I wonder has the winter update changes goosed the fast forwards? Fed up trying to make a tactic with a deep lying forward only to have to return to the advanced forward.
It is a bit annoying to see one role dominate so much in a position regarding the FM23 meta. I do personally enjoy using a DLF with 2 inside forwards, eventhough it might not be the most effective possible option
@@coachroan I really need a 4-2-3-1 DLF tactic with 2 IF. What role should my AM and 2 DM? I want assist score mainly from my DLF but he just keep scoring like AF, he doesnt create chances much. @@hanlein If you want your DLF to be an assist provider, I would suggest your AM to be a Shadow Striker, so he can make the runs into space which your striker can play the ball into. For your DM's you're pretty much free to choose what you want. I personally love a DLP on support with a Segundo Volante on attack or support. This is veeery attacking though, so it will depend on how much risk you want to take. @@coachroan Thank you! DLF with SS brilliant idea and i am playing attacking football so i want that attacking DM's. I am new to fm series so thank you very much
Would you give it a go on tactics by stickpiano and, maybe in another video, tactics by RDF? In my opinion, these two, in their own style, do bring a little more. RDF with his "true to life" I would say scouting report and knowledge of the match engine, and stickpiano with his systematic testings. Great work in your vids, I like your content! Cheers
Thanks for the kind words my friend! Those are two great content creators you mentioned, both of which I watch personally as well. While I like your suggestion, I think they both do such a great job explaining their tactics that I currently don't know if I can add anything to that. Open to suggestions though if you think there's an angle I'm missing!
before watching this video, idk this game has meta like moba. I rarely comment, like and subs in youtube but you got my respect. Appreciate your works, Coach!
I struggled on my first season in Serie B with Venezia. 9 loses 1 draw and 2 wins cause I used Low block, almost got sacked in my final day. Until I change my tactics to Gegenpress, I won 9 matches in a row. Imagine playing Gegenpress in serie B 😵
You found the true power of the gegenpress! I do find it interesting how effective it is, no matter the level of team you're playing as. Hopefully your change of fortune continues, and you can get to the Serie A!
Everyone seems to be overthinking this through the lens of real life. If a tactic is effective in FM it's effective at pretty much any level, because even if your team is struggling to keep the pressing and tempo so is every opponent. Just have to be on top with substitutions.
isnt that obvious that pressing should be much more higher rewarding in lower league? I mean players in lower league can still have high stamina, and work rate and can still play as the instructions said but they dont have players that have enough skill to be press resistent or have good control of the ball nor vision, i have seen some lower league in real life even kick the ball direct in to opponent side just after the game start just to be able to press the throw-ins lol
Why wouldn’t you do that in Serie B? It’s all relative. A guy with 14 stamina in B is as good as a guy with 18 in A, because the players around the guy in B have worse stats, too. It all depends where you’re rated in that specific league. If you’re expected top half you should always press *especially* at home. Always press at home full stop because home advantage is pretty OP
I play wide on the left and narrow on the right. Have my right wingers cutting in and moving through channels. And play main attacks down left.. 4 2 3 1 vertical tiki taka. Triggering press more often and play short passes. Unless I'm playing better teams where I lower tempo and play long balls. I play one BPD, one CD. 2 wing backs. In midfield I play ball winning midfield and box to box. For no. 10 I play attack mid field support. Inside forward on left wing and winger support on right. Upfront I play Complete forward or Pressing forward. I get alot of wins
@@coachroan the above tactics over 242 games played. 74% win 15% draw 12% loss. There are alot of weaknesses in the team at the back where I concede towards 70th minutes second half. First half I tend to dominate. If it looks like the other team are clawing back momentum I will either switch to direct counter and hope for long balls. Switch to wing play and aim for ball at Target Forward f I see the midfield being centrally overlooked that is. I have noticed if you base alot of monthly training around possession, Defending and tactical. You can make the team great off the ball and positioning. When I go to buy wingers or any position I try to go for players with a high tackling and somewhat mediocre bravery stats. I've seen lots of wingers go off with reds on other saves lol. It also helps my teams Pressing ability to retain and get hold of the ball via interceptions. Just my take.
@@kwilliams5260 From what I'm reading, you're taking a proper in depth look at your tactic and team building, which is amazing to see! It can be difficult to put all the puzzle pieces in the right place, so keep trying things out and improve bit by bit. Sounds like you're already on your way!
It's funny, I don't use BPDs but I do like having defenders being able to pass with some competence. I like passing competence in general because it just irks me when I see players pass right to the opposing player lol I don't like higher tempo - guess it seems like my players make better choices on lower tempo. Higher tempo, even with competent (15+) decisions and anticipation, they just seem to make more silly choices.
Part of the beauty of FM (and real life football for that matter) is that you don't have to go super complicated for your tactic to work! A solid 442 with quality CM's can definitely dominate in this years game!
Can't disagree with that, but to be fair it is also a very popular formation in real life. So is FM correctly displaying that fact in the game, or is it just an OP formation? Don't know how I feel about it myself
@@coachroan as you said in your video, A back 3 formation is very popular in Serie A but in FM it doesn't work. The game is biased on the English football too much. The ME has been broken/the same for at least 4 years with barely any improvement. This also show the technical limitation of the game. You cannot play with something that has not been coded. Even if it makes sense. I love the game but feels it's more apparent that buying it every other year or even three years is more than enough as there is not enough update in between. Now that the game is also available on Gamepass, I will defo check it there before buying any in the future.
@@samikazbe Using a back 3 does introduce a new fun challenge though, especially since 2 of the OP tactics did make it work! I think the Gamepass is an ideal solution for anyone who has doubts on if the new edition would be worth it. Great thinking by the FM team!
I used a preset gegenpress tactic for my south korea team after a draw and loss in my first 2 games at the 2022 world cup. Decided to use the genepress for the 3rd game and i demolished portugal. Used it for the rest of the tournament and lost on penalties in the finals after going 3-0 down at half time
@@coachroan decided to take on Vaduz, finally. Am using 4-2-4 with two segundo volantes on support and balanced mentality. This tactic has been hugely successful for me in few previous saves, but they were all with bigger clubs (Milan, Hertha, Juve, England). Definitely 2DM formations are a thing this year.
Would have to depend on the rest of your tactic. A lot of the OP tactics with 2 strikers used 2 AF's. You could also try a Target Forward, to give you a different type of outlet going forward
A 424 is difficult to get right defensively. The key is to get your midfield two right. These 2 players need to be sensible, solid players who won't get out of position fast, cause if they do there is a huge gap in front of your defence. Is this what you're noticing with your tactic as well?
@@cvetans91 I'd advice you to look at your midfield roles, positions and where you're leaving space. If changing the midfielders doesn't help, try and analyse where the goals are coming from, and then change a role or two to fill up the hole that's causing the goals
I'd be happy to help! I would need a bit more information to really help you out though. Where in the save are you? (First season or already further in) What specifically are you struggling with: Not getting wins, conceding too much, struggling financially?
Ok bro , i would like to ask something here, how can you make FM fun, coz with me if i pick a top team i win everything in 1 or 2 seasons and there is nothing left to play for so i lose interest in the game. If i pick a mid table team it would take me 3 or 4 years to do the same thing ie winning everything competition, if i pick a lower league , it would just delay the outcome which is winning everything eventually . Journeyman mode is also not fun after u win everything with a lot of clubs. Is there is a way to play FM like some sort of save which will have something to do even after playing it for a good period of time.
I think we've all been here at some point, not being intrigued by any new save any more. The first thing that you could do (and what you might not expect me to say) is take a break from FM. From reading your comment it sounds like you've played FM a lot, so it might be best to just step away for a bit, try out some other games or hobbies. Eventually that anticipation to try out a new save will return, and you'll be back to a new exciting save in no time. The second thing I would say is you can ask yourself what you enjoy most about real life football. Do you love the team you support? Do you love a particular league, or a particular type of team? Find what you like the most, and return to that for your next save. Some general suggestions I want to add are different challenge saves, such as building a team with limitations (youth only challenge, one nation only challenge etc.) What I enjoy specifically for long term saves is building one super team, and then taking a job at a different team in the same league, so I can try and beat the super team I built myself. Hope this helps my friend!
@@coachroan Thanks for the reply, i do exactly the same thing usually. I take a break , then i feel like playing it again after a period of time. But even then when i start that new save i would eventually fall into that cycle again. I wish there were some way to play FM where you arent sure that you will succeed eventually. Like in other online multiplayer FPS games or like FIFA where you can keep playing it for 10 years but that excitment would still be there coz you nevr know whats gonna happen.
@@PeacefulSoul6 Based on what you're describing, maybe the online modes are more to your tastes. You can enter an online career, drafts or versus matches, and get a more unpredictable gameplay experience as your facing a real life opponent. You can check it out, and see if you like it!

@@RapidReload. Osimhen is definitely one of the best strikers in this years game! Good luck on your next save, you'll get that Champions League no doubt!
Interesting question. For me it would have to depend on what type of save I'm building the tactic for. If I was playing a longer term save where I would want to get really immersed, I would build a tactic from the ground up while taking these findings into account (e.g. maybe using a DM instead of a CM). If I was trying a challenge save on the other hand where I want the best results possible, I would much more closely replicate the OP tactics, only making slight adjustments to fit my current team
@@danjames2494 that is the eternal struggle of tactics in FM (and also what makes it so fun). If you're set on using him as a shadow striker, I would suggest a 4231 with 2 DMs

No worries my man, these trends are not an absolute must have in your tactics. They are only an indication of what is working for the most OP tactics out there. But if your tactic has a solid tactical foundation, you can defintely make it work! If you're worried about your own tactic though, check out this video where I run down some of the most common tactical mistakes, and how you can fix them! ua-cam.com/video/dKrcScMTHAw/v-deo.html
I don't know if there is a single "best" tactic, as how well a tactic will perform will depent on the players on your team. Looking at the OP tactics, a singular "best" tactic would be something along the lines of a 4231 with 2 DM's, with a lot of attacking roles and a high pressing system. But be sure to analyse your own team, and find what suits your players best!
While the style of football you're able to play will be very different down in level 10, the majority of these tactical trends will still hold through at that level!
What I would say is that tactical tastes differ from coach to coach, and how effective a tactic will be will also depend on the players in your team and if they're capable of executing the tactic. You certainly don't have to use these specific tactical trends, but these do seem very powerful. What kind of tactic do you prefer?
@@coachroan Fm base haven't tested after the new patch, and they haven't tested that many tactic, FM arena test 10-20 every day and each tactic is tested over 640-1900 matches, they also write a lot about how the tactic tester is set up. Much better site than FM base overall imo.
tactics like this only works in this game. exploiting game system and what this game favors more. i like realistic tactics more. but not possible with this game. Still it's fun game.
It depends on what you define as "works with this game". I do fully agree that there are tactics and tricks that work better in the game than might be realistic, but any real life tactic that is succesfully translated to the game will work fine as well! That's also the beauty of this game, you can play it however you want.
There are certainly more sites providing valuable tactical databases, FM Arena being one of them! For this video I decided to use FM Base's tactics, but FM Arena is quality as well!
These tactics won't work on lower league beacuse the league lacking of quality posession based player in fact, narrow diamond are the best performing tactics i have when conquering vanarama north/south and nationals with DLP as central point. my DLP currenlty have the highest assists when the player have passing long ball trait
The tactics were based on 23.1.0, but I haven't seen or felt any major changes since the update that would make these OP tactics any less effective. @Charles Black even managed to dominate the Vanarama South using these tactical trends! (Check out his comment)
The fun thing is that you can play it however you like! Want to focus on getting the best possible tactic in this match engine? You can! Want to recreate a real life tactic as close as possible? You can! Whatever suits you best is what you should go with
So i know this is an old video but please every contentmaker for FM, inform your viewers that you CANT make tactics work without talking playingstyle and what players are at your dispossal. This is like saying "i have tasted almost all good meals and they all use garlic. So if you want to make the best dinner use garlic". Dude. It just does not work that way !!!
And that's the beauty of FM! While some people would swear by wingers, others only use wingerless tactics! Which tactic has been your favourite this year?

@@liamhartley2300 Thanks man! Do you mean which team I support IRL? If so, I support PSV!
@@coachroan I remember them winning the champions league in 88 I think? They had a good side...tough right now though with Ajax isn't it.
@@liamhartley2300 yeah, our biggest trophy win! We've really been struggling this season, not just with Ajax but also Feyenoord and AZ.
How about you? Who do you support?
(My DLF is Icardi and his mental is very good after the update) Can you suggest antything man? I will be very appreciate.
My final suggestion would be to maybe try something like a False Nine if you really want your ST to focus on assisting instead of scoring
@@coachroan Thank you! DLF with SS brilliant idea and i am playing attacking football so i want that attacking DM's. I am new to fm series so thank you very much
@@hanlein You're absolutely welcome! Firmino is perfect for that false nine role. Let me know how the tactical tweaks work out for you!
@@Draddar Can't disagree with you there. How realistic it might seem, it's still just a game, so what works in this engine works in this engine
isnt that obvious that pressing should be much more higher rewarding in lower league?
Sounds like an amazing tactic!
@@coachroan thanks coach. You definitely know your stuff for sure. Keep up the great videos
Great vid mate, thank u for breaking it down
You're welcome my friend, and thanks for the nice words!
It's funny, I don't use BPDs but I do like having defenders being able to pass with some competence. I like passing competence in general because it just irks me when I see players pass right to the opposing player lol
I don't like higher tempo - guess it seems like my players make better choices on lower tempo. Higher tempo, even with competent (15+) decisions and anticipation, they just seem to make more silly choices.
4-4-2 Attack - Harass and run at them. Have a good CM who can dictate games.
Job done.
Part of the beauty of FM (and real life football for that matter) is that you don't have to go super complicated for your tactic to work! A solid 442 with quality CM's can definitely dominate in this years game!
now i'm proud i won the champions league with my 442 narrow :d
ok it took me 10 years but i did it lol
You should be proud! Winning the CL is no joke, no matter how long it takes you!
What kind of tactics were you running with?
4 - 2 -3 - 1 have been OP for the last 3 or 4 opus at least.
This is some great analysis!
Thanks for the kind words!

I used a preset gegenpress tactic for my south korea team after a draw and loss in my first 2 games at the 2022 world cup. Decided to use the genepress for the 3rd game and i demolished portugal. Used it for the rest of the tournament and lost on penalties in the finals after going 3-0 down at half time
Taking South Korea to a world cup final is impressive! Did you manage them during a save with a club, or did you start an international focused save?
Great idea for a video and a great video. Thanks!

@@piotrwoejko5857 Good to hear! What kind of save are you running, and what's your tactic looking like?
@@coachroan decided to take on Vaduz, finally. Am using 4-2-4 with two segundo volantes on support and balanced mentality. This tactic has been hugely successful for me in few previous saves, but they were all with bigger clubs (Milan, Hertha, Juve, England). Definitely 2DM formations are a thing this year.

Gegenpress and tackle harder. Needed instructions on this year

What is a good option for a striker partnership to go with AF? I can’t really do DLF because I have an AP.
Would have to depend on the rest of your tactic. A lot of the OP tactics with 2 strikers used 2 AF's. You could also try a Target Forward, to give you a different type of outlet going forward

Thanks for the kind words!
can you make for 4-2-4i had a ot lot of goals and i conecerds alot of goals..😅
A 424 is difficult to get right defensively. The key is to get your midfield two right. These 2 players need to be sensible, solid players who won't get out of position fast, cause if they do there is a huge gap in front of your defence. Is this what you're noticing with your tactic as well?
@coachroan yes i scored a lot of goals but they scored alot against me ...
@@cvetans91 I'd advice you to look at your midfield roles, positions and where you're leaving space. If changing the midfielders doesn't help, try and analyse where the goals are coming from, and then change a role or two to fill up the hole that's causing the goals
They really need to increase the level of punishment when the players are not up to the level of playing these tactics.
Great VDO
Thank you my friend!
Any tips for SWFC as I am doing badly
Hey, the most fun a have în this game îs taking my childhood club which îs Dinamo Bucharest now în the second tier of romanian footbal and the short goal îs get promoted then title and then oh boy the fun begins try to win the champions league and raise the ranking of the league to get champions league group stage direclty. I din this în my fm 20 în took me 4 sesons after my first title win just to qualify for group stage...getting out was a completly different story another 4 years and from then în the next 3 years I managed a quarter final and 2 round of 16. The struggle îs keeping your players, buy cheap sell high and always have a youger better player coming up next. În fm 23 my first save îs atletico Madrid just to get the feeling of the game 5 seasons and 5 title wins and 2 champions league....oshimen îs a GOD, 230 apps 229 goals, also ogegard în a de-mi God, I went like a galactico transfer1 player 100 mil every season and some freetransfer kile guimares, raspadori, Ricci, and a very cheap dybala for 20 mil and now after the update I Will start a new save wiith dinamo and this time win the champions league
@@RapidReload. Osimhen is definitely one of the best strikers in this years game!
Good luck on your next save, you'll get that Champions League no doubt!
this just from my experience but since fm20 amf (in any role other than engance) is just overpower and very hard to deal with
Definitely a great position to introduce in your tactic! What is your favourite role to use in this position?
Based off the info you gathered, what tactic would you build?..
But then with a 523 you will lose the use of Kudus who is a fantastic Shadow Striker
@@danjames2494 that is the eternal struggle of tactics in FM (and also what makes it so fun). If you're set on using him as a shadow striker, I would suggest a 4231 with 2 DMs

There certainly is a large difference between FM and FIFA when it comes to gameplay! Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video!
I am worried, all my formations go against this video😂
No worries my man, these trends are not an absolute must have in your tactics. They are only an indication of what is working for the most OP tactics out there. But if your tactic has a solid tactical foundation, you can defintely make it work!
If you're worried about your own tactic though, check out this video where I run down some of the most common tactical mistakes, and how you can fix them! ua-cam.com/video/dKrcScMTHAw/v-deo.html
So what is the best tactic on your opinion?
I don't know if there is a single "best" tactic, as how well a tactic will perform will depent on the players on your team.
Looking at the OP tactics, a singular "best" tactic would be something along the lines of a 4231 with 2 DM's, with a lot of attacking roles and a high pressing system.
But be sure to analyse your own team, and find what suits your players best!
This work on level 10 none league
While the style of football you're able to play will be very different down in level 10, the majority of these tactical trends will still hold through at that level!
Ferguson TF op tho
Love him on this game!

Leipzig is very exciting team with heaps of potential. Good luck overthrowing Bayern!
there's a lot of tactic not on fm base that are extremely good. i found on fm 22 most the top tactics were rubbish
What I would say is that tactical tastes differ from coach to coach, and how effective a tactic will be will also depend on the players in your team and if they're capable of executing the tactic. You certainly don't have to use these specific tactical trends, but these do seem very powerful. What kind of tactic do you prefer?

tactics like this only works in this game. exploiting game system and what this game favors more. i like realistic tactics more. but not possible with this game. Still it's fun game.
It depends on what you define as "works with this game". I do fully agree that there are tactics and tricks that work better in the game than might be realistic, but any real life tactic that is succesfully translated to the game will work fine as well! That's also the beauty of this game, you can play it however you want.
doesn't fm arena have the most in depth tested tactics?
There are certainly more sites providing valuable tactical databases, FM Arena being one of them! For this video I decided to use FM Base's tactics, but FM Arena is quality as well!
What is op tactic?
Op tactic stands for Overpowered tactic
Is this good for console
As far as I know, there is no difference in tactical effectiveness on console compared to PC. So this should all apply to console as well!
These tactics won't work on lower league beacuse the league lacking of quality posession based player
in fact, narrow diamond are the best performing tactics i have when conquering vanarama north/south and nationals
with DLP as central point. my DLP currenlty have the highest assists when the player have passing long ball trait
Is this post update?
The tactics were based on 23.1.0, but I haven't seen or felt any major changes since the update that would make these OP tactics any less effective. @Charles Black even managed to dominate the Vanarama South using these tactical trends! (Check out his comment)
Meta, meta, and meta. For years we are exploiting match engine instead of playing football. :)
The fun thing is that you can play it however you like! Want to focus on getting the best possible tactic in this match engine? You can! Want to recreate a real life tactic as close as possible? You can! Whatever suits you best is what you should go with
FM Base.... the repository of 1 persons tactics
