Looks awesome! My only suggestion - as someone who installs countertops for a living - don't silicone ONTO the cabinet then place the stone on it, rather put the stone in place then go up from inside and silicone where the stone meets the cabinet walls. This way, you're not tearing apart your cabinets if you want to change your countertops in the future. You'd just simply run your knife across the silicone, much like you did when cutting the silicone away from the splash and countertop in the beginning of the vid.
We have laminate in our kitchen. We've only had it for 5 years. Looks dark and I want something lighter. Of course my husband is having a fit (can't blame him) because to take of our laminate, it will be a tough job because they glued it down tight, not just silicone where the stone meets the cabinet walls. So we are screwed in terms of tearing this out. He is afraid it will not only hurt our new cabinets but will destroy the bottom part of our backsplash tile. I wish someone knowledgeable could help us remove it. Also have an 8' x 3' island. My husband thinks adding quart to this length will cost up to $5,000 just for a quartz or Solid Surface put on. I just don't what to do at this point.
@@theresahemmer3725 You can also install new laminate over existing laminate. My friend's mother had it done on the laminate that was installed in the 90's. The new laminate was a replica of marble. Looked beautiful.

I am pretty sure that quartz does not need a sealer but granite does, and yes the process is quite simple. And only needed about every 5 years or so. cheers!

After researching countertops I believe the best one to use is quartzite. It's harder than Quartz and they have some really nice colors I lean towards an all white kitchen with some different marksing in the countertop. I also really like glass countertops.

You have a good demeanor so you won't even get mad at me for calling you a goof....double kudos
Just had laminate countertops installed because of the cost differential - wish I had seen this video sooner. It may have given me the courage to try quartz.
Super video. Information is top notch. Two key points you mentioned that I did not know or had forgotten: quartz matrix damaged by heat and the resale of a used house to buyers.
Please guys. The countertop was installed against the tile (not underneath the tile). Just check when he puts the last drop of silicone he lifts the countertop about 2”
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE INFO. WE ARE IN PROCESS OF REDOING OUR KITCHEN. i WAS GOING TO GO WITH THE QUARTZ UNTIL YOU SAID GRANITE WOULD BE BETTER thanks for saving us a lot of headaches and work. keep up the wonderful DIY's
Ottawa always seemed so far away but it was close enough to apply to Utah projects because of the good similarities between Canada and the U.S. We will be in Canada’s beautiful capital this year and these videos will make me feel more at home when we come there to research family roots. Thanks again Jeff for the excellent and practical advice. Why not enjoy a renovated kitchen long before you sell it. Goodbye Formica, hello quartz. Congratulations on your excellent UA-cam success. You’ve earned it, black eye and all.
Loved watching your UA-cam channel. Learned a lot new techniques for home improvements from you. Besides you funny and you made projects more interesting to watch.
Love your instructional videos, actually the wife does . . . because she watches them and tels me JUST FOLLOW WHAT HE DOES! Thanks, really thank you for your tips and tricks. I am sure there will be more DIY's in my near future.
You scared me about the old countertops, you’re absolutely right nobody will buy a house with old countertops, well depending on the buyers, but for good insurance I will definitely replace my countertops before I sell my home!
Thank you so much for this! I'm remodeling my 1901 house by myself, and I'm learning as I go. This helps me very much. I love your channel. Keep up the good work!
That's great! I have to do my bathroom too, so I'll definitely be watching. I appreciate your response. :) You're saving me a lot of money and teaching me a lot. Thank you!
It's true, I tell all new home owners to immediately change all countertops from laminate to some sort of stone. This way, not only can the owners enjoy the property more, but it also raises the value of the property if they ever decide to sell it. Don't make the mistake of doing major renovation right before you sell the property, though it'll raise the value of the property up by quite a bit, but it just makes you feel stupid for not doing it earlier so that you can enjoy it more.
I think installing quartz can be a DYI, yust gotta do a sink over the counter. If the kitchen has no turns then its no problem at all. Love your videos, I have a lot of experience but pick up something from every video.
In most cases your counter top will not slide out that easily. The tile or whatever backsplash is there is going to overlap it and in addition to the underside screws, there is likely going to be some additional adhesive securing the counter top to the cabinets. This video shows the ideal situation.
I just ordered granite countertops. 51 sq feet, new undermount stainless steel sink, and gooseneck faucet. $4400. Not including the plumber. The charge is $500.00 to remove a butcherblock just laying on my island and 3 pieces or formica. So for about a dozen screws a $500.00 charge... hmmm Guess I will try to take it apart myself and save the money after watching this video. DO you also have a video of you removing the sink and installing the gooseneck faucet?? Excellent video, just what I wanted to see. Cheers...
That new counter top look nice, and the part on the other side of the stove was so heavy until you must have had one or two extra helpers to assist in putting it on. I love the work you did and how fine it looks.
I just moved to whidbey island, WA and I am currently on the market to buying a house. Let me tell you those homes out there are outdate as hell and they are extremely over priced! Thanks for the video now I know how to upgrade countertop, differently going to negotiate with the price and update the 80’s tile countertops.
Most installers would not recommend gluing the stone to the cabinets otherwise if the top is ever damaged the cabinets could be damaged when it is removed. Instead they would have pulled out the stove and done a bead of caulk or silicone around the perimeter of the cabinet under the overhang. That way if it needs to be removed the silicone can be cut and the top lifted without damaging the cabinets. Also your comment about not getting quartz hot is incorrect, I worked in a stone shop and there were blow torches used on quartz all the time to quickly dry it off. Now I am a cabinet and counter top dealer and highly recommend quartz over granite. Granite varies in density and the lighter colors tend to chip or crack quite a bit and need repaired. Also they need sealed EVERY year or else they will stain.
Eric! to tell people that the resin does not change appearance after it gets too hot is irresponsible. We both know the torch is just contacting the surface for a fraction of a second. BTW I would suggest using a rag to dry the counter after cutting.
Yup on the counters! I'm considering buying the condo I'm renting but this is my beef. Still has original counters. So looking at alternatives for renovations.
Granite and quartz not that expensive if you know where to buy it. I've purchased 25" x 8' granite slabs for as little as $70 a few years ago, it maybe $150 now. For about $300 and up you have some nice eye popping choices. Completely doable for DIYs with the exception of cutouts for under-mount sinks. That you need the right tools and lots of practice.
Home RenoVision DIY Ha! Exactly!! That was one of the first videos I viewed also. Okay, come on Jeff...since you mentioned it...what the heck happened with your eye? Was it a disgruntled homeowner, an unhappy worker, a ....? Lastly, who won? That was great, I think it was a bathroom remodel video I was watching, where you had the shiner. You trudged forth like nothing happened. That was admirable!
The second video I saw was the black eye as well. I’ve been wondering what happened. 😆. But it’s nice that you can joke about it. I like you so I hope YOU wasn’t the jerk in the situation.
It was easy for you to remove that old counter top. However, I just did mine and my Formica counter tops were made on site. Therefore, the particle board was nailed to the cabinets and then the Formica installed over the nailed particle boards. Additionally, the counter tops were flush with the drywall. On top of that, tile back splash was installed over the counter tops - no back gaps. To make matters worse, there were two 45 degree angles plus a 90 degree in one of the counter tops. It was a continuous 12 - 13 foot top. Needless to say, it was much more difficult to remove the counter tops than the one you removed in your video. I eventually accomplished it by cutting the counter top into "jigsaw puzzle" and removing it piece by piece - but it sure took me longer than it took you. By the way, I had the new quartz counter top professionally installed. I was not about to take on that task with at 12 foot multi angled counter top. Yea, to install a 2 x 3 foot no angle rectangle top - OK, no big deal; but that was not my situation. But to be clear, I love your videos overall; it is just that my situation with the counter tops was rather different as I had about 50 s.f. to do and two of the three counter tops were multi angled and long.
Always enjoy your videos, 2 thumbs up. Any DIY suggestion on the leaking vinyl decking if the deck structure is good? Can we replace some materials on top of the existing vinyl instead of replacing the whole plywood and the old vinyl sheets. Your comments are highly appreciated.
Loved this video! Thank you so much Jeff! Hey, so would you say that quartz countertops are equally as valuable in home sale, as is granite? We're thinking of changing out the granite to quartz & wondered about solid surface materials like this. thanks!!

I know most contractors probably think plywood is impractical as a countertop, or for flooring, walls, ceilings, and so on, but I absolutely love the look. No, I don't want it everywhere in the house, (even though I have seen those videos), but there are plausible uses for it. Do you have any videos on the subject, and/or what are your thoughts about using plywood sheeting in various places around the home, Jeff? And thank you for another useful video.
A good finished cabinet grade plywood as a countertop can be quite nice with the right finish. You do need to use a drop in sink however. But great economical way of doing things. Cheers!

Would you recommend marble for a counter top? Also, can marble handle heat, unlike quartz?
