- It's time to get things in shape at the chateau. Elias and I go exploring the forest on the golf cart, I have a gruelling workout session, the greenhouse gets a makeover and I make some chutney in the gardeners cottage.

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

Yes, that Patriarch is something else, isn't he? Leads by example and taught his family a healthy work ethic. This family is the best and a joy to watch.
When I sat down at my computer this morning I had a choice. I could scroll through the news and be pummeled with doom and despair, or I could take a break from that and watch Michael clean up the greenhouse and make chutney. I chose the latter and now I feel calm and relaxed. Thanks for this!

Michael throw some mustard seed in before u replant tomatoes to prevent disease and rebalance your soil. I'm a seed saver and have a small seed company here in Australia and you're spot on re tomatoes. I'm also slowly retiring and you guys are a pleasure to watch. Thank you

@@happyhead63 In the soil - let them grow and then dig them back into the soil as a "green manure". The mustard plants repel nematodes & pests which can attack tomatoes and cause disease.

I think the name “Peter Pepper” for the Lizard. But better names might come along. The greenhouse looks really nice.

Remember how it felt when you filmed the Lake District and you walked the paths of Peter Rabbit's creator? We were right there with you and the beautiful love of Miss Potter, her Lake District. We are on this journey with you. I remember laying in bed with my Peter Rabbit books as a child and now I watch you bring the spirit of Miss Potter to the heart of so many. That little girl was resurrected and I remember all the excitement of going to the library with my friends for Peter Rabbit week. We are on this journey with you! It's a wonderful addition to the Chateau's. Continue the story Michael!
Michael, I still think you could write and illustrate the stories of a little boy named Ernest who lives in a fairy tale chateau and who befriends all sorts of creatures living on the estate with him. Mr. Lizard which lives in the green house could be one of them.

Beatrix Potter had a lizard named Judy!
We have many lizards at our property just a few kilometres away from LaLande. We call them all Eddie after the famous English comedian. We also have a crow called Russell here in the UK.

I really love the energy of "the recipe calls for this but I don't have that so we're using this instead" repeated for basically every ingredient. Use what you've got!

I am again overwhelmed with the beauty of your home. The cottage looks wonderful but so does the cobbled walkways and the rustic greenhouse. You did such a good job in that greenhouse. It looked haunted when you began but it now looks ready for spring. And you got chutney and a baby lemon tree out of it. Really lovely.

I've grown tomatoes by placing a slice of a store bought tomato on soil in a small glass jar and covering with soil. I was amazed it worked. Unfortunately, the neighborhood deer were impressed too
