      Bike Somm Hello mate. Love your video 👌I’m about to order Ripmo 2019, which at my local shop in London this bike is price reduced. Do you think I should go for the 2020 model or stick with 2019 ? Kind regards. Tom

      I know you're asking Bike Somm this question but I just though I would respond a little. Not sure what your budget is. You could save a few and put that into a nicer wheelset, better brakes, or better drivetrain. Or just save period. Look on MTBR in the forums, many guys are putting the WORKS components angleset on their Ripmo v1, which gets it close to the Ripmo 2. You can buy now and be on the trail now. Ripmo v.2 is hard to get right now and being that Ibis has sort of halted production due to covid 19, many are saying July is when Ripmo 2 will be re-shipping out again.

    On the Ripmo Af, Ibis decided to install 170mm cranks. On my medium Af I’ve never had a pedal strike also I’m enjoying the extra 1 degree slacker head tube angle!

      I'm sure it's a great set up for sure. On the v.2 carbon Ripmo, some are going with 165mm cranks too. Pedal strikes can cause a serious crash too.

    Comparing the Ripmo and the Ripley, dies the Ripley climb a lot better than the Ripmo? Trying to find out if it’s worth getting the Ripley even though I already own a Ripmo.

    • @travelthenarrowtrail8660
      @travelthenarrowtrail8660  4 роки тому

      Sorry for responding soooo late! Not sure if you already made your purchase yet. But if you have a Ripmo and you want a close to one bike quiver, I would stay with the Ripmo. You get that bigger travel bike for harder knarlier terrain but yet it climbs so well. No it doesn't climb as well that Ripley, but the Ripley also doesn't handle janky chunk they way the Ripmo can. Let me know what you ended up doing.

      Travel the Narrow Trail, thanks for the answer. I bought a Ripmo over a year ago, but I was thinking of getting a second shorter travel bike like the Ripley.

    Nice review man! I felt like you did a great job covering what people are interested in knowing. I didn't see any medium to large jumpr, or drops, and not high speed rock gardens. Those would be some other things you might consider in the future, to try to get a well rounded review.
    I love my Ripmo. I have been considering the Works angleset as well. One thing of note...where did you set the sag? Surprisingly, most people don't know that Ibis recommends only 15% sag on the rear shock. If you ran a standard 20-30%, that would easily explain the pedal strikes. It would also make the bike even more playful as it stays more in the mid travel on the ride. I have had no issue with pedal strikes, and in fact WAAAY less than with my Transition Patrol.
    Your first graphic says the HTA is 69.5. I know you transposed the numbers, because you got it correct later on. I will add one thing...in the video, I didn't see you smash any rock gardens at high speed. That is a trait where the Ripmo is a little behind some of the other Enduro bike offerings out there. It's not quite as composed, even with the FloatX2 upgrade, as some others in that class. BUT....for my riding preferences, which is an occasional enduro race, but mostly all mountain fun with jumps, drops, and even full days of XC....it truly is by far the closest to a "do it all" bike that I've ridden to date. I feel like the time I might lose slowing slightly for the rock gardens will be made up in the pedaling parts.
    As for the camera, it worked well in this setting....WAY better than the 7 for stability on the chesty. I still prefer the chin mounted 7 for the better audio, and how it tracks the riders head and eyes, but it was pleasing to watch on those trails...so good job. I would say that you didn't have a lot of up and down motion with changes in overall body position, or a lot of tight turns at speed. That is where the chesty without a gimbal starts to make me a little queasy....body roll, that the gimbal would normally correct for. I think the Hero 8 chest mounted will likely become the "go to" camera, for simplicity, but I still like the chin mounted view. Most people just aren't wiling to wear full face all the time, or look that weird. :-)

      Thank you for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. Yes, the sag was at 30%, its where the shop said it should be. Makes me wonder sometimes about shops, you would think they would know what you said that Ibis recommends 15%.
      I dropped air out of it to reach 20%. I would also agree, the rock gardens I should have bombed down but some of the short ones I did, it was evident to me that the suspension gets kicked around more. I though the X2 might fix that or something from DVO.
      For 145mm it wasn't too forgiving on the rockgardens but that may be why it is so poppy and playful. If they could just get it a little more plush in rear over rocky sections. Its been the funnest bike I have been on in all facets: climbing, flats, downs, etc. I never thought I could have fun in the climbs but the Ripmo changed all that. Ride on...

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 5 років тому +2

      @@travelthenarrowtrail8660 ... The FloatX2 does help some with the rock gardens, because you can tune it a little more with the high speed compression. That definitely helps.
      The things you mentioned, generally speaking, are all characteristics of the DW Link suspension. It's just not as plush as some other designs, but it's what makes the bike so lively, and makes it climb so well.
      I have a buddy who has the FloatX2, and the Push spring upgrade to the fork. His bike rides noticeably more plush than mine, and still maintains a very good pedal platform. The small bump compliance is better, and it handles the high speed hits with more composure. So...there are definitely ways to improve the performance of the bike.
      The one thing about the DPX2 is that the bike rides a little higher in the travel, and it ramps up quicker. The bike feels more lively with the DPX2. The carbon version's linkage creates a leverage curve that is not conducive to using a coil, because it's too linear....not enough ramp up. The FloatX2 has that same issue to some extent, and there's no way to custom valve it.
      The new AF version has a minor change to the linkage, so it ramps up quicker and will allow for a coil. It's also a degree slacker. So...basically, it has the improvements that the Ripmo carbon riders I know would like their bikes to have. My guess is that we will see the next carbon iteration address those two minor issues, which will make the bike even that much more capable.
      Even with those two minor things, it's still the best all around bike I've ever ridden. Hands down.

      Travel the Narrow Trail ...15% is right in their manual.

    • @travelthenarrowtrail8660
      @travelthenarrowtrail8660  5 років тому

      @@willbros1499 I agree with you, the new Ripmo, whenever that is, will probably be slacker and similar to the AF.
      I noticed the new Hightower is better on small bumps and massive chunk. While it does climb better than the previous Hightower, much better, it's not as punchy forward surging as the Ripmo in the climbs. It's also not as poppy either.
      The only bike I have been on that is close is the Reval Rascal. I'll be doing a review video on that in a few weeks probably.

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 5 років тому

      @@travelthenarrowtrail8660 ... I"ll be interested to see that. Chris Canfield is actually living here in Bentonville right now, and Dave Neal...the owner of Mojo Cycling, is going to have a dinner soon for some of us to attend, and discuss the Revel. He designed the rear suspension, as I'm sure you already know. We have historically had a LOT of Canfield riders here locally (still have a few), and I already know of a few who are excited about getting the chance to ride a Revel, and one who is already ready to buy one without even riding it, because he's loved Canfield for so long. He's owned a few Jedi's, and a Balance in the past.
      If that bike pedals close to the Ripmo, but soaks things up a little more on the descents...it's going to be a winner for sure!

    Great review, II'm really mpressed with mine too.
    38 LBs for a GX build seams too light?
    My brand new blue
    Ripmo large
    no tool kit,
    carbon wheels 32 ID, nova tech 791/792 hub 28 spoke brass nipples , light weight sapan bladed spokes, aluminum stems
    Carbon one up bars, forged 50mm stem
    Carbon dropper post 450 gram, about 200 grams lighter than what it came with
    carbon 110 gram seat
    carbon bottle cage
    30T wolf tooth chainring
    carbon Next 2 , 170mm cranks, with One up flat nylon pedals
    XTR 12 spd cassette
    standard 2- 2.5 Assagai's , tubeless 6-7 oz of stans for both
    Same shimano 4 piston brakes with 200mm sram rotors
    Titanium bolts on everything
    38mm diamond 160mm fork, with bolt on fender
    Fox X2 shock
    weighs right at 32LBS with a digital bike scale
    I know my suspension adds weight, and your rear tire is probably 100 grams lighter, but thats about 4 pounds difference.
    Any idea's

    • @travelthenarrowtrail8660
      @travelthenarrowtrail8660  2 роки тому

      Thats a light dropper post. Well, if you wanted to shed weight, here is how I did it on my Ripmo v2 in Large and its a touch under 29 pounds.
      I'll be dropping my new video on my new Ripmo in blue soon, so watch for that. Anyway, here is what I did.
      I know Rockshox Lyrik at 160 weighs in much less than the DVO diamond. My drivetrain, the whole thing is XTR 12sp. Sounds like you only run XTR cassette.
      I also run EE wings cranks at 170mm. Industry 9 aluminum wheels. DVO rear shock, much lighter than the X2. Rotors are 200f and 180mm in rear. Shimano XTR 4 piston brakes, not sure which shimano brakes you have.
      Also I run a Dissector in rear, 2.4. I run an Assegai 2.5 in front. Assegai front and rear is over kill. Switch the rear to a Dissector or an Aggressor in rear and it will become a new bike. Tires can make a huge difference. I'm now running WTB Vigilante 2.5 and a 2.4 Trail boss on my new build.
      This was my set up on my old large build ripmo.
