When Respighi told Rachmaninoff that he would like to orchestrate some of Rachmaninoff's Etudes-Tableaux, the composer not only approved of the idea, but provided Respighi with tematic material. Ottorino Respighi was a master of orchestration.
Hes italian not russian
@@mmarci23??? An Italian who lived in Russia for three years.. Made friends with Rachmaninoff. I thought that was clear.
Studied with Rimsky Korsakoff
I came to know this orchestra through hearing about principal trumpet player John Aigi Hurn. This orchestra has an energy that many of the great orchestras of the world lack. The recording sound quality is second to none. I am absolutely amazed by the richness of sound that this orchestra can produce. Aigi is one of the finest principal trumpeters I have ever heard and it is heartbreaking to know he is no longer with us....thank you for leaving us with such fine recordings of his amazing talent.
Absolutely stunningly breathtaking performance of this incredible example of orchestration. Slobodeniouk's passion is channeling Ottorino Respighi.... I had tears flowing watching and listening to this masterpiece of orchestration...
Those Horns are killing those parts! Bravo!
Respighi’s masterpiece is so sweeping and emotionally charged. The final five minutes stirs something deep-seated in the soul of the listener. If you’re not moved by this magnificent performance, check your pulse because you might be dead!
Amen
I agree ... musical magic ... beyond description.
I completely agree with you.
Easy to visualize in your mind the marching of Legions, upon returning to Rome after battle, marching on one of the world's oldest roads, the Appian Way. Distant at first, slowing approaching and reaching the center of the Roman Empire, Rome in all it's ancient glory. Having played an excellent transcription of this in college at various venues, I still get a thrill upon hearing it yet once again.
Amazing recording! I’m playing this in orchestra and I hope that we’ll sound like this. I used this recording to help me practice the solo in the 3rd mvmnt and the concertmaster does an incredible job. His movements are so beautiful, I love watching him play.
I get chills every time I listen to the last movement. In my 8th grade band we played that and it’s still to this day one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever performed
this is one heck of a fine orchestra and every time i hear one of their performances i'm reminded by the excitement that the Chicago symphony used to produce during the 60's-80's. Bravo to the outstanding and fearless brass along with the wonderful woodwind soloists.Thank you Amigos!!
I must admit: I'm a huge fan of the Berlin Philharmonic... But I started to enjoy your concert videos. They are truly excellent!! Bravi! Maestro Slobodeniouk and the orchestra make a very special match. Congratulations on that frutile collaboration. I hope he is gonna stay some more years. Many greetings from Germany!
Thanks to the musicians for a fine performance and to the editors for retaining the ovation at the end!
This actually gave me chills and brought me to tears. This is a powerful recording.
Same here!
That Bb major scale near the end gives me eargasms all the time.
Best performance on YT.
Me sucedió lo mismo
Marc Parella agreed
Absolute brilliance! The best performance I have ever heard of the Pines of Rome. That ending was unlike any other!
great performance. Nice to see an orchestra having so much fun.
This entire UA-cam channel is a gift. Thank you for sharing this.
Outstanding. I consider Slobodeniouk one of the finest young conductors. Efficient...nothing fancy. The ensemble knows exactly what he wants and they deliver...in spades.
Without words...never heard Respighi so good interpreted, Sinfonica de Galicia is an Excellent Orchestra!
Once again, Maestro Slobodeniouk and The Sinfónica de Galicia perform a magnificent work flawlessly. BRAVO! Maestro Slobodeniouk BRAVO! Sinfónica de Galicia!!!!! I stood up, applauded here in my home, and shouted BRAVO at the performance's finale.
Outstanding performance with an exceptional finale.
*WOW.* I've HEARD Pines of Rome, but THIS is by FAR the most AMAZING performance of the piece I've EVER heard done, *PERIOD.*
I second the motion!!!! Bravo!
The best performance I've heard of this, equal to Stokowski's. Thrilling! Maestro Dima is in total command, and the orchestra is fabulous!
If listening to Respighi doesn't make you feel like this could happily be the last thing you do on this Earth, you haven't come to appreciate him yet!
What can you say, a thrilling and superbly musical performance. I've never heard this piece played with so much precision and passion. The hairs were standing up on the back of my neck and I had a tear in my eye at the end. Bravo all!
A powerful, gripping performance on a par with the great old-timers in this repertory. Magnificent audio and visuals - but then we've come to expect that from these Galicians.
+Ates Orga WE SURE HAVE!
Oh wow, the happiness in the Concertmaster's face at the end... and with very good reason!
Wow! Magnificent!!! This is a real conductor and a superb orchestra!
Nothing short of outstanding! And nice to see so many young faces in an orchestra of this caliber.
The one baby-faced percussionist looks to be around 16. Something he'll never forget. That was thrilling.
Everything about this orchestra, conductor, recording and performance of this marvellous orchestral work is utterly stunning. I thought Toscanini was unsurpassable.
Excellent performance! Bravo Maestro, Bravo Sinfonica de Galicia!! La Coruña should be proud having such jewel. 368.393 calls- its amazing number indeed, but I wish another 368.393 !!!
I haven't listened to this work for years. It was terrific to do so.
Fantástica, la Sinfónica de Galicia.( Como siempre) 👏🎼👏
What a marvelous performance. Everything you would expect from a fine orchestra and morel. Also, great audio and camera work. This is definitely going to be one of my go-to videos when ever I am feeling down and need reassurance the world is going to be OK.
I've heard this piece a zillion times, but this is probably the best.
warren wilson for me it's the best
warren wilson eh the horns miss way too many notes in the first movement. New York or Berlin philharmonic do it better
No but the trumpets don't miss any notes
Such a thrilling conductor! Terrific performance!
Every time I hear this astonishing piece, it takes my breath away, especially the finale. This rendition is especially wonderful because the video keeps up with each piece as it is played, this is rare, and it adds so much more to the enjoyment. Well done to the Sinfonica de Gallicia. Bravo and Brava to all
Absolutely marvelous. A riveting performance.
Once again, Slobo and this great orchestra nailed it!
I would have been on my feet applauding these magnificent musicians and their conductor after their brilliant superb orchestration of my favorite Respighi Pines of Rome! I never thought I'd find any orchestra and conductor who performed this better than the Slovenian youth orchestra by Zevnikov - and now I have! Hvala puna! from US Coast Guard mom in California
Yes, I heard that one, too. I agree with you.
I am so thrilled with this master performance, what a great treat , the finale takes my breath away.
This beauty and comfort and heroic feelings is off the charts
Friends,
There is talent!!! Much talent in Spain!!! Bravo!!!
Fantastic rendition of a fantastic work and well worth the four minutes plus ovation. Well worth checking out some other wonderful performances from a really great orchestra.
GRACIAS:
BRAVO OSG
Great sounding orchestra and well phrased, great dynamics. Bravo maestro
Absolutely wonderful performance. Excellence!
GREAT COMPOSERS, OTTORINO RESPIGHI, GUSTAV HOLST, WAUGHN WILLIAMS, WHO WROTE THEIR MASTERPIECES WITHOUT THINKING THAT THEY WERE THE INICIATORS OF THE SOUND TRACKS OF THE XX AND XXI CENTURY, LIKE MIKLOS ROSZA, JOHN WILLIAMS, HORNER AND MANY MANY OTHERS . FABULOUS!............
You are very much right about that one except there are even more examples.
History189 yes of course
Incredible. BRAVO!
Superb ... thrilling, powerful, grand, emotionally captivating. Thank you SinfonicadeGalicia, a moving wonderful performance!
I wish he'd come to San Francisco and that there were more cd recordings of his work. This conductor is MARVELOUS!
The last four minutes of "Pines" may very well be the THIRD best final four minutes in a classical symphony. The first and second spot go to Shostakovich #7 and #11. But third place is still a very respectable spot!
The Appian Way tops my list of best pieces of classical music, thought I'll have to give those two a listen and report.
I've already listened Shostakovich # 7 on your advice. It was intense but I find more absorbing the Pini della Via Appia ending... maybe it's familiarity. I still have to look for # 11
What do you think of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture's ending? I think it's quite spectacular as well. I specially like this version from a Youth Orchestra, it seems to me it has a particular energy ua-cam.com/video/-PRrO0yNWAM/v-deo.html
Finale of Bruckner's 5 and 8 symphonies are also amazing :)
What about Strauss' Alpensinfonie? The 3 last parts (from Sonneruntergang to Nacht II) are the last things I want to hear before passing away.
Magnificent in every way!!!
Excellent performance!
Absolutely wonderful! This is a masterpiece and the performance is one of the best or maybe the best i've seen.
Great performance, great orchestra. Bravo!
This performance is unrivaled by any other performances
This splendor of words can not arrive
Especially
I deeply love The pines of Via Appia
The wonderfulness of The pines of Via Appia is off the charts
A majestic triumphal march of than Roman imperial army that annihilated Carthage from the ground
The Roman imperial army are gradually approaching us on the Via Appia
A brave and invincible Roman imperial army will pass in front of us .

Good Night until morning
My favourite Respighi's work!
This orchestra performs with authentic joy. Look at the expression on the concertmaster's face from 22:04 to 22:29. No more need be said. Maestro Slobodeniouk, whom I greatly admire, is going to be a major presence in the international classical music scene before long.
Outstanding!!! thankyou. Brilliant performance by conductor and orchestra.
Bravo to a beautiful performance. What bunch of European snobs in audience. Some couldn’t wait to leave, vacant seats? No standing ovation? I listened to this and leapt from my seat with gratitude . Bravo again.
The EU has suppressed emotion among European nations now. Moslems do not tolerate music thus the reticence of the audience.
Stunningly beautiful!!!
Truly magnificent - well done!
Absolutely wonderful...
Bien hecho. Además, conozco bastante Galicia y me gusta mucho!
this conductor is marvelous - heard him on many YT sites. I think he should get exposure in the US.
Amazing performance! Thank you for the beautiful camera work as well, it will help my students to learn about the instruments and see how musicians and conductors work together to bring music to life.
A superb execution of this wonderfully stirring piece of music. Nearly flawless, a marvelous production.
Que espetacular interpretação!
Just plain wonderful. Thanks, elmer kreisel
Very Powerful and passionate performance. Brava Galicians!
Extraordinaria interpretación, Bravoooo por toda Galicia.
fantastic playing and direction. had the good fortune to watch the maestro with the NYPhiharmonic this year
Such a youthful orchestra and they bring their youthful sensibilities to works that became calcified long ago for most of us. Great music lives.
Aaaaaahhhh!
😍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Me encanta me encanta!!!!😍
What an absolute joy to watch this conductor at his craft. No player in any doubt as to what he requires from them.
The conductor is exceptionally easy to follow. Kudos, sir.
I like this video. Reckon the pace is spot on!
