The Native American hop dance he did was first introduced in the victory tour(a little of it was done in the later triumph concerts like LA but wasn’t fully there until 1984)
wouldn't be very good. One of the trajedys of this period is that a lot of capital wasn't spent on cameras to record this stuff. You can really tell this when you see that classic vintage footage that ABC's 20-20 took for their interview with Michael back in the day versus everything you've ever seen from the period. Its crisper has has better lighting. And i'm just assuming 20-20 used their own cameras because I don't have proof. As a fan you can see there is more chemistry between them here as opposed to the Victory tour.
Michael didn't even want to do the the "Triumph" album and tour.He intended to leave the Jacksons after the end of the second leg of the "Destiny" tour in early 1980.
@@jr9249 Yeah, I learnt it a few years ago. A man called Tom Perry, a former sound engineer who worked with the Jacksons for their "Triumph" album, gave an interview around 2017. No it wasn't. Michael was far better as a dancer throughout his Jackson 5/Jacksons days. He's just not as focus on dancing as much here. This tour he was more concern with his vocals.
William King Michael was 1000x better during 1984 . he started to integrate the moonwalk & other street dancing into his choreography. His kicks , spins & robotic movements were much more crisp . Whatever you're smoking on you needa quit it asap
blood wave I've watched him dance on several variety shows, tv specials, etc throughout his youth. Nothing he did past the late 1980s can match the versatility and raw dancing ability he had when he was 15-25 - even his spins were better. He was as good a dancer as you can possibly be - timing- and rhythm-wise, as well as in terms of whole body coordination - during that time period. Don't get me wrong, MJ was still great later and actually developed much more of a distinctive style by then, but his body was already showing signs of aging (dancers physically deteriorate just like athletes do from "wear and tear").
This tour looked like they just rushed and threw it together lol. Mike don't even look in peak shape, for himself. This and the history tours were his "beefy" days. Overall he got better as a performer, but this tour laid the blueprint for all others afterward. Right down to the set list virtually.
Never seen Michael this way as an adult. Seems he got much slimmer after going solo. Perhaps not having family around with more regular meal routine. He looks great with a little more meat here. But was always amazing!
I love everything the Jacksons have done, especially during the Epic records years. And Michael was the principle songwriter on the Destiny and Triumph albums, right? I listen to Michael podcasts and whatnot, and someone brought up a point that kinda made me think on one of them. As much as I absolutely LOVE the Triumph and Destiny albums (now, only talking about the Jackson-penned stuff, okay?), did anyone feel that in a sense, Michael may have saved all the REALLY good material for only HIS albums? One may want to argue that he was only writing stuff for the Jacksons he felt was good for the Jacksons, but come on, it shouldn't make a difference since he's the lead singer like 95% of the time. And the rest of the brothers singing backup on his solo material proves it won't make a difference. Could yall imagine Billie Jean or Beat It being on the Triumph Album??? Or "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" or "Working Day And Night" being on Destiny? LOL. That'd be insane. But yeah, that was just a random question I'd like to ask all my fellow MJ/Jacksons fans here.
Lon Tanner. I dont have strong opinion on what you said, but I have pondered this: I wonder why the rest of the Jacksons didnt exploit their own talent more? Now their deal with Epic may have called for Michael to lead on, say, 90% of their songs, and I'm sure the record company had the last say on what songs made it to an album. But I think the Jacksons missed the mark when they didnt exploit their talents more in concert. Now, to be sure, Jermaine did when he was with the group, but Randy, for instance, is a VERY capable singer. Jackie has a very serviceable falsetto, and a competent tenor. Indeed, I have heard Jackie down in the baritone regions. Tito would be best in his baritone, though he has a 'serviceable tenor. See how circular this is? They all have talent, but in their presentation, they chiefly sing background. Even their background singing has to be somewhat muted (I've heard that their mikes are always 'turned down'), to allow for Michael's thin voice to dominate. And as far as I'm concerned, I would ALWAYS have a guest spot for Jermaine to come on and do some Jackson 5 songs (the record company certainly would pull the plug on him doing his own Motown songs). But, I'm back to Randy. He has all of the musical skills___drums, percussion, hella keyboards and vocals. But they all seemed to take a back seat to Michael. I'll continue to shake my head on that one.
+Foster Mac They had a chance to do all that when Michael left but didn't. The victory album wasn't nearly as good as the Triumph and Destiny albums, which coincidentally Michael played a bigger role in terms of songwriting and singing. Also, they all release solo albums during the time Michael was going solo. They weren't being held back.
+Foster Mac I agree with you on Randy. I've listen to his solo albums and he is definitely musically gifted. Randy is probably the only one I've seen (outside MJ) who's shown the ability to make good songs outside of the group.
William King. I want to believe that about not being held back, but their output was essentially one solo album apiece. One, Marlon's, went gold). Jackie's sold poorly, and the group effort of Victory was uber successful in that it sold 7 million. The much later follow-up 2300 Jackson Street, went Gold, although it was considered a failure. Randy and the Gypsies album went nowhere. So the output was 4 albums, 7,500,000 in sales. Wit any other act, that would be considered a success, but because the output seemed to be so disjointed, it appeared to most people as failure. BTW, this says nothing of the gold output from sister Rebbie with production help from Michael. As for writing, Triumph was filled with output from the brothers. I have no hesitation in saying that writing was their problem. They can bring on writers like the Porcaro brothers (of Toto fame), as well as all of the staff at Epic, and anybody they can convince Epic to pay for. That includes output from Michael. I think their issues were more organic. They were schooled to subjugate themselves to , and operate with with sensitivity to, Michaels dynamics. Michael's momentum with Thriller essentially overpowered any buzz they could get, so a savvy marketer would play off Michel's success, and Epic wasnt about to let that happen. What troubles me though, is why they didnt sever their contract with Epic, and move to say, MCA. MCA was beginning to have a lot of success with the black acts of the day, and could use a vehicle to gain a cross over act. My conclusion? All of this could have happened, but these guys had been professionals for over 20 years at the end of the 80's. They were just plain tired of the game.
William King. When you get a chance, listen to Tito's recently released album. I think you'll come away very impressed. Remember Tito has played his guitar for more than 40 years. he can put a song together with just strings. Jermaine's bass playing skills are no joke. Jackie writes his own chord progressions on keyboards. My point is that these things are not in the public arena because these guys havent exploited their talents and their opportunities as other acts would have, and the eternal question is why?
