Too bad you showed up after Cybershell died, lmao. BTW big Archie Sonic fan. Your work at IDW never captured my interest in the same way but keep it up.
My favorite part of the early Sonic Comics were small little boxes in the corners of the front page, with my favorite one being Robotnik in the corner box and saying "Today the corner box, and tomorrow the world!"
You missed the 'best' detail in Sonic Live!: They were too cheap to buy and too lazy to borrow a Genesis, so there's no console in any of the photos and indeed the 'controller' the boy is using is obviously a TV remote turned sideways.
Taken from a tweet he wrote around a year ago as of now, "The photos used to create that cover were the result of last minute improvisation when the original was rejected as the original TV used was deemed too “dated” by the suits. I had just moved and didn’t have access to the gaming console & controllers. You work with what you have." idk i thought it was kind of interesting though it's really funny that he's still bitching about these types of things on social media
Well, there's a few other "professional artists/writers" that might give you a similar feeling of disgust but you really have to trawl the internet's favorite dumping grounds to find their works these days. Turns out it's hard to keep a job you suck at.
@The Last Thing You See Before You Die Man, you're not gonna like this but... I think you should know. If you take a look down past your ankles, you'll find something that may disturb you. I don't know how you're going to live with yourself knowing this, but surely it's better than not knowing.
I drew that Sonic CD picture in the Sonic Live issue. I was like 16 at the time. They also messed up and put & Kitty beside my name, probably cuz I had my middle name spelt in Japanese.
Cybershell thanx for the video, I been collecting since issue 0 and the past 2yrs I've barely read them even tho I always bought them. I had wondered why I hadn't noticed any new issues in my subscriptions from my comic store.
@@koolbelzero116 Okay, okay, allow me to explain. The joke is supposed to imply, with satire and a little bit of deceptive truth, that Tails could have potentially reenacted the events of what happened on the assassination of president John F. Kennedy, which involved him being taken down with one cruel shot from a rifle. This is similar to what could have happened as seen in the comic (and in the video, of which you may have to find for yourself, as I only have time to explain the general joke itself), where Tails holds up a rifle and has it's crosshairs targeting Robotnik's back, which although is not his head (as was the case of JFK's assassination), can be ridiculously compared to the events of when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. There, I saved you a few hours from history class right now.
I remember going to an antique shop with my grandparents and mom when I was 14. I was a huge Sonic fan, but never knew about the comics. Then I discovered a stack of about 50 of these for 10 bucks. My mom got them and I read and reread them religiously that year - it helped me get through the awkward age of 14 and I'll love these comics forever for that.
"Pay attention to Ian Flynn" and "pay attention to Tyson Hesse" one's written the story for Sonic Frontiers and the other's been hired as character design lead for the Sonic movies. We're lucky to have them.
That's why I will never watch my old loreless shows again, making your own or looking at made by me is a waste. I can't type something that don't sound improper. I stink at long stories
The main thing I hate about the comic getting cancelled is that the spinoff comic Sonic Mega Drive with art by Tyson Hesse will never be finished. It was great, best thing out of the Sonic Archie comics in ages.
DiddlyDiPotatoes honestly I only disliked a few things of the series, one being Archie's inserted characters and probably off personality of the actual characters from sega, fleetway was more of the disturbed and cruel version of sonic. I especially hated the future comics as in making sonic have kids, having him marry the comic series Mary Sue. It just seemed off, however the team tango comics were my favorite.
AnonimATA no, Evan Stanley created ghosts of the future. The only connection to the games Evan has is that she appeared in one of the Sonic and the Black Knight fan gallery.
"Last night I dreamt I was engaged to a red echidna named--" "Knuckles?" "Yes how did you know?" "I had the same dream" I know it's not what they meant but I just fucking laughed out loud at the idea of Sonic having a dream where he marries Knuckles
I still love archie silvers story; he searches traitor who destroyed freedom fighters for his whole life.he finally finds it and goes back in time to tell sonic, sonic beats him up and tells "traitor"(antonie) sacrificed his life to save king and quenn from eggmans lazer.thus disambbling freedom fighters
The Ian Flynn run was probably the best the Archie comic got. Ken Penders had his moments when he wasn't being creepy, weird, or egotistical, but it was usually either him or Karl Bollers responsible for some of the worst story stuff to happen in the comic. The first year or two solid of Flynn's run on the comic was basically cleaning up the Penders/Bollers mess. And actually managing not to let Sega's increased meddling and increasingly oppressive mandate from ruining the comic. Ultimately it was Penders' lawsuit that killed the comic, since it was basically that and Archie's own financial woes that got the comic ended. I haven't ready much of the IDW comic yet, but I hear Flynn did a phenomenal job getting its lore up and going before he departed *that* comic. I'm always delighted when I hear how pissed off Ken Penders is that he's pretty much blacklisted from the industry and very few people give a crap about his attempt to continue his awful Lara-Su comic since he doesn't even have the Sonic license to base his work on anymore.
31:30 Even with Ken's career completely dead, there will always be such emblematic and genre defining characters such as Dominatrix Knuckles, Gay Knuckles, Douchebag Knuckles, Iron Plate Knuckles, Super Knuckle Bros 1 and 2, Girl Knuckles, College Professor Knuckles, Monocle Knuckles and _the_ most iconic, nay, humanity defining of all, Red Sonic.
And now that Frontiers is out, Ian Flynn's first game endeavor is basically cleaning up the entire mess that the post-Colors writing team had made. Oh, fate.
With it's high and low points, the Sonic Archie comic was great while it lasted, and it's a real shame to see it go. To be fair though, it wasn't just Ken Penders alone that killed the comic (as most have been led to believe), because Sega themselves had an hand in it's slow demise as well. You see, over time, Sega continuously passed notes down as to what could and couldn't be done. They were very restrictive as to how the official characters were depicted, and tried as hard to make the comics more and more like the games in tone and style while removing creative control from the writers. Not to mention Sega slowly destroyed the comic's roots and intended on erasing any connection to the SatAM cartoon completely because it didn't fit their vision of the franchise, a trend which was amplified tenfold after the Super Genesis Wave event. This was combined with a massive decline in sales after the reboot, as well as internal politics on Archie's side of things in the fact that they too wanted to get rid of the comic along with Sega, especially since Archie wanted to focus more on their homegrown titles, much like Marvel did in the 90's when they sold off their comic licenses to other companies. So when you really narrow things down, the Archie comic had everything going against it, so there's not simply one source for the cause of the comic's demise, but several different factors that contributed to it.
Archie isn't a victim here. They lost the license because years of corporate shenanigans and mishandling of assets has left them nearly bankrupt, so they can't afford it. SEGA tightening the leash on Sonic is them finally pulling up their pants and taking back control of their legal property after years of letting it grow like a garden weed.
Two issues I'LL never forget are Issues 175 and 200. The former in a nutshell, Dr. Eggman wins. He just straight up wins. He ambushed Knothole, destroys EVERYTHING and Snively captures everyone but Sonic(and Tails, Knuckles, and Amy) so that Eggman can defeat him personally, and he does. Sonic gets straight up thrashed, and even pulling off one of his most impressive speed feats ever, complete with a badass line(Limit!? I'VE GOT YOUR LIMIT RIGHT HERE!) he still gets knocked into the dirt. The latter is actually the first Sonic Comic I ever read(not counting the one in Mega Collection plus), and it's glorious. In the aftermath of 175, the following issues had sonic and company make the biggest comeback yet, and when Eggman was defeated after Sonic recovered from his brutal ass-kicking, he slowly started descending into madness, and his constant strings of defeat weren't helping. When Sonic beat him in THIS issue, bringing their war to an end, the Eggman cracks and he has a mental breakdown and the issue ends with Eggman in a straightjacket.
sonicsaiyan07 I love those so much, they're so well done. 200 is brilliant because that is the logical "end" for Robotnik: after giving his all in the fight against Sonic and losing every time, he's just gone.
@Oshabot 16 Please shut the fuck up and let people enjoy their games. This old TF2 and Overwatch war is already over. And I'm sorry if you were joking I can't really tell.
Such a damn shame, really. The Archie Sonic Comics are what pretty much inspired me to begin drawing and creating characters, all the way back when I got my first issue - Issue #173 - from my grandmother after she saw it at a yard sale. I remember kinda drifting away from the Sonic franchise as a whole two or three years ago, but I still have all the comics I collected over the years. Seeing this news really just hurts.
Jordan Ulrich Same here. I had the Sonic Mega Collection and no cable growing up, and I'd play the games for a few hours since I couldn't watch TV. When games got boring, and when I ran out of DVDs, I'd open the comic menu and redraw the covers on a page and use the controls to zoom in/out for the smaller details. I didn't draw Sonic OCs or fan art or anything cringy, but it got me to learn how to draw.
Do you ever think Sonic just ever thinks "Man, I miss old Robotnik?". I think that should've been touched up on in the comics. A reflection on the different relationships between Robotniks and Sonic. It just feels so weird that Robo Robotnik integrated himself so well into continuity and he's just sort of a carbon copy of Robotnik.
They bring that up a little bit after the whole Scourge thing gets resolved and there was a issue at one point when the old robotnick came back and was a good guy for a little bit.
RaggedViking, when was this? In the new continuity, this doesn't seem to matter because only one Eggman has existed (ignoring Nega and family members) and only Nicole can remember pre-Super Genesis Wave events.
Even if IDW does pick up the comic, there's no guarantee the FF will come back, esp. considering the fact that Ian Flynn had to fight Sega to keep the Freedom Fighters in the series after the reboot I think our Sonic SatAM crew is officially dead..... :'/
As much as i love the Freedom Fighters, the less characters, the better! The comic book was ballsy as shit when i read a random issue, like, why the flying fug is Shadow king? and more.
I vividly remember Reading one of the Issues where it was a filler issue. I remember the plot being that The freedom fighters (Except Sonic) Had some Robotniks McDonalds style fast food, then they got sick. thus sonic had to go INSIDE them to fight off the illness for them. is was fucking bizzare.
Hell yeah it did. While some of it was interesting, like Mobius being a post apocalyptic Earth, other parts got me scratching my head. For example, the plot to frame Sonic in Endgame had to be one of the most convoluted plots I've ever seen done by Robotnik/Eggman. I'm aware Sonic Heroes hadn't been made yet, but it would've been much simpler if Metal Sonic had been brought back as the one framing Sonic.
"Overly long rambling"? Nonsense, you really went in-depth about some of the issues, and you are still internet comedy gold. I love your content, so keep it up.
Me: *Please don´t talk about Ken Penders, please ignore that please please please* -Ken Penders and the Lara Su Chronicles *Oh boy... at least he might not know that Ken did the sonic live-* -Sonic Live is... *Crap...*
Fun Fact: The Endgame Saga was originally going to be the End of the Comics, and according to Ian Flynn Part 4 of Endgame was going to be twice as big.
Even bigger than the Director Cut Super Special? Also more fun facts: Penders really intended for Princess Sally to legit die in issue 47. He thought that she wasn't a popular or well loved character since the Sally mini-series he wrote bombed (though this is apparently due to the fact that there was little marketing or build-up for the mini-series & the young boys of the time most likely turned their noses up at it). So he wanted to get rid of her for good but fan backlash over the next two issue pleading for her return saved the character. Why was Penders allowed so much creative power? Well even more fun facts: Archie needed to see some serious uptake in sales otherwise they were cancelling the comic. Most of the staff didn't even think they'd reach a 50th issue. Penders had written a few hits himself & his Knuckles series was very well received. So when he proposed he had a big idea in store to really knock one out of the park, they let him take the wheel.
I dunno, I walked right to my comic book store in Flint (Amazing Book Store) when I was 15 at the time and bought the first issue of Princess Sally in front of a few other people. I never really cared what people seeing the things I buy. Unfortuinately, those comics and my 1-200 and every mini-series released up to 2004 got destroyed in a fire and I stopped reading/buying the comic. :/
Mom's attic (all were in sleeves and in proper comic storage containers) from 2004-2014 and yes the house was but that doesn't mean you get the comics back.
Wow! You know, I always hated the Genesis Wave. I just couldn't undrestand what the fuck Archie Comics would want to reset everything, after they when through all that work, developing the character's personalities and and relation ships... Now I know the REAL reason why!... This Ken Penders should be lynched by his BALLS!
Well lucky for you the Genesis wave didn't actually happen. If the comics are cancelled anything that was the result of executive meddling and not because they wanted to didn't actually happen and the last issue that actually happened in the timeline was before the Mecha Sally ones. Either way Death of the Author because God would never allow that to happen so if the "reboot" happened at all it happened in an alternate universe where the characters only think it happened because of time travel shenanigans. It's bad writing anyway as they'd never accept it and would make sure to fight to reverse it if it actually did and they are wrong if they think they'd actually forget them (and messed up in the head if they think that's okay to put in there) so the main Sonic from the comics is still living in Knothole with Sally, Julie Su, Saffron, all of Knuckle's people, and all the other people living happily now that Eggman universe hopped and is fighting the new comics characters. Ian Flynn's word on the matter is irrelevant to what really happened because it's out of his hands.
It was a combination of Penders and Sega. In addition to having to get rid of Penders created characters Sega laid down a ton of VERY strict mandates so that a lawsuit wouldn't happen again.
It's a two piece blow. Ken Penders messed up the Archie half of the series while Sega cracked down on creativity and licensing. I feel as if the Worlds Collide mini-series drew the eye of Sega and that was the worst thing for the comic series. I just hope that after the comic series ended, I hope the SatAM crew still appears in some Sonic media. Just not fade away like Mighty, Ray & Nack the Weasel.
Indeed. I think the Penders lawsuit reminded Sega that the comic existed and once the license was up for renewal they decided it was not worth keeping because it opened them to the possibility of lawsuits for rights to characters they did not care about.
I will always grieve the loss of the fantastic backgrounds the comics gave to Espio and Silver. 😢 Silver's story didn't even get resolved in the end. It's just tragic.
Most excellent retrospective Sir, Living in the UK I never read any of the Archie comics, so this was a great piece for me :) Oh, if you want to know how messed up the Fleetway Sonic gets, may I recommend a UA-cam channel by the name of "SJ Webster" He's covered them really well.
Didn't expect to find you here. XD I just saw a video about a comic I haven't read in years by a username I recognized from nearly a decade back and clicked on it.
Not only one the longest-running comic series based on a videogame character, but also one of the best in general. Even if I didn't read much of it, I'm entirely sad to see it go. R.I.P. Comic Sonic. Also, screw Ken Penders, that slimy, talentless hack.
man. my interest in the comic started waning after #50, i'd pick up an issue sporadically and then be all confused and shit. that endgame arc fucked me up as a kid tho, like damn. i think i've still got all my comics laying around somewhere, actually...
I want them to release all the comics in big easy to manage books. They had a few last time I looked but vast quantities were missing. I'll assume that they didn't expect me to maintain a subscription for the last 25 years to get them all.
Comixology is probably the best place to go if you want to read the whole series (legally). You can purchase all of the issues digitally there. However if you want physical books your stuck with the archives series which collected 4 issues at a time and isn't even close to being caught up, collections of stories that aren't in order, the graphic novels for universe and post universe reset sonic comics, and a scavenger hunt for back issues.
Yotsuba You know what will be really cool? If they can't fit the Sonic Comic books in one book make a small gaint collection that sums up everything. Maybe like one of those books that if you collect them all and put them in order side by side, it will make a awesome picture of Sonic or something.
Honestly, I really loved the fact that the Archie series had its own canon and world separate from the games. I mean why would I want to read a comic version of a game's story when I could just play it? I liked that the series had its own unique flavor of storytelling that you just couldn't get in your average Sonic game. I get that seeing lots of comic-exclusive characters would probably be a turn-off to a lot of game fans. I really get it. But to me, having those characters didn't turn me off of it- it actually did the opposite! It intrigued me even more as I wanted to find out just who they were and how they fit in with the game characters. I'll explain. My first issue was #140, Return to Angel Island Part 3. As you can probably imagine, I opened it up and saw like 20 characters I had never seen before and knew nothing about. Knuckles had a family?! What was going on here?! What's the Dark Legion?! Who's General Kage?! I see Eggman, but who's that weird lady right next to him?! And who's this "Hunter" guy at the end!? However, instead of being turned-off by all the unfamiliarity... I was actually quite intrigued by it! I wanted to know what was going on and who those unfamiliar characters were. I can see how it would be a turn-off to many people, but I really was on board with it. I felt like this new and unexplored universe was like a birthday present that I could slowly unwrap as the issues went on, deciphering the chronology of events and figuring out just who all of these unfamiliar characters were and how they related to each other. So yeah, I guess I had a pretty different reaction to reading the comic as a lot of other Sonic fans did.
I mean, when you're making an adaptation of something, I think it's best to take ideas from that thing and make something new out of it rather than just copying what already exists
When I first read the comics, I had only ever played sonic colors which only has sonic and tails, so I didn't even know that all those people weren't in the games and I was slightly disappointed when I found out that they weren't.
When I first discovered Archie, I had already watched all the Sonic cartoons through DVDs. At the time, I didn't know there was a comic, so imagine my surprise when I saw an issue in stores with Amy and Sally on the cover. I had always wished all the Sonic continuities were just smooshed into one, big series, so Archie was near-perfect for me.
Unlike Mega Man, Sonic is an active properly, and Sega seems to be doing right by Sonic lately. Someone will pick up the license eventually. As much as it saddens me to see this go, and that it didn't get a proper ending, I am excited to see a potential fresh start for this series.
@voidmaster45 Fingers crossed they give it to IDW and let them either continue on or hopefully another soft reboot with the characters intact (and less stupid mandates from Sega) and given to a team who'll treat the property like gold.
Super Sonic wasn't technically evil, just completely out of control and thus incredibly dangerous. When playing Sonic 2 to get ideas, the writers were surprised by just how out of control he felt compared to normal Sonic (which is kinda true, his increased speed and jump means Super Sonic can be pretty wild at times) so they incorporated that into the character. Fleetway Super Sonic is quite literally a demon of chaos, so it's quite fitting. It's also considerably more interesting than just a regular powered-up Sonic.
The irony here is that, if you take copyright and fair use laws into account, things would have worked out much better for both Archie AND Penders if he'd never gotten the job there to begin with. He could have made his crappy Lara-Su stuff unimpeded (and much sooner) since original characters can't be claimed by Sega or Archie's copyright, and Archie wouldn't have been forced to reboot the whole mythos in his absence. So in retrospect, one SINGLE act of nepotism screwed this whole comic over.
What a fucking shame. The Sonic comics and the Saturday Morning Cartoon were some of the best aspects of the franchise. I was always annoyed they didn't make any games based on them. Princess Sally is the original waifu.
Well, they started to like 4 times, but...bullshit happened that could have totally been avoided and it was all canned. The closest we got to anything was Sonic Spinball and Knuckles Chaotix, the latter which was retconned so hard that they won't even re-release it on any virtual consoles or Sonic collections today.
125 was actually the point when an evil alien race I forgot the name of was trying to wipe the world off the face of the galaxy, and Sonic wound up powering a warp-weapon to use against them by running really fast. The story ended with Sonic being warped to the galaxy that the alien race came from after the weapon successfully worked, and the next bunch of issues revolved around him finding a way back home.
I remember that now they ended up trying to marrying her to antoine who ended up being anti antoine. Its been a while but at one point in my life I read every issue of sonic I stopped after the mega man crossover and they rebooted everything because of penders lawsuit. I hated it because all those storylines, characters, and character development got thrown out the window to never be seen again.
Selfish is a relative word compared to a kid who spends his days focusing on bashing in an already broken doctor's head, and ran around Mobius for a living.
The Mecha Madness arc was honestly one of my favorite comics as a kid. The art was killer in the special issue itself. Like you I stopped reading around the time of the Sonic Adventure adaptation. Spaz's art was the best. I always looked forward to his covers and when he did the inner art it was always incredible.
There was a period of time in the Sonic comics where the story arcs were significantly better than what Sega put into the Sonic Adventure series. If Sonic Adventure had kept the tone and pacing of those comics and the good animated series, Sonic Adventure and beyond probably would have been much better. That's my own preference though and if people are happy with what is out nowadays then that's cool. I just remember in the 90's how I kept wanting the games to actually build upon what was established in the show and the comics when the writing was actually getting better. Spaz's artwork had me hoping that the tone of the series would build on that.
Can we talk about how weird this comic was? Like I love it, I own quite a bit, but it got so... off. I remember when Tails fought Sonic because sonic dated his ex or something, and like... what?
The thing was Tails was in love with the Fiona that was a robot, and that he thought that the real Fiona would have those same feelings for him, but she had no interest in being his girlfriend. Tails still was in love with Fiona though, and got very angry and upset with Sonic when he went with her. Even when Fiona dumped Sonic for his evil counterpart Scourge, Tails was still furious with Sonic, and it shown when Sonic almost went alone again to fight Eggman when he trapped everyone in his Egg Grapes. The thing with Tails' parents got him completely fed up with Sonic and made the fight happen, but the main cause of the fight was because Sonic went with Fiona.
I'd highly recommend reading more of the comic, personally. I've only read up on everything post-retcon (which is actually triggered in the first Megaman/Sonic crossover, which I would ALSO highly recommend) but everything post-retcon felt like some of the best written sonic stuff I've ever looked at. Sonic Universe is even better to be honest, just because the main comic mostly stuck to the game storylines and Universe had the chance for some completely new stuff (like a Shadow vs Knuckles issue) but you really need to read the mainline comic to understand most of what's going on, and sometimes visa-versa. I read them both in tandem, switching over whenever it felt like one was moving ahead of the other chronologically, or when I hit something that confused me and looked like Sonic Universe would explain. Maybe that's not the best way to do it, I dunno. Like, this comic got me to genuinely care and be interested in a character named Eclipse the Darkling. This shit is good. Of course, with the cancellation there's no real ending. It kinda just... takes a break in the middle of everything for the Megadrive specials and then stops dead, which... is pretty sad.
Oh my god it’s now hitting me hard that there isn’t going to be an ending to this. Did they ever finish the second mega man cross over? PLEASE TELL ME THEY DID. I want to see STICKS lead the goddamn STREET FIGHTERS.
Well I was very sad on the verge of crying and felt like absolute garbage when I saw the thumbnail for this video and just started laughing hysterically so thanks for that cybershell
actually, he might. this is sorta hard to explain, but there was an issue where sonic encountered his own fan club. they were sonic look alikes, and most prominently, they wore a medallion of sonic's head. sound familiar? so did chris chan, but his was of sonichu. oddly, these are the kinds of epiphanies that can occur with reading the sonic comic while drinking.
In Penders' defence, he was the one who set the comics on the right tracks (less Adventures, more SatAM) and even though I definitely preffered the Flynn era, and Penders' works did sometimes get a little convaluted and silly, I still really liked the stuff he did. He made some really good stories and great characters that Flynn was then able to work off, so without Penders we may not have had the comics that we have today, for better or worse. That said, he is an absolute asshat who just couldn't let things go and had to destroy what was easily one of the greatest series of all time - and didn't even allow them to conclude all the stuff that was going on, either! So yeah, I respect what he did for the comics, but hate the dude as a person.
Ken Penders is by far an expert, no, THE expert at murdering comic series. Do not ever let him have a job at your comic company. When you fire him, he will reap his vengeance and destroy everything you worked up for so many issues, and not to mention consume and destroy the childhoods, innocence and/or eyesight of all your beloved readers
nicholas buer That is exactly why me and others are banding together to protect the Sonic comics. You can help too, by signing this petition here. www.ipetitions.com/petition/project-all-freedom
+Dcfan200 trying isnt the issue. Its bc they usually dont work. Either the thing tht ppl petition for was already in the works even b4 they started it (like for example Operation: MoonFall; They wanted a Majoras Mask remake but Nintendo was already working on it right when Ocarina of Time finished. So it was a waste of time) or companies say "we hear ur support" but never do it anyways. Only occasionally hav I seen them work.
Man, having you go over those old issues really brought the nostalgia. I remembered all the ones you covered. Issue 19 is one of my favs too. Odd that you said you barely remembered what happened in issue 125, when it was one of the most memorable things to me. Revealing that Mobius is Earth in the future, Mobians have human DNA, and this was all cause of some aliens. Then Sonic runs around some dial, blows it up, then gets flung into space. It's the last story-line I really remember, since it got more confusing then a soap opera.
This explains why Issue 291 never hit stores. I prepaid for it back in January before it was supposed to be released, then it was pushed back to February, and then April, and then canceled. It sucks this happened, especially because I was just starting to get into the comics. Now though? I dunno. "Indefinite hiatus" is just a fancy way to say canceled.
The Sonic Comics were absolutely batshit insane. Disappointed you never mentioned the Xorda, buff Tails, or the time they made an even edgier version of Shadow.
I was fortunate enough to get into it from issue #46, right before the start of the "End Game" arc. But after issue #62 I stopped following it because Robotnik was already dead and things just got too weird and the serious dramatic tone which I loved was almost all gone.
Hopefully Sega snatches the SatAM cast and all the Mobius stuff for themselves so that there's at least hope the comic sorta continues under different people.
30:01 Actually besides it being a JoJo reference its also a Fist of the North Star reference.....but besides that its sad to hear this comic series dying....especialy since theirs a second cross over with Mega Man that features X and Zero besides Mega Man and Sonic
Penders didn't just rip out our childhoods for those of us that grew up with his canon, his lawsuit caused Sega to put into effect strict mandates that every Sonic related anything must follow, destroying all originality the comic could hope to re-attain. sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Ken_Penders%27_legal_cases#Mandates
Holy everloving fuck. Who the hell thought any of those were good ideas? Sonic can't lose? No official sega-original characters can show excessive emotion or be in non-approved relationships? No referencing Shadow the Hedgehog (game) or The Dark Brotherhood? No wonder the comics are dead then.
You know what the worst part is? THEY DIDN'T EVEN GET TO ISSUE 300! That would've been huge for a licensed comic book series. I don't think Ken Penders is entirely to blame for this either. Both Sega and Archie are in the red considering that it's Sega who decided not to remind Archie that their contract was starting to expire, and that Archie wants to now only focus on their company's namesake.
The Aldenator: King of Wackos! Well, you could help me save the comics, which is a possibility, if you sign this petition, please. www.ipetitions.com/petition/project-all-freedom
Even tho I have never read the comic (and I probably never will), I somehow really enjoy this video and the way you present it, not as a critic but just as a sonic fan. It feels really refreshing to see someone on youtube not criticize the stuff they're talking about and just like the stuff and wants to talk about it, this applies to most of your videos but I wanted to comment on this one because I keep rewatching it a couple of times a year.
I (as a fan and collector of the Archie Sonic comics) actually enjoyed and appreciate this nice stroll down memory lane. Thanks for this. I also enthusiastically encourage you to read the rest of the comics and let us know what happened. I still wonder why the Sonic comic series was abandoned, and would some info on that for...closure. Thank You.
Man, what a ride! The early issues of the comic are really nostalgic for me and they're still pretty damn charming! I think the Penders era was prettying entertaining too, for different reasons (you gotta love furry melodrama). Flynn probably wrote some of the best arcs in the series, but the soft-reboot erased a lot of the characters he was developing. I hope some of the Sat-am characters still get use after this.
They still exist as the reboot either didn't actually happen and we're seeing a what if story like Spiderman saving Gwen, or what the reboot actually is is different from how they implied it to be.
Late as hell to the party, but thanks for the kind words and the shout-out.
Quick question, why did Archie end the Mega Man comic book? That question has always bugged me.
Too bad you showed up after Cybershell died, lmao.
BTW big Archie Sonic fan. Your work at IDW never captured my interest in the same way but keep it up.
I wonder does Ian know what dimensional rift Cybershell disappeared into?!
He's not dead he's still hibernating
Still lying about the mandetes?
oh no
That's NO GOOD
Looks like.. you just took some damage

You missed the 'best' detail in Sonic Live!: They were too cheap to buy and too lazy to borrow a Genesis, so there's no console in any of the photos and indeed the 'controller' the boy is using is obviously a TV remote turned sideways.
Wait, so his kids never even had a Genesis? Why did they want to star in a Sonic comic about the games then?
@@legorobot2369 Nepotism. Plus Ken Penders has the social awareness of a neckbeard.
Taken from a tweet he wrote around a year ago as of now, "The photos used to create that cover were the result of last minute improvisation when the original was rejected as the original TV used was deemed too “dated” by the suits. I had just moved and didn’t have access to the gaming console & controllers. @@rodolfocrespo4840 no
@@koolbelzero116 Okay, okay, allow me to explain.

The main thing I hate about the comic getting cancelled is that the spinoff comic Sonic Mega Drive with art by Tyson Hesse will never be finished. It was great, best thing out of the Sonic Archie comics in ages.
DiddlyDiPotatoes I KNOW, right?
Yeah I know! That was the only comic I liked from Archie! For me the others are trash though
I almost wanted to cry over that last issue we'll never get. Or at least not very likely. Fuck.
NαrαnjitαSαbrositα They weren't trash
DiddlyDiPotatoes honestly I only disliked a few things of the series, one being Archie's inserted characters and probably off personality of the actual characters from sega, fleetway was more of the disturbed and cruel version of sonic.
I especially hated the future comics as in making sonic have kids, having him marry the comic series Mary Sue.
It just seemed off, however the team tango comics were my favorite.
Are you kidding? Sonic did the Council of Ricks before Rick and Morty
That's because it's based on Fantastic Four's Council of Reeds.
Rick and Morty bit off of Sonic a few times
Wow you just realized that rick and morty is a big parody of the si fi genre
Rick and Morty borrows, steals, rips off, pays tribute and references everything and anything.

Too many chili dogs before bed.
I also laughed at the idea of Sonic and Knuckles getting married.
who wouldnt have that dream
I think something bad is happening to Archie, first Mega Man and now Sonic.
It's name is Penders.
Then Archie itself
penders didn't have anything to do with megaman and he was taken completely out of the picture around the same time. geez.
Mine Who they said that they wanted to distance themselves from series' that "weren't Archie"
Their priorities are now on Archie, himself.
That storyline was really cool and it led into Silver joining the secret freedom fighters and Rotor and Sonic form their own new teams.
Oh, fate.
Are you saying Ian Flynn isn’t being creepy, weird or egotistical?
When Sonic beat him in THIS issue, bringing their war to an end, the Eggman cracks and he has a mental breakdown and the issue ends with Eggman in a straightjacket.
sonicsaiyan07 love those issues!
sonicsaiyan07 In my honest opinion, the 175-177 Arc is the best Storyline in Archie Sonic History, with Issue 200 coming a close 2nd place!
sonicsaiyan07 I love those so much, they're so well done. 200 is brilliant because that is the logical "end" for Robotnik: after giving his all in the fight against Sonic and losing every time, he's just gone.
Not to mention the Snoo-Pingas usual joke the next issue after that, perfect meme call-out.

Even if IDW does pick up the comic, there's no guarantee the FF will come back, esp. considering the fact that Ian Flynn had to fight Sega to keep the Freedom Fighters in the series after the reboot

Hell yeah it did. While some of it was interesting, like Mobius being a post apocalyptic Earth, other parts got me scratching my head. @@redlol123 Tell that to the *TWO* Genesis Waves, never forget all knuckles tribe and the best character of all... NATE MORGAN!... Maybe not lol

JoelAdair He's notthe only reason tho

Yotsuba
The sonic archive comics have many of them, just collect the archives and the sonic selct

They'd most likely make another Sonic comic universe really...

There’s a dimension where Sonic accepted Knuckles’ steroids
fleetway Sonic is so weird
Gwyn but awesome
I like that the Fleetway version has a evil Super Sonic.
i personally dont Jeremy Knight, i think that having an evil Super Sonic can scar children and thats where the Fleetway Sonic comics went wrong
Scar kids? Seriously?
Super Sonic wasn't technically evil, just completely out of control and thus incredibly dangerous. When playing Sonic 2 to get ideas, the writers were surprised by just how out of control he felt compared to normal Sonic (which is kinda true, his increased speed and jump means Super Sonic can be pretty wild at times) so they incorporated that into the character. Fleetway Super Sonic is quite literally a demon of chaos, so it's quite fitting.
It's also considerably more interesting than just a regular powered-up Sonic.
"'A dragon's spoken word is fact', confirms Knuckles" kills me every fucking time lol
So in retrospect, one SINGLE act of nepotism screwed this whole comic over.
fuck Penders
Tristan Wilson fuck Ken Penders. But at least IDW comics reboot is good. And best of all no Ken.
What a fucking shame. The Sonic comics and the Saturday Morning Cartoon were some of the best aspects of the franchise. I was always annoyed they didn't make any games based on them. Princess Sally is the original waifu.
I see the cartoon as better than the comic.
Both of you could assist in my cause to save the comics by signing my petition, you know. www.ipetitions.com/petition/project-all-freedom
Sally was my childhood waifu
Well, they started to like 4 times, but...bullshit happened that could have totally been avoided and it was all canned. The closest we got to anything was Sonic Spinball and Knuckles Chaotix, the latter which was retconned so hard that they won't even re-release it on any virtual consoles or Sonic collections today.
+digiangel234
Knuckles Chaotix has literally nothing to do with Sonic SatAM.
Didn't that lead to the whole A.D.A.M Saga where Eggman had a super Ai Son.
The nanobots, yes. It also led to Sonic and Sally breaking up because Sally was being written as a selfish bitch.
Like I love it, I own quite a bit, but it got so... off. I remember when Tails fought Sonic because sonic dated his ex or something, and like... what?
Only for it to be revealed that Tails' ex was cheating on Sonic, with himself
Well, not only because of the ex-girlfriend, Tails' parents also served as a reason for the fight.
The thing with Tails' parents got him completely fed up with Sonic and made the fight happen, but the main cause of the fight was because Sonic went with Fiona.
it figures it would be uncerimoniously cancelled
Sawbones Quad It seems that all things good related to sonic must end abruptly.
It kinda just... takes a break in the middle of everything for the Megadrive specials and then stops dead, which... is pretty sad.
jordan stone are you a sonic fan whos your. Favorite character
The comics before the post retcon were pretty good too. The buildup from issue 226 to the crossover was pretty damn epic.
I loved that arc centered around the adaptation of Tail's Adventure. Also, the Sonic Boom comics are great.
Oh my god it’s now hitting me hard that there isn’t going to be an ending to this. Did they ever finish the second mega man cross over? PLEASE TELL ME THEY DID. I want to see STICKS lead the goddamn STREET FIGHTERS.
@@ardent3830 They literally lead an army of 10 total franchises to fight Sigma's army.
Yoshikage Kira just wants to live a quiet life
A quiet life where he gets boners looking at the hands of the mona lisa
Chewiester is that a fucking jojo reference
Chewiester He wants to bite her dusto
NO WEAKNESS
He sure does.
Well I was very sad on the verge of crying and felt like absolute garbage when I saw the thumbnail for this video and just started laughing hysterically so thanks for that cybershell
after hearing about all this stuff about ken panders.....i wonder if chris-chan worships him since he aint to far off from ken panders
Ken Penders makes Chris-Chan look like a cool guy.
actually, he might. this is sorta hard to explain, but there was an issue where sonic encountered his own fan club. they were sonic look alikes, and most prominently, they wore a medallion of sonic's head. sound familiar? so did chris chan, but his was of sonichu. oddly, these are the kinds of epiphanies that can occur with reading the sonic comic while drinking.
Isn't Chris Chan a persona?
Yazanico Speaking of Chris, is he still kicking ? Last I heard of him, he "grew a vagina".
Luke van Kleef This is just one big Jojo Episode and Ken Pender actually has Chris-Chan as his persona, fighting for him.
i should be sleeping but fuck it i'll watchthis video instead.
DJay Ramos Me too
In Penders' defence, he was the one who set the comics on the right tracks (less Adventures, more SatAM) and even though I definitely preffered the Flynn era, and Penders' works did sometimes get a little convaluted and silly, I still really liked the stuff he did.
I do hear that ken sabotaged the creators last chance for a season 3 of Satam
13:08 yo definitely my favorite comic was "Sonic and the secret rings" for the wii
Your Mona Lisa Jack-Off argument was surprisingly refreshing and compelling.
I personally jacked off to it. The argument, not the Mona Lisa.
timestamp pls, im too lazy
I jacked off to the jojo reference
SpiceGirlReligionist I jacked off to kira jacking off to the hands of the Mona lisa

More like A Farewell to Cybershell the UA-camr (2008-2013), (2017-2018) hahahahha amirite?
And he'll die a third time
Well at least hes back now
So that’s 2 resurrections now, huh?
Welp i guess it is
Sonic finished the partnership with Archie to start a whole new comic with DW Publishing (or something like that).
12:36
I’m not seeing things right?
That’s Sonic and the Secret Rings down near the bottom right corner right?
Yep. I noticed that too and fucking chuckled.
When I saw Bunnie as a kid, I had weird feeling. Now, I know wat the feeling is. ;)
Jin Not Jim Probably shame.
thanks Obama
@Fodimin Layton She's like 90% human if you disregard the robotic parts, lol. I think it's okay.
Also, it's just fiction.
Lux m8. people still get feelings for "fiction" sadly.
Are we counting common lust as a feeling?
Ken Penders is by far an expert, no, THE expert at murdering comic series.
Do not ever let him have a job at your comic company. When you fire him, he will reap his vengeance and destroy everything you worked up for so many issues, and not to mention consume and destroy the childhoods, innocence and/or eyesight of all your beloved readers
Fuck Penders.
#FuckKenPenders
We can't get a Sonic Chronicles Dark Brotherhood sequel because of him, I hate that
It really is sad that such a greatly developed world is no more. And it couldn't even get a proper send off.
nicholas buer That is exactly why me and others are banding together to protect the Sonic comics. You can help too, by signing this petition here. www.ipetitions.com/petition/project-all-freedom
+Dcfan200 most of the time petitions never work. No matter how many sign. :/
FirPtl That is because you're not willing to try.
FirPtl Then, I'll take the percentage I've got instead of none at all.
I can't believe you just casually showed the "Alone on a Friday night?" panel and did nothing with it
God he’s pathetic
@@KYRA_RISING UNDERRATED COMMENT
Goodbye, Sonic Comics. I hardly knew ye.
The Sonic Comics were absolutely batshit insane. Disappointed you never mentioned the Xorda, buff Tails, or the time they made an even edgier version of Shadow.
I'm sad. The Archie comics were some of the best parts of the Sonic franchise
My first Cybershell video. I enjoy rewatching these videos a lot.
I absolutely loved the Archie comics--they were my first real introduction to the Sonic franchise. It's sad to see them go :(
I was fortunate enough to get into it from issue #46, right before the start of the "End Game" arc. But after issue #62 I stopped following it because Robotnik was already dead and things just got too weird and the serious dramatic tone which I loved was almost all gone.
@@-Joyfull That tone didn’t go away.
If anything it got bigger.
12:11 Why is Sonic and the Secret Rings at the bottom right? It's not like it's the cover of a comic, you can even see the Wii logo.
Hopefully Sega snatches the SatAM cast and all the Mobius stuff for themselves so that there's at least hope the comic
sorta continues under different people.
Sega is one of the reasons the SatAM cast doesn't get any love. If they wanted them we would have a game that isn't just a spinball easter egg.
Brian Williamson Can you explain the connection between sonic SatAM and spinball? I don't quite get what you mean.
SatAM cast popped up in a minigame as cameos.
their pixel art would appear when you would break the containers in the mini game pinball. it was such a small reference that few care about it.
Holy cow. My history with these comics was the same. Same preferences, same "check-out time."
wow...never knew you could put the KNux comics side by side to make a complete image
Idk how I feel about a kingdom of fursonas being called knothole
30:01 Actually besides it being a JoJo reference its also a Fist of the North Star reference.....but besides that its sad to hear this comic series dying....especialy since theirs a second cross over with Mega Man that features X and Zero besides Mega Man and Sonic
And NiGHTS, and the Street Fighters, and the Golden Axe warriors, and the Breath of Fire heroes, etc., etc.
wait wait wait
is this
a motherfucking
*jojo's reference*
What, seriously? They're cancelling it? Even with all the shit that's happening in the books now?
FUCK.
Thank Riverdale for that, that stupid Twin Peaks rip-off.
25:28
That's seriously horrifying.
Still not has horrifying as the Penders art later in the video.
32:55 is far more horrifying
Not as horrifying as Man-Tails 1:28
I (as a fan and collector of the Archie Sonic comics) actually enjoyed and appreciate this nice stroll down memory lane. Thanks for this.
I also enthusiastically encourage you to read the rest of the comics and let us know what happened. I still wonder why the Sonic comic series was abandoned, and would some info on that for...closure. Thank You.
linux750 You could help me save the comics, if you wish.
linux750 All you have to do is sign my petition. www.ipetitions.com/petition/project-all-freedom
British people who havent had a sonic comic since 2000: Bah
Man, what a ride! The early issues of the comic are really nostalgic for me and they're still pretty damn charming! I think the Penders era was prettying entertaining too, for different reasons (you gotta love furry melodrama). Flynn probably wrote some of the best arcs in the series, but the soft-reboot erased a lot of the characters he was developing. I hope some of the Sat-am characters still get use after this.
They still exist as the reboot either didn't actually happen and we're seeing a what if story like Spiderman saving Gwen, or what the reboot actually is is different from how they implied it to be.
Useless Object Knowing Sega they'll just be thrown aside and never touched upon again
care to explain?
Now I see why there are so many cancerous sonic oc's and fanfics
METAL SILVER IS ORIGINARFL DONUT CALL HIM CANCER PLEAS
Rafael TV but it inspired cancerous ocs

I'm coming up with Trailer park meth lab robtnik OC.
That's right. Sonic has COMIC BOOK NERDS. All becomes clear. ;P

Yes, Sonic and the secret rings on the wii was my favorite issue.
Wow, what a rabbit hole. I think I read every single one of those right up to around the same time you quit on it too.
