I find it funny that the older generation thinks we all play video games…video games have been around for over 50 years and never have they distracted outdoorsy people from getting outside.
Fun stuff. Like involving the kids and listening to their comments! I'll use the corn to bring the deer to the oats. 9x the protein in oats gives it the edge for nutrition. Corn has the edge for attraction.
@thomaschandler4831 thank you for the kind words! I’m still a work in progress, but thankfully the boys show their dad some grace when I have my moments.
You did the test wrong. This should be a blind test. You can't tell them what's in the bait pile or they'll always go to the corn, you gotta switch the signs and see if they'll still eat from the "corn" pile.
great segment. fun watching you go over the footage with your boys. thanks for sharing. i put a little corn out for the "squirrels"....lol. thanks for sharing.
Awsome vedio . You should try that again with black eye pea or soybeans and corn . We did that last year I won't spoil what happened but it blew my mind. We actually used black eye pea soybeans and corn . The other thing they really like is cotton seed . We put hole cotton in chicken wire they go crazy for it .God bless you and your family God-bless America 🇺🇸
We got some cottonseed meal for a good price once and top dressed hay for our cows one winter. They bloomed and kept weight through the winter and had much better looking calves when fed the CSM. Will have to try some now for the deer feeder.
Corn seed and oat seed is one thing. Grow the two plants, side by side, and the oats will be much more attractive, when they are young. Also, the corn is pure carbohydrates...it isn't much better for deer than it is for people. Put an equal amount of chestnuts next to the corn and oats, if you want to see what deer REALLY like, and it's something good for them.
I will tell you a secret I found out by a worker in the feed mill making a mistake and giving me 500#’s of crack corn instead of whole corn. I had a ton of new and bigger bucks show up on our farm in Ky eating the crack corn. I put out whole corn the next time and had less bucks and pictures. Switched back to the crack and they came right back!!!! So now I feed them crack corn and it has made a huge difference
I feel like they went to coern more, probably because that's what they are used to eating on the property. If they were used to grain they may go harder towards that to begin with. Try putting a pile of soy beans in there as third option.
You need to cull out about 4 bucks. You do have one mature buck with a thick large body thats got all those other bucks in check.Did you happen to notice what moon phase you did this on?
I was shocked to see this many bucks. We normally don’t see that many. I didn’t notice the moon phase. But man that one was all puffed up and definitely had everything in submission mode.
Got a picture of one that’s has a horn coming out of it’s eyebrow same as the one in your video about the same length only got him one time wondering if you had seen one like this before or if you got more pictures of it. I’m 65 and started putting game cameras out when Moultrie came out with the one that had a 35 mm camera inside when I was about 28 years old and I have only seen this in one picture of mine an none on my friends. So I’m saying it’s not common was wondering where the horn would grow out in the years to come?
Idk about the oats themselves but deer prefer the oat plant where we live in TN better than anything else I've tried. Clover, wheat, greens, soybeans, winter peas and anything else I've tried. They'll absolutely eat them down to almost nothing if the acorn crop is low like this year. I used to put Clover in with the oats and still do because they will keep growing into summer and on for years if I sow the right ones. Fertilizer and lime are key with either one. I've never put out oats from a bag so I can't say about that. I have seen deer flock to oat hay stacks and fields in south Dakota.
It really depends on what they know and are used to. Deer where corn is not normally gown will have to learn how to get it out of the husk. They will typically eat what is normally available, but they will develop favorites.
Well done boys. It might be time dependent and even location dependent. I believe the oats are actually "better" food for the deer. If the deer are in need of a nutrient in oats then they will likely be drawn to it. I have seen deer eat acorns on the ground at the edge of a cut alfalfa field then graze/browse through the alfalfa to a cut corn field and eat for a bit then work over to a standing bean field eat for a bit and move on. But these deer of yours clearly preferred the corn at the time you observed them. How did you boys do this year? Did you get any of those nice buck.?
I think time dependent is a good observation. It’s interesting how deer won’t gorge themselves and leave food supply behind. Definitely not like our cattle.
WE don`t harvest corn up here in Saskatchewan, but I knew they would prefer corn over oats. I feed oats but only if I can`t get wheat. Maybe you could do a corn VS wheat test
I'm wondering how oats would do away from the corn pile. Where I live and hunt deer, corn = danger. No one uses oats. If I did this test, it would show that the deer willing to stand next to corn did not do so in order to eat oats, but what would be willing to approach oats in the daylight??
i use whole corn and that brings in the bucks with some plain corn without a cob, then 2 years ago we did some peanuts while we buy in bulk and was gone in few days
Are the deer in that area familiar with oats? I know up in Alberta if you throw corn out the deer tend to be wary of it because they're not familiar with it. On the other hand, they like alfalfa and oats up there because it's what they know and are familiar with.
No they aren’t familiar with oats around here. Only reason why they’d know corn is a few feeders. We only have wheat and cotton around our area in western Oklahoma.
I’m guessing it’s a smell thing. The corn is probably significantly sweeter smelling than the oats. I’d be curious to see these tests tried again with the piles placed in different locations and see if it makes a difference.
If you want bucks with big rack, you'll train them to eat soybeans ;) We have so many acorns, I've watched bucks walk past corn to eat white oak acorns.
New to your channel, what state was this shot in? Corn is king, put a cotton ball with pure vanilla extra on it. Then mix one pak vanilla pudding, 1 pak cherry jello, one container salt, skittles sour apple cool aid or Jolly Rancher sour Apple cool aid, and see who comes to with one first. You will be surprised. Call this the deer attractant test.
I doubt it. They seem to eat a little bit of everything to fulfill their diet needs and would continue to eat the pears. It’s amazing how the deer leave piles of food to scavenge for other food.
The best thing I have found is I mix corn, roasted soybeans, protein pellets and dried Molasses. It draws them in pretty quickly and they eat it like nothing else I have used.
Oats are supposed to be better (healthier) for the as the weather gets colder. Because the high carbohydrates and low fiber of the corn do not let the deer's digestive system adapt to the low nutrition of the natural vegetation.
Is it possible they didn't eat as much oats because they have never seen or ate it? I've always wondered what would happen if you put out acorns in an area where there had never been any before
On the property I hunt I’ve tried corn, fortified cotton seed and rice bran. I haven’t seen much of a difference in preference, the deer eat it all up! I buy whatever is available and cheapest!
I planted two food plots side by side. In the first, Buck Forage Oats. In the second, Five Way, which is a blend of wheat, oats, turnip, chicory & white clover. The clear winner was the Five Way.
I could see how people might see it that way. I guess it’s all about time and location. I always looked at it like fishing with a bare hook or putting bait on a hook. If you have all the time in the world you’ll eventually get on with a hook and probably faster if the water is loaded with fish. Same thing deer hunting. If you are in open country you might never have an animal within a mile of where you have property to hunt if there isn’t anything to bring them close by. I appreciate the folks though that take the extra effort to do it without baiting or modern electronics/game cameras I would say is even more impressive. If somebody doesn’t believe in baiting I would think they would feel the same way about a game camera.
I know a guy slowly (2-3 years) added more and more soybeans to his deer corn until he got them used to eating nothing but. His 500 acres joins his parents 2000 in south Alabama. His bucks look like Iowa or Wisconsin monsters!
The most fascinating thing about this video is the fact the kids are actuly very interested in this. Instead of staring at a video game.

@charleywalker2982 thank you! And we have some more planned.
Corn having a larger kernel will be more attractive. If planted oats were growing next to planted corn, I believe the oats would be preferred.
The oats seem to be easier to chew up, but I’m guessing the taste is that much of a difference.
Where I’m from plated oats don’t make it to seed
@@tomstone3645 because they are preferred.
They are after the fat content in the corn
@@Highstranger951 corn and oats have similar fat content. Oats have a higher protein content, but corn has more carbs and less fiber.

Deer won't eat something that's strange to their area until they get used to it

I have totally guessed they’d go to the oats….wrong!! Wow! What a great science project! Raccoons and mice were part of it too!
So far corn is king, but I’m about to put out some soy beans and see how that goes.
I’m guessing oats are easier to chew and digest for deer.
I would think so too, but I’m sure corn is way sweeter to them and only using oats for the nutritional value.
Needs further testing. GPS coordinates for this spot, please!!
Cool video. Try sweet potatoes vs ?
very cool and informative video thanks!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
Corn, corn corn. Corn to deer is like candy to a kid
Corn is king, around here anyways.
Great video. Would love to know how many days it took for the corn to be finished off.
It took several weeks to finish off the corn. The coons are the ones that demolish the pile. The deer just pick at it and move on.
Was wondering if you normally feed corn on the property or how often do you feed oats?
I myself have done some research... I found the salt block is 1st choice.
can you mix oats with the cracked corn and put in piles for them to eat?
So it's a win for the corn!
Seems like the trend where we are at anyways.
Awesome experiment fellas 🦌
back in the day in arizona, i used cotton seed ...
I know cattle will eat cotton seed.

Wheat is primarily what we have here in western Oklahoma. I’ve seen wheat pretty much get eaten by birds and coons, but corn seems to be the go to.
Temperature has a lot to do with it. When it's cold, they'll go for the corn before anything else. Apples seem to work better in milder temperatures.
Try rye! In central SK seems to work just fine and you can buy it from a farmer rather a bagged product from a hunting store.
Here is a tip, mix strawberry jello powder with any grain and see the results. Amazing, the aroma will bring the big ones out for sure.
Where was this filmed?
I did the same thing except it was corn and acorns.
5 gallon buckets full of each.
The acorns got eaten faster by a large margin.
@@JimParvin-o9e sometime we will try and find some white oaks and try it out.
