  • Many people think the Coralife Protein Skimmer isn't even worth the low price of admission. I'll have to disagree, as after a few tweaks to how I had the skimmer setup, I'm getting great results on a daily basis! Check out this video for some simple tips about how to place your protein skimmer to clear some nasties out of you tank!

    Thank you for the video, I actually like this skimmer. I had it installed and was not impressed at first. I took it off and noticed a big drop in my PH. Since re-installing my PH has been maintaining at a much higher level. I believe the increased oxygenation is worth it by itself. Thank you again and keep up the videos!

    Note to Apex prospective buyers. Most of the outlets on the EB8 power bar are TRIAC Switching Circuits that do not fare well with lower power devices. I have a Biocube 32 LED and this Coralife Protein Skimmer and I can not control the skimmer due to my powerheads occupying the only two relay-controlled switches. The relays are the only plugs suitable for lower draw devices. Wish I had known this before I dropped some coin on an Apex.

    Great video enjoyed the information. I have a question though how did you elevate the protein skimmer ? I have a Coralife Biocube 29 gallon that has three chambers and in the first chamber the skimmer is sitting too low in the water when attached to the wall between the first and second chamber.

    • @TheFishTankGuy
      @TheFishTankGuy  8 років тому +1

      +Cobalt Blue Well, I actually have my protein skimmer attached to the outer wall of the first chamber (the wall across from the divider of the first and second chambers). I have it pretty much pushed up as far as it'll go and then I do my adjustments of the air from there. Keeping the bubbles fairly low in the middle cup help the skimmer to only pull the grossest stuff, rather than pulling a bunch of wet skim.

    Hello! I found your video to be very informative. What brand and size of water heater do you have in your tank? Thank you.

      I was wondering the same thing... looks like an Eheim Jager, maybe a 50w considering the size of the tank.

    There was a guy on ebay about 10 years ago who was selling a filter tray that that had reusable filters, very durable material, And it was basically a drip tray that would not clog ever for a long time and if it did ever clog it had a built-in overflow which was also used as the handle to remove it with so you're wet dry bacteria filter media would never get too dry even if it clogged up and overflowed back into the tank it wouldn't go back into the tank it would go through the handle instead it was a very amazing product that would also work with this filter basket as the water director, he had them for 8, 14 and 29 gallon biocubes, think his name was biocubeguy, I wrote him a message about buying some more and he hasn't sold them in a while but he is about to start selling them again, he even had a thank you card in the packaging offering for you to upload your own personal video to UA-cam demonstrating the product and if you sent the link to him proving that he would mail you extra replacement pads

      Driftwood aquariums The Fish Tank Guy Do either of you have suggestions on how to keep the lid from popping off? Mine gets about like the one in the video, but a little less actual water, and more bubbles, and the bubbles end up pushing the lid off. Also, about how full of liquid/waste is considered full?

    I noticed that your InTank water director doesn't have a slot in the middle of it like mine. Was yours like that when you got it? I am having a problem with the slot pouring water behind the entire media basket itself. If you did modify it, what did you do to cover up the slot? Thanks!

    • @TheFishTankGuy
      @TheFishTankGuy  8 років тому +1

      +Aiden Tolomay Actually my inTank water director did not come with a slot in the middle of it. My basket included 2 different water directors, one was longer and one was shorter. I use the longer one since it dumps the water right in the middle of my filter floss. If they only sent you one director with a hole in it, I would contact their support team!

    Where did you get the little water tray thing that carries it from the first compartment to the second? Mine barely flows over and actually goes mostly thru the cracks between the glass

    • @TheFishTankGuy
      @TheFishTankGuy  6 років тому

      That actually is a part of the inTank media basket for the Biocube. It's pretty pricey, but it does greatly improve the flow and filtration of your system. Here's a link to the actual product: amzn.to/2HrF8Nx

    I am having problems with mine. I get good bubbles, but they stay bubbles, and then the whole thing is filled with bubbles/foam until the lid comes off. Anythoughts?
    And I agree, for $30, this does what it needs to do. Is it going to remove as much waste as a typical $100+ skimmer? No. Why would it?
    Also, thanks for the video!

    I have this in my 14 bio cube.i have it sitting as low as the tank will allow and I’m running the valve wide open and the bubbles still won’t make it to the rim. I’ve made sure the lines not pinched and it’s a new air stone that’s screwed in all the way very disappointed

    • @1luis4wero
      @1luis4wero 5 років тому

      Cut the line shorter so there's more air pressure through the line

      Mine did that at first but after few days went away and started pulling dark green yellow crap. If I fed or dose anything it goes nuts for a little while then it's back to bubbling. I'm dealing with bubbles pushing cap off at the moment

    Help please. I bought this skimmer for my 10 gallon and it just doesn't seem to be making enough bubbles to make it go high enough to skim anything.

    • @TheFishTankGuy
      @TheFishTankGuy  8 років тому

      +Adventures In Reefing Jeanne S How is it sitting in the water? It has to be submerged almost up to the collection cup. Also, are you using the wooden block that came with the skimmer?

    • @crazycountrygirl8086
      @crazycountrygirl8086 8 років тому

      +The Fish Tank Guy I have the cup sitting right at water level. Yes I am using the wooden block. I think the little thing that you turn to regulate the flow is broke or something because it seems to have something to do with that. I can't figure it out :(

    • @crazycountrygirl8086
      @crazycountrygirl8086 8 років тому +1

      +The Fish Tank Guy Can you show me how you have your tubing from the pump to the flow thing connected?

    • @TheFishTankGuy
      @TheFishTankGuy  8 років тому

      +Adventures In Reefing Jeanne S I would, but pulling it out of my setup would be a pain in the butt, haha. What you should have is your air block connected to your tubing, which will run a good length to your control valve (that determines how much/little air is being let through). That control valve will be connected with another piece of tubing to the airpump. Take the air block out of the skimmer and just put it in the water and see what you are getting. Turn the control valve knob and observe the air coming from the block, it should change significantly.

    • @crazycountrygirl8086
      @crazycountrygirl8086 8 років тому

      +The Fish Tank Guy that's just it nothing comes out unless I take the control valve completely off. My thumb hurts from messing with that valve trying to get it to work lol.

    Hi are you using an intank filter basket in chamber 2?

    • @TheFishTankGuy

      Yep! It works really well for adding media and also makes maintenance quite a bit easier. In the remaining open portion of the chamber I have a self made basket with some marine pure gems along with an algae Turf scrubber.
