If you follow David's instructions , or even modify them slightly if you like,. this will prove to be very good and sturdy rifle rest. I had great luck with making one for myself about 3 years ago, after following this video three or four times so it stayed in my memory !! I built mine from soft pine and the upright shaped rest parts I made from gluing two pieces of 1 inch thick pine together, this made for a rigid holder, I am still using this rest today. Thanks very much again David, for showing me how.
I agree with you absolutely.....I can only think that it must be the minority of people who are not happy if it takes more than a hammer and nails to build, and takes more than 5 minutes to complete.
You, sir, are a craftsman! Beautiful work! Excellent video, and very nice touches with the crackle finish paint and foam liners! Thanks for making this video!
My god that is well made Davy bloodly good job and as always love your videos and craic and keep her country and let the videos pile in cuz there a real pleasure to watch!!
David, I can tell that you aren't a novice when it comes to wood working, I remember seeing a Oneway wood lathe in one of your videos on your own channel. The rest you made looks very well made and quite useful, think I'll have to make me one now. Thanks for all the great info you have given all of us shooters/hunters, I sincerely appreciate it.
Mr. James I appreciate the precise yet casual way you tutor this project. You also managed to do so with no obnoxious foreground "music", for which I applaud you. I look forward to building and using the D-I-Y Rest. FL, USA.
That is one hell of a GREAT REST !!! The stores want so much that you almost can not justify buying one BUT NOW I can make one thanks to your video ! I like the paint job you did to your rest it looks like something that would be bought but better as we know it was HAND MADE ! Thanks for the great video and keep up the great job , Mike .
Not quite what there is to dislike about this video, looks like a lot of work went to making this video designed to help others. Anyhow, Thanks for the AWESOME and very DETAILED DIY Video! Happy/Safe Shooting!:)
Just come across this although it looks as it is years old. Anyhow just to say, a brilliant and informative vid on how to construct an adjustable rifle rest. Well done to the presenter, and also whoever was behind the camera work. Outstanding guys.
Well done. I'm going to copy your project for the most part but add the adjustable feet you suggested by replacing the rear door stop feet with "blind nuts' that fit a bolt on each side that could be screwed in/out to change the rear high bringing the barrel up/down as needed. Nicely done
Thanks for this James. I was looking for something simple and relatively inexpensive, and this seems like it'll fit the bill. BTW, I enjoy your YT channel very much, and I hope you continue to post new videos, not only of your hunts, but also of this variety. I enjoy making small projects, and usually all I need to get them done is a good kick start like these excellent vids. Cheers, my friend.
Right proper job mate, I've been thinking about making 1, but I think I'll make mine a bit bigger & put rails around the base to hold cleaning supplies, tools, etc. Thanks for sharing.
you dear sir are a real star, I am planning to make my own gun rest just for the fun and heck of it. a customized version and I was looking for ideas and came across your video. first of all, great work and great presentation . you have spent a good amount of time in planning the work and the video.. and finally I must say I am subscribed to you and will give this project a go.
Excellent job and great design,,,so good I stole it and made a couple for myself and a couple for friends. I changed the foam to leather on the upright stock rests, and added velcro straps to hold the rifle down more solidly. I appreciate the video,,,Oh,, I also use cabinet grade floor levelers instead of the way you showed. That's mainly because I had a bunch of them just hanging around from cabinet builds.
Very well done my friend. Really great video on the rest. Have started mine yesterday and already it looks good, even though I only have the wood so far. Congrats, Great job. Pay no attention to the thumbs down, they obviously haven't a clue what they are talking about, sorry, they did not even comment, need I say more. Cheers fro the Emerald Isle.
Here is a suggestion for you.Thread two holes on the front where you put the two rubber rest on the bottom. Then use some all thread rod to screw through for the front to sit on instead of the rubber rest and you could attach those rubber rest to those rods. Then use those rods to raise or lower the front by screwing them up or down.Your shooting rest is real good and would be a class A rest with those adjustment rods.
keep em coming! im from just down the road, made ur shooting sticks real good job.just made own camera scope mount let you know how it work. thanks for the inspiration.
Great vid, liked the fact that you gave dimensions in both inches and millimetres, I didn’t like your choice of paint finish after all that hard work and lovely finishing, id probably go for a stone flick colour but a great video and well made! Congratulations. 👍
Looks nice. I think I'll try making one for my AR-15. I'm going to have to make some kind of elevation adjustment though. Adjustable feet or modular parts of different lengths that you can just replace with screws might work.
One can make spacers for the rear support, of plastic lid / masonite in wide & length of support with holes. As the bottom plate is of two pieces. makes 2 large hole to the wing nut will fit in. so you have room for adjustments
You use your fingers as a brace against the side of the piece you are marking. You can also get accurate measurements without a ruler/tape measure with practice.
Hi I was just wondering if you record videos ov your self hunting with springer air rifles or multipumps.great videos by the way I'm always waiting for the next one to be uploaded.
Great job on the video itself and I really like the steady rest. I will be making one. My only complaint is the use of the metric sizes. I don't know any American that likes the metric system unless he is a young whippersnapper. Ha. Good job.
+steve elliot I don't know why any British person like the metric system! All you need to know about metric versus Imperial is the Nazi's, Italian fascists, and Japanese used metric calibre weapons in WWII, the allies Imperial calibre weapons. Imperial measurement, the measurement of the democratic free world!
You should have painted the countersink part and then filled with 2 part filler. If you use poly filler on mdf ,It will eventualy fall out. Also You would have been better telling to use with coach screws. Not threaded bar. Also there is a green water proof mdf expencive and heavier .But for these sizes. You could get off cuts from building sites. The mdf that you used was the better grade in the normal mdf A great job that you have done, very nice.Enjoyed watching.ps stop using hb pencils and buy yourself H2.
Interesting project. I was looking for such, to install new scopes, clean and smith this and that. However, I'd used 1" thick Lucian wood for base and 3/4" on the holding pegs. I was watching your drill and noticed the chuck wobble, shaft must be bent.
I made mine earlier today and its not adjustable. I just cut the U groove 2" deep making the Rest height 10" not counting the foam that I will attach here soon. If its to high I can cut 1" or so off the wooden table legs, lol... Or add wooden blocks easily enough. Glad I made my shooting table 2" taller than normal, this might prove to be adjustable after all, haha ...
Yes you could, As I did. However it's pretty cool to have custom built stuff if you ask me. I've bought two that cost a lot more than that but my carpenter skills fall far short of his.
What is the reason for using MDF again? I have LOT's of spare 2" x 12" and 2" x 4 " premium lumber left over after building a large 9' x 15' storage shed over the winter and wondering if I can build this same rest using it. How tall is the front rest from the table top surface exactly? Thanks
If you follow David's instructions , or even modify them slightly if you like,. this will prove to be very good and sturdy rifle rest.

nice, i just finished my rifle rest. but with 1 mdf layer of 18 mm it also works
Similar bolts are used on table legs.

Good stuff sir :)
Good idea MrSnapper1d I'll try that
Would suggest having only one foot at the front for more stability on different services. But good job.
