- Mario Bros. Wonder single-handedly makes the case that 2D Mario shouldn't be relegated to second-tier status in the modern Mario canon.
Whether Nintendo intended it or not, conventional wisdom tends to sort modern Mario games into something of a mental tier list. The 3D Mario games like Galaxy and Odyssey are the flagship mascot platformers, and 2D Mario games like the New Super Mario Bros. series are somewhat lesser retro throwbacks. Still good, dependable, but less prestigious. It's after years of 2D games languishing in understudy status that Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes center stage--and it delivers such a knockout performance that it makes the argument, implicit or otherwise, that 2D Mario games can be just as vital to the medium as their 3D siblings.

This feels like the first true post Super Mario World 2D Mario game that is finally able to escape from the comparisons of its predecessors and actually dared to not be a successor but actually evolve. In turn, they ended up creating another genre defining game like that 1990 classic.
New super mario ds was as revolutionary as wonder, but the following games were just the same só we feel like ds is the same as them so its not revolutionary, but it is not true
This game makes you FEEL like Mario... It has a little something for everyone.
@@albertooliveira4227yeah I totally agree with this! That “New Super Mario” game on the DS was the last time I can recall being truly satisfied playing a 2-D Mario game and feeling like it was moving in a new direction.
But then it’s honestly felt like every subsequent “traditional” Mario platformer since then has been some lesser clone of that game.
Bruh it hurts having all consoles. This game and Spider-Man 2 is gonna hurt my wallet but it will be worth it!

Finally at a point where I’m fortunate enough to have all consoles and a decent PC but now its a time issue due to professional commitments as well as social and family commitments. I almost miss having one console and all the time in the world haha
I was thinking the same thing. Between this and Spider-Man 2. Ouch! But so worth it!

I was already planning on getting this when I heard they were doing a new Mario game because I figured it’d be fun regardless. The first trailer blew me away, and this review makes it look like it lives up to expectations. Can’t wait!!
At least you didn't complain that it wasn't a new 3D Mario like IGN did.

They didn't complain... And they gave it the same score. I swear people just find a reason to bring up IGN & complain no matter the situation...
There is a good deal of attention in this review to what has been only loosely brushed on until now. The badges/course types, and how the multiplayer online is varied and can flavor up your experience. I still wish you could jump into the same course and not be shadows, but the other examples for standees as hints or seeing people dash about is cool.
I had already settled on playing this lights out, no features, but I may check it out or do it on a repeat playthrough.
A 9 from Gamespot is actually a 10 somewhere else. Amazing game

It is resplendent, it feels like a proper sequel to Super Mario World.
imo it doesnt feel like super mario world but its not a bad game there are somethings if I was a kid I know I would love but theres something missing about some of these stages id probably give it an 8. Its very easy but I know why they want very small children to play this but even the 5 stars difficulty are not that hard.

@@DistinctionDinothat’s good that it doesn’t feel like super Mario world, the original Mario series always innovated up until the New Soup series which felt soulless by comparison. This is the first 2D Mario sequel that feels fresh since Super Mario World.
Mario Maker is great as well but I consider it more of a spinoff and it is built on reused assets from past titles.

SMW was the very first game I have played at age 3 and forever my favorite. Having completed much of Wonder, I can vouch that it is absolutely so. Especially in movement and visual identity.

Ooh, finally -- a proper sequel to Super Mario World. That game is a tough act to follow so im glad Wonder was able to get back to the high creativity 2D glory days. I haven't played any 3D Mario games because it doesn't interest me enough as a proper 2D one. Game of the Year nominee right here for me.
Unfortunately it doesnt hold a candle to mario world. Music is bland and no real yoshi gameplay. Alot of lacking things in this game but its really fun

Hopefully we can get something similar for Star Fox, we haven't had a true evolution of Star Fox 64 really. I would love a more modern take on Star Fox to be taken into consideration by Nintendo and make a game that not only has more playtime but is richer in story and maybe has something like arwing customization? Maybe center the game around a campaign with added gameplay styles for flavor like the early ratchet and clank titles and some more advanced multiplayer like the game Strike Vector.

I love how this game is playable for both kids and parents together. If there is a bit that my 7 year old is getting frustrated by I hop in as Yoshi and let her hop on my back letting her do the attacking and coin grabbing. The special world challenges are hard as nails but don't have to be completed giving dad a nice late night challenge.
Good review, but why is it now that Gamespot reviews are mostly narrated by people that didn’t review them? It’s just strange.
I love this game. It breathes new life into 2D gaming. It is like Yoshi's Island.
Super Mario World came 21 November 1990... That's 33 years to make a true successor
The new abilities remind me a lot of Rayman Origins
It would sick if they added Cappy and FLUDD to the game as DLC badges. I mean they already have a water mechanic with elephant and then with cappy you could use it like the bubble mechanic and also take over enemies 🙏🏼

I have been trying it and it’s so good. It feels way better than any previous 2D Mario games to date.
just got it. its gift wrapped in my drawer waiting for christmas where my daughters will hopefully be delighted. I can't wait to play.

My son and I just started this game and it is really fun. I feels fresh and new yet nostalgic
I wished each character was already equipped with a badge that represents the characters from Mario 2 that can be swapped with something else so they are still equal in gameplay.
If its a mainline Mario game, its going to be great.

I've played Super Mario Bros since the beginning yesterday, Super Mario nowadays is very different.
Never had more fun playing a mario game since super mario world in the 90s. This new sidescroller imo is > than every third person mario game.

Personally, ‘flattening’ character abilities was a welcome return to the mechanics and feel of SMW. It’s one of the things I like about CTR. I can keep my aesthetic and statistical choices separate. There’s something to be said for the opposite, too. My fine-tuning in Mario Kart 8 leads to some hilarious and bizarre builds.

Wonder. Odyssey is mostly a single player experience.

This game was fun. Best 2d Mario to date. Very difficult levels that I almost rage quit over. Lol but what Mario game doesn't do that? Still think Mario Odyssey is the best Mario game to date.

Wait, why does the review start out comparing 3D and 2D Mario games? He starts trashing recent 2D entries before somehow being amazed that “2D Mario games can be just as vital to the medium as their 3D siblings.” Bruh?! You are comparing apples to oranges. In this case, adding another axis of movement to a Mario game both changes its genre somehow reveals your bias against their 2D counterparts.

honestly, I never liked any of the 3D mario games. I don't know why, maybe because of DOOM and Unreal setting my expectations or maybe it's because nostalgia from the 80's that I can't get past. I'm just glad to see 2D platforming getting some attention again. Whatever the case, Wonder is a great game and I'm hooked.

As a person who has played both, I have never found as much joy playing starfield as I have for this game. Starfield feels like a complicated checklist, this feels like it was made for fun. But to each their own I suppose

My kids have been eagerly awaiting this game since its preview. Nintendo struck a grand slam on this gem for its true target audience.... the kids. As a Nintendo kid myself during the 80's it'll be a exciting "blockbuster" evening grabbing the popcorn and watching the kids play. 🎉

You can still have fluttering luigi if you use the high jump badge, tho i think the characters being the same is a good change

Right like what was the-1 for? They didn't give a sucker negative besides the lacking of the reason behind why they had to do the skins the way they did with the characters cuz it's so online they didn't want it to be not fun if say 1 characters were way popular and the others weren't then everyone would always pick the toad 😂 so they had to j use the badge system which not only innovates and doesn't matter how u look but makes it so everyone can choose they own ability without it being locked out I see it as a positive that keeps the game going on an online world maybe playing it as solo expected to get a different experience but it not like they can't still do that just now by choice of badge so idk if it is even a negative my only gripe is 60 bucks man in this economy lol
