Somehow putting the demonic vocals to dreamy shoegaze type music makes the whole thing sound that much more evil and disturbing and deranged. I can see why this was considered one of the best albums of '018
Y'know I just barely heard it for the first time, so I'll get back to ya on that. What I can tell vfc you is that it's absolutely epic. Epic in scope, in performance, whoa. Grandiosity. The whole thing.
It's hard to pick a best one because canary yellow is also thoroughly good, but the scream at the end of this song is by far the best one than I've heard on any of the others
I started listening to the song and came to the comments, and saw the time stamp, so i skipped ahead to hear the scream, and wow, full chills all through my body, even without the buildup
I need more music by Deafheaven, b-sides, rarities, demos, anything. This album was sublime, nothing will ever top Sunbather but man, this was enjoyable, romantic and really beautiful. Hope the best for the band! Also congrats on the Grammy nomination, it seems unreal. Much love.
They have changed. Their first album was all about the heart, this is all about the mind. It's like The Contortionist turned black metal. I love it. Thank you Deafheaven.
Michael Purnell I certainly could do without New Bermuda in their discog, but this album is a great genre bender. I doubt they'll ever top Sun Bather, but this is a step in the right direction
@@ghoulish6125 Feeling exactly the same, New Bermuda was quite an disappointment in comparison to this Album or sunbather in terms of songwriting. These trash / doom rhythm guitar riffs on New Bermuda sounded just out of place to me
Check out all of Sunbather and New Bermuda. Sunbather was the first i heard from Deafheaven and I became a fan from hearing the first song on the album. Everything ive heard from them so far has been amazing
A fantastic album start to finish. Quite surprised by how different each track is from the preceding track, not to mention previous work. Probably my favorite album of the year so far.
At 2:47 the riff sounds awfully like Radiohead's "Man of War". Since that song was released a year ago, I can imagine Deafheaven were listening to it during album recording and the riff leaked unintentionally (or not?) into their song.
I saw them with Baroness at the roseland theater in portland and they started with brought to the water. The drums shook the entire building and they were incredible. The live recordings dont sound all that great on youtube but they sound perfect in person
All this and Chelsea Wolfe, incredible. Now I ain't the most musically up to date guy, but I swear between the these guys and Chelsea and I would assume theres others..it's incredible. Beautiful. A Terrible Beauty. Ok I can't put it to a Twitter. If you've read this far, you know.
That scream at the end is the best scream. Jesus fucking Christ. I feel like I'm at the top of Everest screaming all my existential trauma & pain into the stratosphere. Unreal. One of the best albums ever.
It's funny that people picked up Radiohead - Man Of War so quickly... The first thing I heard was a progression/hook that made me think of Oasis - Live Forever. I love that the guys in this band embrace their britpop influences. It suggests that at the end of the day they are music fans.
Not as good as Sunbather overall to me but god damn this is some heavily emotional and touchingly heartfelt music... Still a new fan, this might grow on me!
Am drunk and all i can say is, i love this, i just love it, concepts r meting away but am sane enough to say i love this, Love u guys, deafheaven and listeners across the human sphere man fuck ilyy
This album is like wild flowers growing in blackest Hell, where rusty swords shine again, and warriors fall in love before they die buried in waves of silent sea.
This album doesn't have black metal influences? Maybe you can't hear the vocals? Or the beginning of Honeycomb, or the blast beats section of Glint? It's definitely not black metal, but it's still clearly influenced and inspired by. They just leaned more on their other influences for this album, IMO it's as good if not better than Sunbather. At least if you go in not expecting a pure "blackgaze" album.
+Jyotirmoy Kalita, I just think the whole album is not very cohesive. When I turn it on, the first half of the first track gets me very emotional, but then this solo comes in and bunch of sunny post-rock/shoegaze comes in. It's good on it's own, but after the full epicness of the first part the transition just sounds stupid, it's just so sudden, there's no progression into it, it just happens, and the same shit on the whole album, I just think they failed to connect heavy/epic black metal parts with melodic, calm post-rock parts (maybe it's the shtick of this album but it just hard to listen to while having a certain mood). They did it a lot better in both sunbather and ordinary corrupt human love (it's like the mood didn't change althoough genres switched). But I still listen to Brought to the water (even though I only listen to the first half, when this solo comes in I often turn it off) and some other tracks occasionally. It's a decent album
Glint should have been the closing track. This is one of the most boring deafheaven songs I've heard. The riff at the start sounds like a mediocre guitar jam
Yes. my main problem with this is the vocals, there more so in the background and just blatantly incomprehensible. as well as they don't fit in with the serene guitar rhythms. Other than the vocals everything else is alright
wtf are you even on about? this is on line with everything else they've made, i don't understand your criticism. Have you heard anything else by them or did you just feel like putting your shitty thoughts out here?

Listening in a dark and silent room, at night and with ear phones is just... Magic
I really think this is the best song on the album. Anyone else?
i think this is one of their best songs ever!
yeah, it's right there at the top with The Pecan Tree for me!

I agree! It keeps sticking in your mind in a pleasant way

Same.
I started listening to the song and came to the comments, and saw the time stamp, so i skipped ahead to hear the scream, and wow, full chills all through my body, even without the buildup
That scream at 7:52 really makes you feel the title of the track. What a way to close the album

Just finished listening to the entire album. The best album of 2018. Period. At least as good as "Sunbather."
this and 'canary yellow' are my favorites.

utterly speechless. i will do anything to watch them live
Even suckle a shriveled corpse's toes?

This and Glint are my 2 'favourite', let's name it, songs for dysthymic relapses. They will stay with me to the very end
This one hits the feels
I listen to this song multiple times a day. It gets me through.
You guys are really good musicians
1:50 :'( so melancholic
fav band since i discovered them in 2017, thanks for making bangin tunes i can always come back to dfhvn
Never head of them before, definitely some of the most interesting stuff I've heard in a while

Yes, you are right. Now listen to Journey of The Sorcerer by The Eagles :)
Gave me chills. Can't wait to see them on tour this august.

... this is a freaking screaming masterpiece ...
I listen to this song to fall asleep 🤷🏼♂️
This might be my favorite off the album
4:20 riffs Maiden cannot reach anymore. #dealwithit
6:07 queue George for a series of windmill headbangs
without fail, i always always mishear the first line in the song at 0:21 as "ohhhhh! i like protein!!"
🤣🤣🤣
Is it just me or is anyone else hearing man of war by Radiohead at 2:50 mark?
Mitch McKenzie ikr?
Yessssss!!!!
THATS WHAT IT IS! been trying to put my finger on the song since release
Yup!!
holy shit this might be the best song ever created
I was the 1000th like, feels kinda satisfying, just wanted to say
I listen to this almost every day, fav song of the album
These guys have been my recent obsession. Deafheaven + World of Warcraft = EPIC :D

It's shoegazing with black metal vocals. The music however has nothing to do with metal though, just the vocals.

Yeah I dunno if I'm sold on this new album yet. I like their earlier stuff which had BM influences. Road to Judah / Sunbather is their best IMO.

Does this remind anyone of Bullet for My Valentine (think: Forever and Always)?
It's those Iron Maiden harmonies ;)
This just sounds like a side project Garm would've had in the late 90s with some modern pop accents.
3:40 sounds like Radiohead man of war
I prefer New Bermuda over this. Still a good album tho...
