Actual Crash Flight Takeoff Footage. Dan and Glenn - Lockheed 12A

  • The purpose of the flight was just a simple evening flight to confirm everything good, but also to show the flap position indicator and using the checklist to verify that the flaps are up before takeoff. This had been the fatal error in the California 12A crash just days prior to this.
    The tailwheel locked or unlocked on Takeoff or Landing doesn't really matter, and the early 12A's were built without the feature. A locking tailwheel is sometimes handy for long straight taxi in crosswind, but actually a huge hinderance during normal takeoff and landing.

      Read the title. The crash did not happen on takeoff. I assume a basic level of knowledge by viewers about the story, but maybe I shouldn't. The landing was not filmed in any way. This is same flight, but it is all I have. This is the ACTUAL CRASH FLIGHT TAKEOFF FOOTAGE.

    Interesting how dishonesty is universally shunned until it comes to a video title on UA-cam, then all of a sudden there's some kind of fudge factor where neighborly decency is concerned. 167 comments and 123 thumbs up to the person who said, "there was no crash in this video." Your excuse.. "read the title." Yeah, not intentionally misleading at all, Dan. The things people can justify to themselves during this temporary little stay in the flesh here on Earth... truly impressive sir.

    I understand the purpose of this flight was mainly to show the flap indicator and switch, referenced to the crash on takeoff of the other 12A a couple of weeks previous. Pilot is obviously competent and familiar with this plane's flight characteristics and checklists were followed. Too sad about the other end of this flight.

    Any update on the brake failure? I'm speculating it could have had something to do with retracting and lowering the gear. You indicated previously that a brake pedal test may have shown a spongy pedal. Would the pedal test have needed to be done after lowering the gear?
    How does the FAA accident investigation work in this incident? Are they calling it a ground loop? Did they impound the plane? or did it just go back in Glen's hanger? Maybe a video on the investigation process?

  • @alk672
    @alk672 Місяць тому +4

    Yeah that is a small airfield to fly that thing out of. One thing goes wrong and it’s over. And of course ironic how focus on one thing lead to the pilot missing the other. Flap indicator checked - tail wheel lock missed. I know Dan doesn’t care about locking the tail wheel, but the pilot always locked it on previous flights from what I understand. Flying with another person is already a distraction in itself. Whenever I’ve made a serious mistake flying - that was almost always an instructional flight with a CFI saying things in my ear.

    Well Groot, I see the orange bracket that gave you the beauty mark. People should be aware of aftermarket devices which could be very harmful in event of a hard landing or crash. Our company one time fabricated some home made "brackets" to place your headset on when not in use. That really bothered me because I told them, in event of an accident, they could injure a person much worse than if they were not there, they ended up re-locating the bracket to the bulhead behind the pilots and co-pilots seat. That orange bracket looks much sturdier than the stainless sheet metal brackets we fabricated! Looks like it could have punctured a normal person's skull. Glad you have a hard head! 😱🤣😂 Haa! It shows the tail wheel touching down then briefly lifting off & the tail wheel swinging to the left (indicating it isn't locked at that time) before it touches down again. The aircraft veered off the runway to the left. Dan has said that the tail wheel didn't contribute to the accident, which was caused by hydraulic leak on the right main gear brake, after maintenance. (Hydraulic union possibly slackened by olio compression on landing or during gear retraction/extension).
