I know people that use the method you are showing and it works great. I prefer to keep mine in a plastic shoebox that nests inside another. I drilled holes in the top box that holds the fleas. This allows them to drain and I can rinse them easily by dipping water with the undrilled box and pouring it over them. We snap the lid on and keep it in our fish cooler overnight. Keep fishing those fleas and catching those citations!
I had grabbed a handful and shoved them in the pocket of my surf-fishing shorts while standing in the surf, forgot about them, put those shorts on 5 days later and they (the crabs) were good as new. The shorts not so much...
I couldn't find Sand Flees in shops in Georgia or Florida so I catch my own. Also, I have seen frozen Sand Flees at Walmart at times. Freezing is a good thing to do especially when you have so many.
Jeff Madre the ones I bought were red/orange like steamed crab or lobster so I'm assuming they were boiled before freezing. The body inside the shell turned nasty black and gooey after being on ice about a day.
There is a video somewhere on UA-cam on how to blanch sand fleas before freezing. Boil for just a few seconds and then dunk them in ice water, then freeze.
On Day Five Fishing my theory is proteins, fats, and sugar are digested and goes to the bloodstream. These particles goes to the skeletal muscles of animals as myoglobin. Theoretically you could taste the sugar and fat essence of what it last ate. My conflict is its mostly shell and the meat are not alot. The organic steak i bought from a butcher looks green, especially the marbling. The butcher said its grass fed. After cooking it taste beefy sweet and that after taste of sucking on a after-rain- wet grass leaf. Alot of those red liquid oozes out from the meat.

Some folks blanch them before freezing.
Good video
Not sure about fresh frozen, but the frozen ones you buy turn black and nasty after about a day.
They'll turn black if you don't blanch them before freezing.

Jboat571 X Yep, sure sounds like they were blanched with that color. Dunno, we've done that but we keep them refrigerated and away from ice or water.

Has anyone tried salting sand fleas and freezing them? I know you can salt squid, shrimp, and other baits to preserve them and use at a later date
pmp521 sounds like alot to go thru considering theire very easy to catch u can find tons just sitting on the shoreline by the damp sand
pmp521 they burrow a few inches in the sand take a hand scoop up the sand and youll have a few right in your hand
So this is what I saw on Instagram
Can you feed them with coconut or anything fatty. It might help make them 😋
That’s a good question! I have not heard of anyone doing that but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Thanks for watching and commenting.
