If Ned Stark told Robert that his children were not his own:
    - Robert executes Jaime and Cersei, not sure what he will do to the kids.
    - Table is turned. Tywin is now being the rebel, declaring war against the crown.
    - Stannis assembles ships at Dragonstone. Renly calls the banners of Storm's end, Highgarden automatically joins.
    - Ned tells Robb to call the banners of the north.
    - Now we have Winterfell, Highgarden, Storm's end and Riverrun against Casterly Rock. Stannis' ships as well. Tywin is fucked.

If we go by that logic:
1.) Then Stannis would have been a better King then all of them combined because ser Davos believed it and he was a respected Commander and soldier.
2.) Renly should have sat the Iron Throne because Loras believed he would have been a better King then all of them because he was loved by all.
3.) Robb would have been a better King because his mother believed it and he is a Stark you know. The one family who has been ruling their Kingdoms for thousands of years way before the Targaryens even heard of Westeros.
Whenever ser Barristan sings Rhaegars praises I take it with a pinch of salt because just like ser Davos, Loras Tyrell and Catelyn Stark he was biased as fuck towards Rhaegar. Yes he would have made a better King then Aerys, Robert and Joffrey but so would all of the Kings I listed above.
And way before he was crowned King he had already pissed of three of the Kingdoms he was supposed to rule.
1.) Stormlands for taking the betroth of Robert Baratheon the Lord Paramount of the Stormlands.
2.) Dorne for running of with Lyanna Stark while he was married to Princess Elia Martell and has fathered two children on her already.
3.) The North for running off with the Lord Paramounts daughter without an explanation or reason whatsoever.
And you know if Ned Stark knew how to play the Game of Thrones and wasn't so steadfast in his believes he would have made a better King then all of them. I admit I might be biased towards him but if he rules the seven Kingdoms with a good queen and has a good small council I could see him doing great things but that's just my opinion lol.

To all those who think Ned was stupid for standing up to the Lannisters, the alternative is to let them get away with murder, rape and arson. Ned was under no illusion that this would be easy, he knew there were risks but he chose to challenge tyranny rather than shut up. That doesn't make him stupid, it makes him just, courageous and principled, and ten times the man cowards like Gregor and Tywin are. The only glitch was that Robert died, which he couldn't have foreseen. Maybe the stupidest and most cowardly thing was to let the Lannisters get away with their crimes and do nothing.

Almost forgot how incredibly well done season 1 of this show was. Up to tywin's death being very good as well. Sure... the littlefinger expositing is unrealistic for book readers but forgivable and useful. Then you have pycelle's Lannister loyalties and corruption in the kings court being flashed brilliantly. Ned's slight expression of irritation at their pestering as he just wants to listen to the plaintiff . Then the great reaction of astonishment and the subsequent admiration of the countrymen at ned's decicive pledge for justice to be brought upon the lannisters. Then the little baelish and ned dialogue at the end. Sean bean captures a brilliant physical presence and vocal character that has tones of steadfastness, courage and power, mixed with clear traces of fear, concern, confusion and strain. I particularly like his commanding conviction when he shuts up Pycelle towards the end. Great characters in a great scene in a great show.

Loved this scene in both the books and show, even though they were very different. The book version had Loras stepping forward and wanting the honour of bringing the Mountain to justice, but Ned turned him down. and went with Ser Beric. I think it was Littlefinger that later pointed out to Ned the missed opportunity of not picking Loras, and of how he could have gained favour with the Tyrell's. It was suppose to be a win/win situation for Ned in this case, first was Loras being successful in bringing in the Mountain. That would help bring both Houses closer, and if Loras failed and got killed by the Mountain, would add another enemy to the Lannister's long list of enemies and making the Tyrell's allies to Ned. But of course, Ned being Ned didn't see it that way.

That would have brought House Tyrell against the Lannisters and on Ned and Robert's side, mainly if they also found out Cersei's kids were Jamie's. They would not pass the chance to wed Margaery to Robert, even if it meant losing Loras.
Look at it like a chess move, sacrificing a piece for something much bigger. Loras also a third son with nothing to inherit, no big loss when you still have Willas and Garlan.
And we also know from Ned's chapters that he was not thinking about that, it was more of him looking down on Loras as not fit or capable for the job, when in reality he was the best option. Good fighter from a wealthy family and had a much larger host with him at King's Landing that was capable of getting the job done.

Eddard could have taken the throne for himself but he passed it up. It was he, not Robert, who arrived at King's Landing. The Lannisters had sacked the city and were waiting for Ned's army to arrive; and when Ned arrived he found Jaime sat on the Iron Throne. Ned removed him from the throne: all Ned had to do was sit in it himself and he would've been King. Even Robert says that Ned should've been King. The whole war was between the Starks and Targaryens. It started because the Mad King executed Eddard's older brother and his father. The Mad King then ordered that Eddard be executed too. Ned was a ward under Jon Arryn at the time alongside Robert Baratheon. Jon Arryn refused to obey the command and revolted prompting the rebellion. I think that the fact that he had lost so much in the south was the reason he refused the throne. His father, older brother and his sister were all dead. He just wanted to go home.
*Massive Spoiler?*: He also promised something to his sister that likely prompted him to return home rather than take the throne: he had to keep Jon's identity a secret and keep him out of the way of the watchful eyes of King's Landing and "hidden away up north" as Cersei would say. Remember, Rhaegar Targaryen + Lyanna Stark = Jon (Snow). Given what happened to the other Targaryen children it makes sense to hide him away.

But no, Ned didn't want to be king either, and let Robert take the throne on the basis of his Targaryen blood rather than Right of Conquest. As his friend, he should've have known what Robert can and cannot do; while the man was a skilled warrior and commander, he was a shit ruler and administrator. And now the Seven Kingdoms are paying for that awful decision they made several years ago when deciding "who gets to sit in the world's most uncomfortable chair?"

We don't even get a scene with Ned sitting on it for the first time, he's just on it, and I love that. It's a great way to illustrate that neither Ned or Robert actually care about it.

I love this scene. Robert picked Ned as hand for exactly this reason, his no nonsense style of ruling. But Robert would have likely objected to this in order to avoid civil war. Ned Stark stands up with the aid of his cane, levies the harshest of sentences onto Gregor Clegane, and if everyone wasn't shocked enough by his aggressive use of power to hold an anointed knight accountable for his crimes, he then takes it ten steps further and informs everyone that he plans to hold Clegane's lord, Tywin Lannister, responsible as well.

@@hafeezasif7932 I doubt it. If that happened then the Tully’s would’ve had no choice but to raise their banners and wage war against the Westerlands. This would’ve drawn the Starks in and their vassals since Catelyn is also a Tully. Robert appreciates Tywin’s assistance but he still isn’t too keen of him and will side with the Starks. Which means the Vale would’ve sided with the crown and so would the Reach (especially if Renly still married Margaery in this scenario). This was definitely the best route for Eddard to go down out of bad options.

If Ned were any smarter or sneakier, he'd know that him being king is what was best for the realm. The funny thing about this show and politics in general is that the people who would actually be great rulers and truly care about their constituents are the ones who are never devious enough to win the seat.
