      I was always worried about my check rides. My instructor said something that made me relax: "If you invite everyone who was NEVER failed a check ride to party, its going to be pretty dull". Made me laugh and took the pressure off.

      Your summary was extremely beneficial because of your genuine approach without excuses. You provided the fog and friction of being in the arena battling. You are the chief critic honing your skill and all those barking options have little impact. Thank you for the recapitulation that helps us learn!

    During my training, there were a couple times I went to the airport and just wasn't feeling it that day. I just felt like my focus wasn't sharp enough to be in the air. My instructor liked the fact that despite having the plane rented and him meet me at the airport, I stilled called it off. He said, "The FAA and pilots everywhere thank you for exercising good judgement." Instead, we did ground school and prep for the next flight. Cudos to you for being safe over all else.

      Really honestly and truly.. there is zero pressure on you to pass. Think of it as an appraisal of the knowledge and skills you have gained to this point, we all like to think we are good pilots, if you fail or have some shortcomings these will be shown to you, which will then give you the chance to improve. The worst thing is not knowing what aspects we are weak at. So try and relax and treat it as a part of the learning process. You will however most probably pass. It is unlikely your CFI would put you forward for the GST without believing you are ready for it.

    Landed on this video as a random recommendation, and since I’m an instructor, I clicked on it. I had a PPL discontinuance myself because my DPE wanted to be extra careful with the paperwork (IACRA was new at the time, too), so I’m always curious to see what others have faced. • @alk672
      @alk672 Рік тому

      It's crazy how easy high air work is in a Piper. I trained in a C-150, and I couldn't believe how docile Piper was once I got checked out in it. Everything - from steep turns to stalls, and even leaf stalls feels like it's on autopilot. I imagine it's because of all that dihedral. It's so stable it presents zero challenge compared to a Cessna even, it won't drop the wing no matter how much you stall it.

    • @alk672
      @alk672 Рік тому

      @@theljungholmfamily Buffeting is not full stall, it's "a sign of impending stall". A full stall is defined as an uncommanded drop of the nose. Basically the idea is that once you've passed the critical AOA the lift diminishes, and that can be observed by the nose dropping while you're still pulling.

    • @rickwiggins283
      @rickwiggins283 Рік тому

      I've never been able to get a 161 or 181 to stall in a power-on and keep it at a max 20 degrees. I have to let off a good bit of power to make it drop.

    This is a great video. Very awesome and very good job handling the day. Very interesting, I started training at Apopka about 10 years back, that is a thin runway and to have 17 kt xwind!! but I just got my private cert in Pennsylvania last year. Its very interesting the differences between DPE's, the surprises that you had on checkride, should have been covered by your instructor, you need to ding him, he should have grilled you on the diversion. I had to do everyhting with paper, my DPE did not allow foreflight or GPS. Doing that diversion with a paper chart, was horrible. It was a hazy day I could not see my checkpoints, i was totally faking it lol. Also he made my engine out landing on a small runway and I had to hit the first 1/3 of runway, I missed first attempt and thought I failed, but he let me try again.

    17 gusting 20 X wind, I would definitely discontinue too. Short field is extra challenging in those condition. I guess you can come in flap 20 and explain you're using less flaps for rudder authority and fly the airplane on the number. But full flaps and gusting is a recipe for failing the checkride. You can aim for the grass and slip into the landing like those professionals do but DPE can grab the control anytime and say you're not lined up with the CTR line. Alternatively, full aileron into the wind and full rudder while slipping into the runway all the way down and pray that the wind doesn't push you off the CTR line when you're in ground effect and pray for fast foot retrieval so you don't steer towards the side abruptly. Add to the fact that the sight picture will be different with a higher approach angle due to the headwind and he can say you are high and you will balloon and taking the control anyway. So many ways things can go wrong.

    I feel like this is what happens to a lot of us on checkride day. Honestly it should feel like a routine flight, but man was I wrong. I had my checkride 4 days ago and thankfully I passed. It was not a regular routine flight, I had a TFR over my airport that went away within the last 10 minutes before my scheduled time. Engine took 5 attempts to start eventually the guy had to troubleshoot it. the attitude indicator was 45 DEGREES OFF and were sitting there for 5 minutes and its up to me to figure out what to do. Me being an idiot thought I could use that as a "zero reference", man I'm glad we didn't let that slide. We just shut down the engine restarted it and somehow it restabilized. The timer wasn't starting up for my simulated XC and I should've done what I did many times with my CFI and that is just use my phone timer. The examiner was just not having it then. I was just really stressed to where I was getting slight chest pain at that point. I probably should've also discontinued and have a little redo. The only problem I had was the deadline to complete the checkride was in 7 days I was so so close and did not want to repeat a semester. Well, everyone says I am very safe I work really hard and take this very seriously so I'm still very proud even though I didn't pass with flying colors. Keep going, getting this through is worth it! I cannot wait to know what it is like to fly as a private pilot now.

    Is the use of foggles normal in FAA PPL checkrides? Here in Iceland the examiner just told me to close my eyes and he put the plane into an unusual attitude. It seems odd to do it the other way since you're not practicing for IFR.

    I seriously doubt the DPE would have actually let you do a soft field takeoff with a 19 knot direct cross wind. He would have probably just failed you immediately if you said you were going to do that. I was once almost tipped over by a 10 knot crosswind, it's much, much more dangerous than a landing in similar conditions. You can't see it coming and once your nose goes sideways and the main digs in - you're done. It's crucial to have the correctly varying aileron correction from full power all the way to lift-off, and that is rarely taught or trained enough.

      @@charleseinarson well both me and Chuck Yeager are/were pilots, but just because we happen to use the same word to describe what we do - doesn't mean we do the same thing. All I'm saying is that it's important to keep that distinction in mind.
