Why does no one write music like this anymore? Or if they are, why aren’t we hearing it? The music literally toys with my soul, I can genuinely feel my own emotions moving. I wanna smile, cry and laugh in disbelief all at the same time. Absolutely stunning.
For me, John Williams at his best - E.T. Orchestral Score - moves me like this.
@@KennettSymphony I was gonna say the same exact thing haha! The E.T. score (and especially finale) gave me the same chills and emotional powerhouse this piece did.
@@KennettSymphony I think the score from Schindler's List is better.
If you listen to movies score's you'll find the most beautiful and magical music. Some people list the music written by John Williams (a genius) but my favorite is Ennio Morriconi.....RIP! Listen to Marconi's "The Mission" (the best) or "Cinema Paradiso". Then there is always music by John Barry.
@@stanleyshelmire of course I have listened to both Ennio and John Williams, but nothing comes close to this. The harmonic mastery and ridiculous orchestration is beyond any film scores from today
Absolutely incredible. My father introduced me to "The Pines Of Rome" when I was in my mid teens many years ago. I'm 76 now and listening to this version so many years later still gives me the same deep emotional thrill it always has. Very soul stirring and majestic. God bless these young musicians and their conductor for this breath taking performance.
If you have ever played in any orchestra, you cannot have anything but complete admiration for the hard work accomplished by this orchestra and conductor. Totally impressive!
I hope you are still on fire.....
Plus there is no better feeling, not only playing an astounding piece like this well, but having such an appreciative audience witness it.
Agreed! As a Clarinetist, to be surrounded, enveloped within these sounds is akin to living momentarily on a different plane..a different realm of existence.
The Pines of Rome finale never fails to reduce me to tears...
I agree - it is awesome!!!
Legions triumphant!
One of the greatest pieces of music ever written.
Agreed.
@phil erup
I didn’t say it was THE greatest, I simply said ONE of the greatest.
@phil erup
Gladly accepted 🙂
Beh. Non esageriamo 😊😊
Nope Beethovens 6th symphony is a work of art
At 14:38 we hear the 1923 recording of a real nightingale in the pines. That is 94 generations of birds ago, close to immortality, as is this exquisite dream.
Thank you for the time; I needed to find that place for a class I'm teaching!
that is a very moving thought ,in my opinion! thank you for that😍
I went looking for this piece of music because it was one of my fathers favorites. To my amazement I find he made this comment and how prophetic it was, as Chris passed not long after making this comment, but his love of classical music lives another generation in his eldest son.
I will do a cover of this lovely piece on my channel in the future as a tribute. Thanks Dad…. and the poster of this beautiful video.
David Franks
@@switchedonbachunpluggedmpd2297You moved me to tears. Greetings from a director.
Listening to this music is the most emotionally exciting "natural high" I've ever experienced in my entire 77 year life! I consider it nothing less than a gift from God.
THE YOUNG LADY ON THE CLARINET, IS TRULY AMAZZZZZZZZZZZZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Incredible. I hope she's doing well.
What glorious music, what a glorious orchestra, what a glorious conductor and what a glorious audience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The last movement absolutely transports me 2000 years: I can see it. Roman legions in armor with pennants waving on pikes, returning from a foreign conquest. Elephants , tigers. slaves , prisoners, War booty of all descriptions marching in a tremendous dust cloud in the broiling sun on the Appian way to the cheers of citizenry lining the roadway.
This is a technical as well as musical masterpiece..
Today, July 9th, is Ottorino Respighi's birthday and I had to watch, for maybe the 100th time, this SUPER performance of The Pines of Rome! Hope everyone involved is doing well today! Best Wishes from a grateful listener in Washington,DC
Having conducted many youth orchestras in my career, this has to be the best I have ever heard. The conductor is also absolutely fantastic. No overstatement, no unnecessary gesture "for the audience". It all about music, efficiency and beauty. Incredibly moving and simply beautiful.
This must be the best youth orchestra in the world. These young musicians are just fantastic. Slovenia might be a small country, but it has achieved big things with this orchestra. This performance is exciting - it sends a tingle down my spine. Well done to the wonderful conductor and the highly talented musicians.
well yes this is an exceptional performance, national "youth orchestras" aren't youth, they are 18-25.
as good as any other youth orchestra I've heard is the New England Conservatory . Check them out.
@@francissadleir9805 I am 81, anybody less than 40 is youth to me...
Orquestra Juvenil de Caracas is one of the best
@@francissadleir9805 That’s youth to me. 😎
How do you define a musical masterpiece? Simple. When you hear it for the 500th time it still thrills and enthralls you like the first time.
I also love the conductor's enthusiasm
For me, this song is among the 10 most incredible.
Once again Nadja Drakslar proved her amazing mastery of the clarinet. I have never heard any clarinetist produce such a sweet sound, and don't let me get started on her control, it is a masterclass.
Nadja Plays as Beautifully as she is herself. I just discovered her 2 Symphony's ago. The Youth Orchestras are a WONDERFUL Thing.
The Pines of the Villa Borghese 0:00
Pines near a Catacomb 2:47
The Pines of the Janiculum 9:06
The Pines of the Appian Way 15:30
thank you 😊
Thank you very much.
I would play this in my 1970 car going thru the red woods on our way to beach. Every time we turned a corner this music blended to the greatest moment ever
This conductor is brilliant. He gives the ensemble exactly what they need... nothing more, nothing less. And he is able in part to pull a fantastic sound from the ensemble with such simplicity in pattern beating.
The Roman Legions marching through the Pines of Rome.....best performance I ever heard!
Heroin... Heroin... Fabulous... Magic... Divine... PERFECT...
The conductor's eyebrows at 20:20 and the concertmistress's smile at 20:31 ... sum this up pretty well. Spectacular performance!
It is impossible to watch and listen to this without being totally moved. I have seen this any number of times and it never gets old. I am usually crying at the end and I think I go through that final movement without breathing.
I'm glad I'm not the only one... but I do keep breathing!
You sound like me!
It's incredibly moving and powerful. The Via Appia gives me goosebumps every time, whether listening or performing.
Special... Spectacular... Best... Beauty... BEAUTIFUL... PERFECT...
Beyond my words but not my tears. Thank you everyone.
Clarinet lady is divine! This is now one of my favorite performances. THANK YOU for including the ovation. The ovation is really a part of this great work and should be listened to until the last clap. Congrats. 7 years later.
How can you not have a standing ovation after this piece? A very loud, sustained major chord, with full orchestra AND organ, will do it every time. Add a choir, and you'll get people jumping over their seats. Respighi knew what he was doing. Wonderful joie de vivre.
I hear most of the great orchestras here in NYC. This orchestra is second to none. Great job.
one of the longest standing o's i have ever heard, remarkable and well deserved
Wow, such young artists - wonderful!
You haven't lived until you've heard this piece in the manner performed here.
Simply superb.
The ovation always has me in tears. Magnificent!!!!!!!!!
Outstanding performance by these young folks!! The 133 who voted "dislike" are complete idiots! That run through was exceptionally clean. Well done!!
I got goose bumps and tears in my eyes when I heard this!
Me too!
Glad to know it's not just me.
I love that you can hear the Organ really clearly here
english horn starting at 16:28 and clarinet throughout...wow, just wow! Kudos to this fine orchestra!
Esecuzione eccezionale perché suonata da giovani bravissimi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just attended a symphony concert last night where they played this piece and it got me revved up because I am playing this next semester in orchestra!!
Same here!
Ever since we played "Pines of the Appian Way" a few years ago in our community concert band, I've absolutely loved this piece. I don't recall hearing all four up until now, but I swear, "Pines Near a Catacomb" is quickly edging its way toward the top as my favorite movement of the entire piece.
And what's more, these musicians are all so young-looking! This is some amazing talent.
I like near a catacomb too. I'm in high school and I want to play in an orchestra like this. (I'm a clarinet).
I wish music like this was appreciated more.
+Michael Pfahler It is. More than you know, by quiet and thoughtful folks.
@@michaelpfahler1022 I'm just listening to this for the first time and saw your comment. I do hope you were able to follow your dream and are playing with a brilliant orchestra such as this one. God bless.
Good 👍 Michael McClary
Question: How does one sustain a 20 minute goosebump? Answer: Listen to this performance!!
From Indiana USA. I am clapping as well. This is one of my most favourite pieces and you folks took it to the absolute top of the mountain and then some. Peace and good will to you.
The pines of Via Appia is a main theme music of the invincible and glorious Roman Empire‘s Military
I was driving home late at night in traffic and almost pulled over because I was so moved by this performance!! I heard nuances in your interpretation that I have never heard in over 40 plus years of listening to this amazing piece. Bravo!!
The trumpet solo in the second movement gets me every time.
seriously, respect to the clarinetis soloist.
This performance brought tears of JOY to my eyes!!!😭😭
Amazing composer and amazing country!
Yes, and I hope to visit one day. Wow. Grazie.
Magnificent !!! These are the best young musicians I've ever heard, and I'm a retired symphony musician.
I had the opportunity to play this as a teenager at music camp. It was, and always will be, one of my most cherished memories. It's my favorite piece of all time.
My son was 1st Trombone in a youth wind ensemble that toured Europe. At one of their concerts prior to the tour, they played Pines of Rome. Absolutely triumphant. After that incredibly loud and marvelous sustained chord at the end....in one movement, the conductor ended the piece with a big arc of his baton and never stopped the motion, walking from the podium to off stage. The standing ovation was THUNDROUS, sustained beyond 5 minutes. It was in a church with fantastic natural reverb. That performance cemented this piece as one of my absolute favorite top 5 of all time. The conductor also made use of brass placement around the room.
Grand performance of mighty evocative music.
Siete un patrimonio della musica europea! Viva!
What amazing creatures are orchestras. How fortunate we are to share in this wonder of cooperative human creation.
It is utterly joyful. An ideal tonic for a spell of depression.
Exactly! And that’s why I have become an addict. I am planning a trip to beautiful Slovenia to hear it live in a concert
Dreaming of going to Italy and other European countries someday. Father God....take me there after the pandemic is over..
That Appian Way is beautiful. Wow.
A very fine example of the Slovenian orchestral tradition, a performance full of style and spirit.
+Darrell Jones Yes, indeed. I heartily agree. But, I would widen it to an eastern European tradition.
+Marv Luse Slovenia was always part of a Central Europe. We were part of Austro-Hungarian Empire for a 1000 years. But I still hope, you like our music.
I feel better about the world, seeing these young professionals play in concert. With young people who can play like this, the earth has a future.
Thank you, Kirsten. You definitely have a good grip on reality!
They’re not professional. Most of them are in high school.
Ever since I heard this in the car a week ago, I've been playing it twice a day.
Former trumpet player - having had a chance to play this and many other wonderful pieces in concert - let me say - by far the best instruments are the double reed instruments - oboe, English horn, bassoon - absolutely love the sound.
wow! I'll bet Respighi would have loved hearing these young people performing his music so very well!
These were high school students? Amazingly talented! One of the best performances of this tone poem that I've heard. Great camera work, too!
For certain one of the finest productions of "Pines of Rome". I'm delighted to see such a youthful orchestra creating such a refined sound, usually heard by groups with older members. The credit must definitely go to the very talented director! And, of course, to the dedicated, desciplined Slovenian students committed to good music. I wish American high school students were, but I don't believe so.
One of my favourite pieces, and they performed it excellently.
I love this song! It's beautiful!
Today is the first time I ever heard this (in my long life) on radio and I am so glad I located it! Spectacular !!
This is a youth orchestra? Could have fooled me. Magnificent! Bravo!
In 1973 I was listening to rock and roll on the radio, Bachman Turner Overdrive, I remember it like yesterday. I was SO sick of the same ole same ole for the hundredth time. I started turning the radio dial, radios had actual dials then, turning the dial looking for something else. I stumbled on the local public radio station which then played mostly classical music. It was Respighi's Pines of Rome and I was smitten. I have been a classical music listener ever since, over 40 years. Never looked back. I still listen to pop once in a while just to keep informed on what the heathens are doing.
These young musicians are AMAZING! Such a thrilling performance from start to finish! Very, very professional and polished. I've never seen a live performance so did not know about the extra brass in the balcony- blew me away!
This simphonic poem is so very lovely, I can't be spiteful at anything at all, such beauty, such incredible sounds of nature...you just feel in Rome...enjoy!
Great fan of Ottorino Respighi. This is a magnificent performance. Thank you so much for sharing.
For me, the best clarinet solo ever written
Under the baton of Maestro Nesj Bečan all the instruments of the orchestral canvas acquiere a touch of magic and enchantment to make the orchestra vibrate and resound with a torrent of tonalities and colours unequalled in the musical world. Particularly in this score where the musical ideas of Ottorino Respighi seem to be imbued with an atmosphere of mystery, conjuration and wizardry. Players and conductor honor Respighi's score. Maestro Nesj Bečan you are an unqualled shaman, genius and brujo of the orchestral palette.
I cried.
The young man playing the English Horn was fabulous!
This piece of music is food for the imagination, it magically conjures up many scenes.
I don't know how many times I have listened to this piece but each and every time I'm thrilled by the mastery of this orchestra.
Great. Amazing. Emotional. Heartbreaking. I was crying during listening. I think I've seen young people that are already high professionally skilled and which have not lost their enthusiasm yet. Perfect sound, too.
A great performance! I have seen the band transcription of The Pines of the Appian Way myself. One day I heard the recording of The Pines of Rome by Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony, another unforgettable performance. That said, I hope these young people keep going.
I'll never get over the amazing talent of this young orchestra.
I can just see the mighty Roman Legions marching down the Via Appian Way on their way to campaigns of conquest. ROMA VICTOR!!!
Absolutely spectacular!
In 1987 I compiled a multimedia presentation for a High School sports banquet using multiple slide projectors and a dissolve unit with the last five minutes of this piece as the soundtrack. Each slide was selected for meticulously timed entry and exit according to the musical/visual impressions needed. Much like this audience, our audience could barely contain themselves at the conclusion. This music inspires the best in human imagination. We gained many great music lovers the night of the presentation. Bravo! Respighi!
Magnifique intreprétation de Respighi, mon compositeur préféré!💙💟❤☮☯🏳🌈!
9:04 and on is just sublime. So subtle. I feel like I'm floating.
A well deserved standing ovation. Wonderful performance.
No pine is as intriguing and captivating and inspirational and heroic as the pine of Via Appia
If you're not tearing up during the finale, I don't know what will. Bravo!
The last 5 mins. brought me to tears. Movingly heroic performance by young people of the ultimate heroic score. Kudos!!!
Spectacular performance ! I love the name of this piece "Pines of Rome with Standing Ovation." Yeah...if I were composing a piece of music I would include a standing ovation as well. I heard his other composition "Pines of Rome with half-hearted applause" It wasn't as good
Two live performances of Pines, two different orchestras, two different venues, and two VERY different audiences. Each got an "S.O." and so help me also shook the chandeliers.
That's a good one! :-)))
johcafra: If the venues had pipe organs they were probably shaking the floor too.
Ha ha ha! Nice one Jim.
That's one of the best replies I have ever read!
Absolutely thrilling and the standing O is what a conductor and orchestra live for.
Powerful performance exceeds all expectations
One can smell the pines through the conveyance of the notes.
Do you also imagine them with snow on them?
I think a video like this is way more transparent than the best stereo system, because you can see what instruments are playing and how the composer did the orchestration. There's lots of stuff I've just noticed that I never hear in recordings.
This splendor of words can not attach it,
Especially
the wonderfulness of the pine of Via Appia is an order of magnitude more awesome
The depths of myemotion is immeasurable
FromTokyo
The pine of Via Appia is unrivaled any other pines
Fantastic performances of this young orchestra
Every time I listen to this I love it more. The final movement is simply magnificent, and the playing is phenomenal. Well done, folks.
direttore attento e preciso, orchestra giovane e brillante. una performance veramente straordinaria. grazie per tutto cio.
sono d'accordo,perfettamente
I had no idea that these where High School students! They are absolutely fantastic! Such a moving piece. My son's university music department played this piece. He played the part of one of the trumpets while standing in the balcony. By the time they finished the finale I had tears streaking down my face. Such a powerful finish to a song. Bravo ! Bravo ! This orchestra gave an exceptional performance worthy of the standing ovation.
