Back in the late 70's worked at a industry's company. I worked on a track line. We made the track shoes for catapiller. Took something like 40 foot long bar steel, cut to size on ban saws. Threw them on a track, slid them down to the touch. Touch the notches in the lead end. Back on the track and to the drill press. Drilled 4 holes in each shoe. Then to the burr bench. To be deburred, and reimed. Then stack in bins. The shoes weigh anywhere between 70 lbs to 130+ lbs. We ran 900 to 1400 shoes per shift. 4 guys ran the track line with 2 9 hour shifts. I was chiseled back then.
Would enjoy seeing more of the rough work done, before final assembly. In particular the foundry work where the castings for the engine and heavy frames are cast
On my Industry playlist I have/had a video on CAT Dumptrucks that was good. The have to be shipped in pieces, then welded on site. In WW2 Pacific theatre bulldozers were cut in half, loaded into planes, then flown to remote sited and welded together.
It is far beyond our thinking, that made possible USA to manufacture marvellous Bulldozers to the new generation. The strength of the men and knowledge brought them to high standard quality products which makes the job more easier than in the past. Watching at the skills of the workers was very much interesting. Each and every one got their own talents to advancements in the field. If we could see not only the assembling but the each part how it was made that will bring much more exciting and interest. I wish them every success.
I was a temp at CAT in Montgomery IL during summer while I was off from law school. I worked in Building K bending hydraulic tubes a huge Ingersoll Rand tube bender. It was fun working there building the excavator and wheel loaders
I'd love to see the CAT302 CR Next Generation Mini Excavator being manufactured and constructed, as its my favourite model. Seeing the larger machines being put together was really great, they really do work hard day in, day out, for years, then overhauled and repeat.
What amazes me the most, other than the absolute beauty of these machines, is that there are enough people in the world that need one and can afford one of these machines, to keep them in business. It is like car lots. They are everywhere, and there are enough people that will need a new car at any given moment, AND they come to YOUR lot. Not one of the other twenty that line the street where YOUR lot is. Blows my mind.
Exactly as Dave N wrote here... Caterpillar was founded in 1925 so they produced so many machines during that time... thats probably the reason why they are everywhere... :)
all the dirt in the world is moved this way and many other machine types of course....the evolution of this stuff is amazing..even ponds dug by mules and horses were part of this evolution ...FRESNOS AND SLIPS....the more i see ingenuity the more i know about manufacturing( and i know ALOT) the dumber i feel about THE BIG PICTURE and the men who gave thier lives for this !..they enjoyed it im sure,,not to mention the deaths of the men who literally GAVE thier lives in accidents so going forward,we would be safer
I went on a factory tour of cat in Peoria Illinois in the late 90's it was awesome seen every thing from the foundry castings to the engine assembly to the finished product driving out of the factory it was an awesome experience to see
Most of the actual manufacturing is outsourced now. Cat Headquarters moved to Chicago several years back. the only foundry still operating is Mapleton Engine block & Head casting. East Peoria basically does some large frame machining, gear machining and is the assembly hub for large size Dozers. (D8 to D11)
Interesting question Ron... I could not find any information about building dozer at home (on the internet...) Let me know if you´ll find any informatino 😏
I spent my whole life creating building streets and parking lots with machines like these for big corporations with lots of money who didn’t give a shit about the people who made them, or the people who created the work spaces for them. Just hurry up and get it done already! I can tell you now as an old man who’s disabled and broken, and wished he had one more day to push one more pile of dirt and create another piece of art, because some day you will be wishing it too! Don’t take what’s in front of you for granted! Remember, tomorrow is promised to no one 💪
