I remember the last time he gave a speech here and said fighter jets were obsolete and drones were the future. They laughed at him.
Now he laugh of you 😂
Ukrainian war has proven that when adversary has air defense, fighter jets are nearly worthless, bombers are only somewhat useful for launching guided bombs or missiles from a long distance, but cheap drones are the thing that actually works and everyone is afraid of.
@woopsserg Yeah, but the aircraft used in Ukraine conflict are all old generation aircraft. No 5th gen fighters in that conflict.
@ Does not matter. Russians use so called generation 4++ and actually have shown they can outplay Patriot missiles due to extremely high maneuverability and speed, if the pilot does everything right. 5th gen F35 is like a flying duck in comparison and can be detected by S400. So very likely would have poor chances of survival in enemy territory. Of course nobody tested that in practice.

"America is like Atlas holding up the free world...and you are the arms of Atlas" such a touching end remark.
Wow! That’s some serious superiority complex.
But America does the opposite, slowing progress of the free world because they are desperate to not lose their ability bully other countries and prevent a multipolar world.
Harming free speech of those they do not agree with and forcing "democracy" on those that don't need or want American interference in their politics.
@@RojaJaneman It's not wrong though, without the US armies the world would be a lot different as China and Russia would destroy the world.
@@RojaJaneman It's reality. Nowhere else on the planet has the 1A and 2A and 4A and 5A. Not even close. The only free country is the USA. Every other nation is made up of sheep who allow their authoritarian governments to address their problems by restricting freedoms further and further, with higher and higher taxes and surveillance. Look at Sweden's recent response to the spree-shooting: fewer rights for decent citizens (all the while 'immigrants' are averaging 50+ GRENADE ATTACKS per year, and creating more and more 'no-go' zones, while nothing meaningful is done about them).
@@RojaJaneman It isn't superiority complex, idi0t because IT IS A FACT. U.S. have over 750 bases ALL OVER THE WORLD.
The future of the military needs to be discussed more. This will inform what areas need to be cut and what areas need to be focused on.
I concur…just based on the Ukraine bloodbath & brutal carnage alone, long distance drones and communication security should be at the top of the list. Just as important is drone DEFENSE all the way down to the individual soldier.
You won’t have to wait much longer to see that in action.
Well, the first most obvious future improvement of military is drones and drone camouflage or disguise (because of a.i. with machine optical vision). Yeah it sound like a joke that every bird will be suspect because it could be an enemy drone, but actually that will be the case in a future war zone...as well as every rock or bush too. Camouflage will be the most open field for future development when you take the soldier/pilot/sailor out of the equation and exchange him/her with a land, aerial or surface water or submersible drone (perhaps even camouflaged satellites to look like boulders to avoid a.i. detection/targeting).

Outstanding Interview. Thank You EM
The impression I get is that Elon is winging through this interview. Both the civilian and military leaders seem to have accepted that he has ALL the answers to whatever issues are thrown at him. With all respect to his undoubted talents, I wish that US leaders stopped looking at Elon as some sort of a Superman. This fascination can have disastrous consequences. When a Nation starts looking at an individual as a Prophet it is skating on thin ice indeed.
I think moreso that the military is prodding him. Trying to not only gauge how he thinks his innovations will translate to warefare but also his understanding of how the military wants to use his technology. Elon comes off extremely aloof of what this interview REALLY is about.
@@MrFlyguy071I think it's also just getting on Elons good side through petting his ego.
He is a genius. Period. Not a prophet at all.
I don’t know that they are necessarily doing that, but why not probe and ask the brightest minds for their insights. But to your point, one thing Elon does do and make clear is how much WE ALL are capable of but don’t even give our all. Makes a person want to push harder and stop setting our own limits. Push to be your best. Push to pursue what you are truly passionate about and never give in or give up. Follow your heart. Leave excuses and cut out what needs to be cut that isn’t most efficient. His logic is worthy, to ignore or not take into consideration is a bit arrogant and naive isn’t it? No one is saying he has all answers or making him into anything God like. They are simply taking advantage of the time he is willing to give them. What they do with it, only they decide and can come up with their own forthwith.

Memory is short for people under 30 years old but the discussion about survivability during EMP and fully analog versus digital reminds me of after the Soviet Union fell many details about some of their aircraft came out and one of them was that some of their advanced fighter planes used electronic tubes instead of digital circuits. And military buffs in the west were quick to laugh and say oh isn't it funny the Soviets are so far behind us they have to use these old analog tubes instead of the hot rod digital circuits that we have until someone pointed out that the analog tubes would survive a nuclear EMP blast so their aircraft would continue to fly whereas all the us more quote advanced unquote airplanes would all drop out of the sky because all their digital circuits would be wiped out by the EMP of a nuclear blast. So it was in fact the old tech that the old Soviet Union used which was actually better than the more advanced digital tech.

Well in Battlestar Galactica all the fleets computers are analog because that way they're protected from an AI cyberattack. I think Musk missed that aspect. A fleet of AI drones could be attacked by an AI cyberoffensive that could render them inoperable or even hostile to their owners. The same could be said of all infrastructure that depends on digital systems, and increasingly AI systems.
When lately has anyone use emp in a war
Yet EMP shielding exists. Foils, and enhanced grounding design in circuits that arent cost effective for consumer use - so it stayed classified.
So what Mr. musk is saying is that we should bring back the fully analog model of the F-14. Works for me!

If a war was to be fought, rather drones than humans. I spent 4

Much respect for the military but the damage of war goes far beyond the frontlines when soldiers come home or unfortunately do not.
in like Ukraine they use the like drones on humans
Thank you both for your service
I like the AI and drones future of warfare concept because it minimizes loss of life. To me, it raises the question of if warfare really seeks to take life away or to just gain territory, assets, or achieve some other goal. I think there will always be a part of it where one human wants to overcome the other.
I would assume the logical outcome of AI and robotic weapons on both sides would be to target the enemies infrastructure to slow production capacity and cause as much suffering as possible with the goal of making the enemy population surrender/rebel to stop the pain and suffering.
Are you kidding? It's going to diminish the value of human life even further. It's not going to be solely a "Drone war" That's naive to think that.
@ ideally, drones would do all the combat. Is there a war in history where the only objective is to kill the enemy? I could argue that describes all of them, and I can argue it describes none. The killing is a reality, but usually a biproduct of a higher objective to gain/reclaim territory.
That's a perplexing thing about it. There's plenty of land for sale everywhere.
You think 1 million Israeli drones attacking a poor middle eastern city will result in minimal loss of life?
For the Israelis it might

Love this interview 🇺🇸.
What Elon meant by the Limbic system is the lower brain that we inherited from our ancestors and is the source of our emotions. Animals evolved pain and pleasure as simple signals to avoid danger and seek things needed for survival. This is also the source of motivation - the motivation to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Clearly if a creature did not do these things, it would not have survived and only those that had it left descendants including us.
AI doesn't have anything like this. So Elon is wondering, as many others have, why would AI care about Humanity? How would it find purpose? What is its motivation? What prevents an AI from acting like a selfish sociopath? Lacking emotion, it would approach it from pure reasoning, Why would it conclude that it needs Humanity? If it reasons that we are irrelevant or even dangerous to its existence, what prevents it from taking steps to harm us?
It goes much deeper than that. Many are wondering, without force of will, why would an AI do anything at all? Even for an AI to become a "selfish sociopath", it requires a clear force of will and legitimate drive. This is why many believe self-actualization of AI may not entirely possible and that "AI" will forever be relegated to fancy calculation tools and on-dimensional agents.

8:37 The US is high tech, low production, the PRC/red China is medium to high tech, high production. I think the latter wins :S
9:36 because the US doesn't understand that this is a demand right now, and the PRC 🇨🇳 , being a fascist country, tells their "private industry" what to make, regardless of current commercial business demand in the private sector.
That's how USA won WW2. Lots of our designs for tanks, airplanes, etc where individually inferior to German designs, but were optimized for mass production & field repair. A German general was quoted "Our Tiger tanks are worth 4 Sherman tank, but they bring 5!"

What if at one time the planets behind Earth had already hosted human-like species, following a long historical timeline but gradually over billions of years, drifted outside the habitable "Goldilocks zone," leading to apocalyptic events that wiped out life? Mars, which resembles Earth, possibly had liquid water in the past, suggesting it might have once supported life. If this pattern continues, Venus could be the next planet to move into the Goldilocks zone at the perfect distance to begin fostering life, while Earth, over time, may become more like Mars as it moves further out into space. Perhaps Venus, rather than Mars, should be humanity's primary focus, as Mars will eventually drift toward Jupiter's orbit, making it even more inhospitable.

So many people have been against the Ukraine war BUT this war has revealed the total change in warfare by the introduction of drones and the superiority of inexpensive smart weapons against air and hard targets like tanks. The US should feel lucky to see this revolution before having to face an enemy that has embraced the new means of warfare. We may have the superiority in numbers but even a much smaller country can stand up to those numbers with more effective, and inexpensive weapons.
No matter what you think of this man. It is in your best interest of this experience to at the very least hear him out concerning AI and it's implications on mankind and evolution. 15:07 sums up the evolution pattern perfectly and the further issues & problems Musk was trying to tell the people in that room are VERY important for each whether military or not. This is by far one of his deepest discussions on the future of AI and this will be proven in years to come. Unfortunately this school is a MI complex oriented system so the interviewer did everything he could to bring it back to personnel and the MIC:
The Existential Risk of AI and the "Terminator" Scenario:
Musk explicitly brings up the "Terminator" scenario as a real worry, suggesting that the development of military drones with AI could lead to a situation where machines act against humans. While the interviewer acknowledges this, the conversation quickly moves to the practicalities of drone warfare rather than delving deeper into the ethical and philosophical implications of such a risk. The discussion pivots quickly to how the drones will be used in a practical, logistical sense, with no further discussion of the existential risks.
The Lack of Discussion on the Implications of Full Automation: While Musk repeatedly states that AI will surpass humans and that drones will replace them on the battlefield, there is little discussion on the deeper implications for human society, the economy, or the role of individuals in a world increasingly automated. The discussion focuses on the 'how' rather than the 'why' of these technological advancements.
The Danger of Fighting the Last War: Musk warns that countries tend to prepare for the previous war rather than the next one. He advocates for proactive adjustments to military strategy and technology, rather than waiting for a shock to force change. (typical US posture)
The Danger of Localized AI in Drones: Musk notes that drones will likely need localized AI for better control, which means they could operate autonomously within set parameters. This raises concerns about how much control humans have over these AI-driven weapons. This point highlights the danger of handing over too much control to AI without fully understanding the potential consequences - Set localized drone to target only "this" and it will keep destroying "this" until there is no more. Tanks or... people.
The Need for AI Alignment: Musk argues that it is essential to develop AI that is aligned with human values and interests. He believes that the best way to achieve this is to create AI that is "maximally truth-seeking and also curious". He suggests that a curious and truth-seeking AI would naturally want to foster humanity because it will find human civilization more interesting and complex than other options. This is to avoid AI being "contrary to humanity.
The Over-reliance on Technology: He raises the point that technology should be tested at small scale to prove it's efficacy before being blindly adopted. He also notes that there is a tendency to blindly adopt technology, which he notes is not always the correct approach.
Call him a "nazi" or whatever you please you have that right but don't downplay or worse be ignorant of what one of the leading AI experts is trying to tell you whether directly or indirectly because in the end when he says "I told you" it will only be your fault.
He has a lot of power. It is very important to hear what he has to say. Most importantly, we need to understand how shallow his thinking is.

Elon is good at both innovation and mass production. When comparing the US and China, the former excels at innovation, while the latter is skilled at copying and turning ideas into mass production and commercialization. Elon will help revitalize the US industry by combining both manufacturing and innovation.
You're talking about the past, not the future. The Chinese can easily pivot towards innovation. It's already happening.
@@netscrooge I understand your point of view. I am Chinese and was educated in Hong Kong, still influenced by traditional values. Chinese people are good at copying & improvemet because our education system forces us to do so. We are required to follow the ways of our seniors, respect their methods, and, as a result, we struggle to think outside the box.
Take Jack Ma, for example-he initially did well but ultimately had to operate within Xi’s boundaries, diminished finally. Dictatorship may accelerate progress by leveraging national resources, but most of the time, these resources are allocated in the wrong direction because their fundamental principle is control and power, not humanity or innovation.
That’s why I don’t believe the CCP will lead in technological advancement-though they may dominate in market size. Only if their political structure truly becomes democratic and culturally open to new ideas can they achieve genuine innovation.

If you're talking about the US, I don't agree that it is a democracy in any meaningful sense. Have you studied how power in the US actually functions?
@@netscrooge Regarding the first one, allow me to explain a bit more. You are right-Asian immigrants (including those from Taiwan, Japan, and Korea), like Jason Wang or Fei-Fei Li, are highly innovative and have established strong reputations in the US. There are likely a few reasons for this First, many of them come from poor families but have open-minded parents. They must work extremely hard to earn a living and support their families. This is the strongest motivation among Asians-bringing prosperity back to their families. Second, this also relates to Chinese culture (and Asian culture as a whole). We are extremely hardworking and often dedicate our entire lives to work, with little focus on entertainment or leisure. Third, it also depends on the country they move to-education, freedom of speech, and access to resources all play a crucial role in fostering innovation. China is lacking of those. There is nothing to be concerned about regarding DNA-I believe all people are equally capable of innovation. It is simply a matter of cultural and political constraints in their home countries.
Regarding your second question about US democracy, sorry to say that I am not familiar with its structure and how it actually functions. However, compared to a centralized government like the CCP’s, it should be better, even though it appears chaotic and full of conflict. I would love to learn more about it. It seems quite interesting that after Trump came into power, everything could suddenly turn around, and the opposition party appears much weaker compared to the period before the election. I don’t fully understand this dynamic. I believe that a society should not swing too far left or too far right. It needs to stay balanced in the middle most of the time, as this is best for ensuring stability and a good quality of life for the people.

I've been saying this for 10 years. We're so lucky to have Elon Musk on our side. Democrats are told what to think by talking heads in suits. He is out there getting sh*t done!
Man with $100B donates $300M to Trump’s campaign. He gets access to federal finances under some vague “special government employee” title. Decides overnight to eliminate the Department of Education which serves 7 million American special needs children. Does anyone not see the problem normalizing and even lionizing oligarchy.
I agree he seems to have a high desire to see America advance itself. America has tremendous potential it just suffers from massive corruption.

Elon is like a chess player who is always several moves ahead. And he has proven that this is the case. So it does make sense to listen to him. A very intelligent person.
Evidenced by Musk's explanation of the present rapid evolution of warfare , near future generals, colonels, captains, sergeants and enlisted will ALL have to be MUCH more technologically adept/oriented if their "armies" are to win a war. Wonder if the curriculum has already been sufficiently changed at the various academies to meet future demands? Recruiting standards will be quite different.
What experience does musk have in war? Got his history wrong it was French that marched with bright colored uniforms everyone else was using better uniforms
It's frightening. Imagine how many US soldiers would've died in Iraq, if the enemy would've had access to mass production of drones. All those MRAPs and Humvees are really big targets difficult to defend. And drones are very small - you won't catch them with a 50 cal, unless you know exactly where they are.
@Unknown-r2p2o Musk's childhood was a war. Growing his companies was a multitude of wars in which he was the VERY successful supreme commander. His waged a successful war against a corrupt media & government interference after turning Twitter into a weapon of truth, and is now fighting a war against corruption in our federal government with his fellow brilliant comrades. GOT IT?

Elon was getting emotional at that last line. This guy truly loves the United States of America. What a gift he is.
A "gift" with a very high price.

Jack of all trades, master of none
Who, Elon? He has landed a booster 100s of times, scaled production of fantastic EVs, built a massive AI data center practically over night, …
@@Steve-Richter It is childish to think that Elon himself is responsible for the successes of spacex. He has no understanding of warfare, and suffers from a delusion that because he was successful in one domain (getting money) he must be an authority on everything from german politics to gender to the future of warfare.
@ How do you explain that NASA, Jeff Bezos, China and Russia have not been able to do what Elon has?

the exchange at 32:00 is so intriguing because you are watching the interviewer (and west point as a whole) in real time realize that they are not competent in the field of future (but really, current) warfare. Talk about Scipio and the Punic wars all you want, the emperor has no clothes.
I attended my brother's graduation from West Point years ago.. maybe 11 or so, and Obama was the speaker. I actually fell asleep. It was beyond boring and nothing but empty statements and talking points. The difference between a career politician and someone like Elon is unbelievably important, especially to our future military professionals. This conversation was filled with forward thinking ideas and useful information, a little too short but very important things said like be curious about a lot of things and apply critical thinking to everything, be extremely good in the thing you are working with or leading. In a world where more and more warfare will conducted by AI and robots its critical that our officers understand the systems being used, what they are good and bad at, and critically think about what they are being told. Not simply follow orders or do what you are told, or lead groups of people or systems bc your rank and have no concept of their capabilities.
Elon speaks more intelligently than he tweets, is as if they are two different people.
Because his verbal human communication and taping alphanumeric keys speed is not keeping up with the wrap speed of his mind. Like when he has to slow down to our brain speed.

Elon Musk is very smart. No I don't mean that he is clever which many of us are, but he takes the knowledge he acquires and thinks about it in terms of its applications. That is he thinks like an engineer and is also a businessman.
Engineers are people who imagine the future and create new technologies. They typically think all the time. He also added that the limiting factor in modern warfare is a country's industrial might. Its ability to produce robots at scale and not just - The Kill Ratio. The United States needs to take engineering very seriously.
Yeah he’s Fredo smart.
Enron musk sure does leave his musk in the federal government

I think he's both right and wrong about drones. Drones are well used for overwhelming your enemy in numbers and accurate targeting. F-35 is not going "obsolete" that planes landing speed is the maximum speed of drone. The F-35 is not supposed to be a fighter jet contrary to popular belief but more so a flying super computer used to see behind enemy lines and can THEN either strike or use it's computers to talk to long range weapons like cruise missiles and drones. His remarks about "you'd lose a drone over a pilot" is a more than valid argument though a drone is much more susceptible to being turned against you as we saw in 2010 when Iran hijacked the communications of a US drone spying in their airspace and stole it. That entire program had to be cut since our adversaries now had not only out hardware but our software.
There isn't much preventing an F-35 from becoming a "drone"...all that is required is to replace the organic human pilot with an artificial digital AI agent. This is what Elon is referring to, not necessarily the aircraft itself.
Drone tech will embody larger flying vehicles as well. Already have AI powered fighter jets.
@ yes, but they're more susceptible to hacking than a pilot defecting. Not to mention we already have many GPS and laser guided weapons that still won't function without the information from an in real time uplink from an F-35 or nearby aircraft.
Good afternoon West Point and Elon

Please remember that many of these superior ideas are put forth by an individual that grew up in a totally different culture. A culture of class system and no understanding of democracy. Ingenuous ideas are and should be embraced for the benefit of all Americans.
"Ingenuous ideas..." ah, don't you mean, ingenius ideas??? Generally speaking, isn't it a bad idea to embrace ingenuous ideas?
I looked up ingenuous.
"Ingenuous is most often used to describe someone who has a childlike innocence and openness. It should not be confused with ingenious, which typically describes someone who is unusually inventive or clever, or something made or done in an especially original or clever way. The words look very much alike, but sound different: remember that ingenuous sounds like its linguistic relation genuine, while ingenious sounds like genius-despite the fact that there is no etymological connection between those two. For more on this pair,

Are they trying to bring everyone's IQ down or what?
High IQ is only good for purpose. Without purpose the smartest man would live on a farm and milk cows (I kid you not, the man with the highest recorded IQ on earth is a farmer shoveling manure and milking cows and has written a book or other about meditation. Why, because has no other purpose and was excluded from utilizing his IQ by others with purpose and lower IQs).
Let’s hope the current upper military leadership take this message and lessons from the Ukraine war to actively analyze our current weapon systems and doctrines and adjust now and not stay stuck in the last war’s tech. We still have time to take a right turn to a new warfare paradigm.
