Ibis Ripmo Review - 2019 Bible of Bike Tests

  • The Ripmo embodies the term “hover bike.” It floated up rough climbs, indifferent to pedal input. Likewise, it swallowed our chunky descents while still maintaining more pop than a long-travel 29er should. That once niche category is officially ready for the masses.

Having ridden this bike numerous times, (and basically every other bike in the category) I feel like the Ripmo is just about the best "do everything" 29er of 2018. Well done Ibis!

Best money ever spent and would buy it again without even a blink. Ride one and you WILL understand. I'm torn between the Ripley V4 and Ripmo.
I've demo'd the Ripmo but felt it could be a bit more nimble. However, I been riding a V1 Ripley for over 4 years now.
One thing that really stood out on the Ripmo was how it tracked. It just commands this presence when pedaling even on the street!
The "fun factor" is a priority for me. For example the V1 Ripley is crazy fun: nimble, climbs well. Although I wish it was a bit more stable. I heard the V4 is really stable. Hopefully, I'll be able to demo one this weekend.

This bike has excellent geometry, it is very effective pedaling and climbing but downhill it is less effective than other enduro bike in its class. I ride a Rocky Mountain Instinct BC Edition 2018 and the horse link suspension system absorbs shocks better than dw wlink in my opinion. The strength of the dw link is pedaling and climbing. The dw link is too stiff for the descent for my personal taste and my weight of 230 pounds. Having a Fox 36 forks of 160mm forward help but I put a shock Fox X2 instead of the dpx2 for this type of suspention system that would give a better balance for a bike of this category.

Matt, I am certainly no expert, in fact quite a novice but I did recently see a review regarding this question and the general consensus was that the Float 2 takes a little more dialling in but would be the better shock for big downhill bike park/jump rides whereas the DPX 2 gives a more poppy ride, possibly better suited to everyday trail rides.

I demoed the Ripmo with the stock front shock and comparing it to other bikes I demoed I found it did not preform enough low speed dampening. I ended up buying the GX build and upgraded to the Fox Factory fork. I also upgraded the rotors to 200mm and upgraded to SRAM Code R brakes. since the bike comes fully assembled the bike shop (Kirkland Bike Shop) can upgrade you and give you wholesale price for parts you swap out. No extra assembly costs! Very happy with my new bike.

Hi Nicolas, the most all-out XC bike we tested in southwest Utah was the BMC Fourstroke 01 One but we had a short-travel 29 class and a short-travel 27.5 class to catch all bikes that are blurring what constitutes 'XC' and 'trail' these days. You can find all the options here: www.bikemag.com/2019-bible-bike-tests-utah/

These marketing bastards know how to get the gullible 9-5 job-having consumer with nothing to do with their money riled up and emotional to the point where they justify buying the next new thing, "from the moment you step on the pedal, it just shoots you into outerspace" c'mon dude, until the fools who buy it actually do only to realize, they've just fallen victim to the n+1 thing.
euro bikes accelerates fast in their 2.5 width DHF DRII combo now uhn? so, what will you say about XC frames with 2.2 Icons and likes then?
