A common comment I'm seeing is that this movie doesn't deserve 2 parts as much as others and you're all 100% correct. There are a lot of movies I've done in 1 part that I like more than this movie. As I was writing the script the conclusion kept getting longer and longer and what I usually do at the end of writing is pull some of the longer wins out of the main section so I can expand on them in the conclusion. I had to do the opposite this time so some this main part became longer. I know not everyone cares about the politics and backlash and what have you, but there are some things I really wanted to talk about. There will still be the usual thematic and broader stuff about the movie in the conclusion as well. Hope it wasn't a huge mistake! ;)
Yeah I didn't think No Doubt was the right song in that fight scene, but I can appreciate where your argument for it. I guess with me (and maybe a lot of people), the most important part of the movie is the music. However I did like that Nirvanna part, of course Nirvanna is always a win for me.
i know a lot of people hate how stupid it is that Fury lost his eye to a cat, but if you phrase it differently... `` he nearly got his eye ripped out by an alien with tentacles in its mouth and a pocket dimension for a stomach ``
as someone who took in a stray and has a forearms that are practically chewtoy/scratch post now - I think Fury is lucky even if Goose was a regular cat - and he's a badass and a survivor.
Well said…much better! It still was laid out that he trusted someone and he was betrayed….but it does help! Especially if you take what fury said initially and put it through the lens of him being less than honest to save face….
Can I just say how much your videos have helped me to enjoy movies more? Especially Marvel movies? I mean, I had loved them before but I sometimes feel ostracized when I say I like certain movies (like this one). People disagree and they point out flaws as though it’s a reason for me to hate the movie too. So when I see these movies in theaters, I don’t focus on the flaws, or what other people might think of it. I think of what in the movie appeals to me, I focus more on the good things first. So even with a movie like MIB International, I still enjoyed the good stuff that was in it, even though the movie itself was...meh at best. TL;DR: thank you Lee, for helping make movies even more fun for me!
Well like Cinema wins said "over optimism is like diabetes" try and strive to have a standard, doesn't mean you can't enjoy movies by a long shot but realise that if a movie has legit problems just as you purposely ignore them people can purposely point them out.
@@justintyler4693 I'm confused do you dislike larson's portrayal? because while yes beautiful women don't need to directly state it their vanity but it doesn't mean its that big of a deal when does happen as far as I know it never really happens in the movie
I guarantee 99% of people who hated Brie's acting in this loved the Matrix, despite Reeves, Fishburne, etc having similar styles of acting. But that movie gets a pass because it's cyberpunk meanwhile people hate Brie Larson because of her interview etiquette.
I also don’t like how everyone says Carol is to cocky and cynical yet everyone loves Iron Man for being cocky and cynical. (Plus, this is the first Captain Marvel movie which means her character will develop as time goes on)
@@Calliopebooks Iron Man’s first movie was built around the plotline of Tony Stark getting served humble pie, first I think 25 minutes into the movie he’s mortally wounded by weapons he made and that’s just the start. That was the first 20 minutes of the film and shows Tony stark is only human, and then let’s also mention he was the butt of some jokes like how he couldn’t initially control thei ron man jets Where Brie... never struggles whatsoever in this film, the best we got is some generic flashbacks that she didn’t even remember for most of the film and thus weren’t relevant to the characterization or the actual story
I just watched this film again with an open mind and I actually really enjoyed it. It’s amazing how much a negative mindset going in ruins a film for you. I don’t think Brie Larson was that bad in this film, she was quite charming to me, I don’t think she was given enough to do and her character is not as clear as the other MCU heroes but I still enjoyed her. I really like the plot and side-characters more than I like most marvel films. I do think that people were un-necessarily harsh towards this film, maybe because when people give you all the flaws of the film they become more clear but when re-watching it those problems don’t bother me as much. Yes they’re still there but they don’t bother me.
I agree, it wasn’t 10/10 but it wasn’t a shit show either. Everyone else except Brie made this movie and I think it’s mainly down to the directing as in End Game she seemed so much more there with only four minutes of screen time. Hopefully they’ll learn from this time and make her a little more present; she sort of reminded me of Thor from the first Thor movie.
tansrr That’s a good point, Thor in Thor 1 is not as good as he is now. He’s had roughly 9 years since then but give Captain Marvel time I’m sure we’ll get to see more cool cosmic stuff. Kind of wish we got more cool cosmic stuff in this but eh, I don’t mind.
Same, when I first watched this, I knew nothing about the politics and the arguments everyone was having about it (I don’t pay much attention to that kind of thing) and I genuinely enjoyed watching it. It wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t need to be. This video proves that there are some really good parts. Out of everything, the biggest problem is that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to watch outside. Stay indoors, with the curtains closed, your brightness of whatever you’re watching it on all the way up and the lights off when watching. I would, and have, watched it again.
@@rhodriwilliams2599 I mean, Doctor Strange kept being an arrogant ass up until he faced Thanos. He was humbled a bit at the end of his movie but he was still arrogant and snarky.
@@ihopeicanchangethisnamelat7108 Considering Marvel's first movie for superheroes aren't that great (with the exception of Black Panther, Iron Man 1, and Guardians of the Galaxy) I think Captain Marvel was pretty good. I'd say its Ant Man 1 level, a fun movie I'd watch again, but no way near the best in the franchise. The sequels will probably be a lot better, as usual with marvel movies
I will say this once and once alone: the use of the song "Just A Girl" by No Doubt isn't a bad song choice or trying to ram home a message it's just a good song that happened to have been written around the time this film is set and also personally the fight the song was used in was honestly perfect for the tone that it was trying to set
Yeah, Jayden is right, I meant the reveal that Coulson was acting so odd because he was a Skrull. I mean, I expected some switching around, but not that early, they completely took me by surprise, even though I was wondering about Greggs action choices.
@@swanpride There's sort of a reveal in Coulson's appearance at one point, a profile shot that really looks off for a second. But once he's revealed as a Skrull it fits into place as a split second hint, it's not him.
Yeah, he was also acting strange. I was all "that isn't really like Coulson at all" and I STILL didn't make the leap of him having been replaced because it was so early in the game. Coulson later on in the movie acts more familiar. Great work by Clark Gregg.
I love what you said about Brie Larson’s acting in 7:52. It’s not that she’s a bad actor, she’s just not showy like the others. With her, it’s more internally and is more evident in her eyes (and in that particular scene with Fury, her breathing) but like you said, even though the acting was subtle, you can still see what’s going through her mind. She doesn’t have to say it with a line, because you already know what’s up. Some people are so hard and harsh they forgot about these things, but thanks for pointing it out.👍🏼
They also forget that the entire point of that choice was that the Kree taught Carol to "keep your emotions in check" and that's why her acting remains stagnant throughout most of the movie (at least until she started rebelling against the Kree).
first time watching I wasn't a big fan, but on multiple viewings Carol's attitude, jokes, goofy way of getting around make her fun, interesting, and likeable. she's the quirky confident Tony Stark with less flair for the dramatic and no desire for attention. the hate is very, very confusing and upsetting.
@Anne Isopod rigght. except Carol isn't a random person like Spider-man, she is a skilled pilot who has spent years in the Air Force. yeah, the powers were an accident, so? similar stuff happened to many others. every army is people/aliens just following orders, e.g. Chitauri in The Avengers. Steve Rogers has stolen (borrowed?) a car. and fighting bullies/people who are rude in a movie theater is his whole thing. Tony Stark has ripped a phone from the hands of an annoying reporter and threw it away. Scott Lang's entire backstory is that he stole from bad guys. T'Challa has stolen a car. Spider-man has stolen a car. in Civil War lots of property damage was done to stuff in the airport, and the heroes weren't even saving the world, they were fighting each other. your bias is showing.

I just gotta say, I genuinely liked this movie. Brie Larson did pretty good with what she was given. And, you've gotta admit, there is some absolutely hilarious bits in this movie.
About stargates versus FTL engines... The gates are faster, but the main drawback is that you can only travel to places where there is another gate, meaning that if you're a Skrull refugee, you can only go to places the Kree already know about and can follow you. With an FTL drive, you can go wherever you want.
@@Carabas72 I'm sure she supercharged it and, yes, the Tesseract is the actual source of the energy but Mar-Vell invented a "power core" which could be charged by the Tesseract. That power core (a glorified rechargeable battery) is what fuels the lightspeed engine. Whether sources other than the Tesseract or Carol can recharge it is not something I remember being discussed. Nor was energy capacity or energy consumption discussed.

The other part was dislike of the Captain Marvel character, she’s the WORST in the comics. Three is the fact that I would have been mad if captain marvel did a lot due to being so NEW to the massive buildup of the MCU, I knew the main focus had BETTER be about the main avengers going in.
You need Deus Ex Machina when your villain is Thanos. The Deus Ex Machina wasn't even enough to turn the tide by itself. That's part of what makes Tony's sacrifice so impactful, that he succeeded where the most broken character in the whole franchise had just failed seconds ago.
3:28 I think you have it backwards. VHS were actually in the box, but when they switched to dvd they kept them in a drawer at the front counter and they would put the disk in when you paid for it. Except when they didn't, and you go home just to realize this, and have to drive all the way back to the store. Then by that point the guys shift was over and someone else took over the counter. This person didn't believe you were just in the store and though you were trying to scam them. Then the manager came out to confront you, and you had to get them to look up your account, but for some reason the easiest thing to do took the most effort to convince them to do. Then when they finally realize that you were in there an hour ago, they give you the dvd and tell you to be more careful when you rent them. Maybe check the box before leaving so this doesn't happen again. At this point you want to tell the manager to tell his employees to actually do their job, and it's not your place to do their job for them. You go finally go home, and put the dvd next to the tv because you're not in the mood to watch your movie anymore, and you end up forgetting about it and a week later you realize that you're 4 days over due on the movie and you never even watched it. Then you have to go back into the store and explain why it's late, pay the late fee, and then rent the movie again. God dammit Blockbuster!
While I don't agree with your facts, I've never related to anything more in my life. But I swear, our Blockbuster had a stack of DVD cases behind the main cover on the shelf. It's very possible they were all empty and just like markers for how many they had left in the store. I'll never forget the terror of knowing you were too late and that new release you wanted was going to be all rented out.
@@CinemaWins All I know is that vhs had a hard cover box that they replaced the paper one with. It had the picture of the movie cover on the front of it. The plastic box opened like a book/dvd case and had a little locking system in the "spine" that they had to use a little machine to release at purchase. Once they switched to dvd's, they were small enough that they could keep them in the little paper/plastic sleeves in the drawers behind the front counter. At least in my experience with Blockbusters.
I have been too 3 video stores(A local one that's name i never learned, a Blockbuster and the one that had the big obelisks in the front) and 2 other stores(An IGA and a Fanco) that had rentals, they always kept the VHS tapes in storage and used the box's for the shelves then gave you the tapes in a plastic case with the titles on them

@@aspen1889 That is definitely true, and hate fosters more hate. I think one of the key elements is that the producers responded very immaturely themselves to the initial backlash, generalizing the negative critique as, and I'm quoting, "crying manbabies", further trying to make this be about gender issues rather than just a poor film with a poor cast, that was forced mainly by a political agenda at the time. I think the better approach would have been to just brush it off and stand by their work if they truly believe in it, rather than trying to attack their attackers and fighting fire with fire, when in many cases it was so obvious how they wanted to twist this movie to fit their agendas - and the movie being bad in general (speaking from critics statistics as well as personal opinion) didn't help their case one bit.

Hey, grew up with a blockbuster literally a 5 minute walk from my house, so yeah, I totally remember that none of the boxes had the actual VHS in them. Your memory of that is spot on. That "I have nothing to prove to you" bit was so damn good and honestly the absolute highlight of the movie for me (Epic space battle + badass fist pound energy bomb threat notwithstanding). So many times I've seen the hero fall for the bait and discard their advantage in order to "fight the final boss properly" and I'm always going "Whyyyy?! Why would you deliberately handicap yourself and risk everything when you can just dunk on the guy and end the fight right there?! You don't gotta prove shit to him!". It's a trope I'm honestly super tired of and I'm so glad it got mercilessly subverted here. Honestly, the fact anyone complained about that moment boggles my mind. It's such a dumb trope and it roundly deserves to be eyerolled at. Looking forward to your longer concluding thoughts next week.
Yeah, I was not looking forward to the genre required frenemy fight at the end that would carry on too long for no reason. I'm glad they took it in a different direction. Made more sense for the movie.
Aegix Drakan Not only that, but it really cements her true victory over him. From the start, Yon-Rogg and the rest of the Kree did all they could to control her, having her fight/spar on THEIR terms, with little to no use of her power. They drove it into her head that she was inferior to them, flawed until she could meet their criteria. She tried to prove herself to them so she could feel some true approval from them. Then comes the moment we’re talking about. Yon-Rogg has lost control of Carol. She’s no longer on his side, no longer his underling, no longer his weapon to use as he sees fit! He’s always been in control before, and in that ending scene he’s scrabbling to get some semblance of control back. That’s why he lowers his weapons and says he’s “proud” of her: he’s taking credit for what she’s become, as if he were helping her get there instead of tripping her every step of the way. Then he tells her to prove herself to him through an (attempted) epic and dignified speech, and tries to set the terms of their fight and keep regaining control. Carol blasting him back and declaring she has nothing to prove to him means so many beautiful things at once. She doesn’t let him take control of the situation through deciding the rules of the fight. She doesn’t let him keep any dignity that might even hint that he’s in control - he gets blasted back mid-rant without her speaking a word, leaving him looking ridiculous. And then she simply says “I have nothing to prove to you.” Not only is she simply ending the matter with a few simple yet poignant words (showing she doesn’t need a long speech to put him in his place, or he doesn’t matter enough to warrant a long victory speech, or some combo of both), but this proves that she doesn’t care about whether he approves of her any more. Back when she was controlled, back when he mattered to her, she kept trying and trying to earn his and others’ approval. Ignoring his approval - or lack thereof - means she’s cut all ties to him and is finally FREE. Whew... sorry for the rant. I had to share my love for this scene. - gryphongirl

TrevorBOB - Wow. That was unnecessarily rude. They don’t always upload their videos of specific movies around the same time as each other. Did I kill your parents or something? What’s wrong?
Mr. Raccoon - In a sarcastic way, though. He could’ve said “they need to wait for the blu-ray” instead of “wow. It’s like they need to wait for the blu-ray”. I already know that they need the blu-ray, but why did he have to be sarcastic about it? I never said he insulted me.

Not only was the timing of that Nirvana fade-in great, the song is Come As You Are. I can't think of a more perfect 90s song for that moment: the moment that Carol is realizing the power of coming as she is, so to speak -- embracing her whole skill set and not limiting herself like they've been training her to do. SO GREAT. I hope to see that get a Win in Part 2!
Yeah but it doesn't match her character. If she truly had nothing to prove she would have killed him before he had the chance to speak and not make a stupid last remark.
@@rollerskdude But it does. She looked at him and was just so incredibly disappointed and hurt and pissed off. Just thinking about what a POS this dude was and what he did. Am I the only one who loves Carol's cocky attitude?? It's refreshing to see a female character in Marvel with a cockier attitude, people only don't like it because they aren't used to seeing female characters like this in media. Everyone still loves Tony even though he is cocky... also Carol's attitude and behaviours make me question if I am straight so there's that.
I really like Larsson's voice. It is a lower pitch than many women on screen. And it is nice to see a female character that has self-confidence even while struggling with her circumstances. Someone compared Carol to a victim of abuse and I can see it.
I agree but I also disagree. I like her cocky attitude but I dont think people dont like it because shes female I think its cause she said some stuff that annoyed people outside of the movie.
@@paddyq3235 really because this movie was getting hate BEFORE it even came out because "feminism"... As if this is the first time feminism has been apart of marvel.
@@finnanbreathnach4729 like those 2 would be mutually exclusive. Yeah, got some recognition since it IS that much of a technological achievemnt. But picking that tone/themes in animation feature pretty much guaranteed it would miss the big recognition at the box office, and waaay more people needs to know of it.
I personally love Captain Marvel because it's a power fantasy specifically catering to women. I cant count how many times I had a moment of pure happiness from watching Carol beat up shit that irritates me on a daily basis. When she said "I don't have anything to prove" I felt that in my soul!! Also!! her costume isn't sexualized! it's not a short skirt or boob chest plate. She was allowed to be messy! and yell!! and be cocky!! I loved it! Of course I can relate to male heros (Tony Stark is actually my favourite marvel character and he's quite female coded but that's a completely different topic) but to finally have a hero that realistically experiences the same bullshit as I do and then just kicks it's ass!!! it's amazing! Everytime I see men talk about how she's OP and too cocky I'm just wondering how could they misinterpret this movie so badly
I'd like to wholeheartedly believe that Carol's smile at Stan Lee was not only to make people feel good at the cameo, but also a genuine smile directed at Stan himself.

I’m glad someone else agrees that Carol was emoting subtly on purpose.
That was the first 20 minutes of the film and shows Tony stark is only human, and then let’s also mention he was the butt of some jokes like how he couldn’t initially control thei ron man jets
Where Brie... never struggles whatsoever in this film, the best we got is some generic flashbacks that she didn’t even remember for most of the film and thus weren’t relevant to the characterization or the actual story
@@Ashbringer36 yes but he never lost that sense of cockiness and cynicism

I will say this once and once alone: the use of the song "Just A Girl" by No Doubt isn't a bad song choice or trying to ram home a message it's just a good song that happened to have been written around the time this film is set and also personally the fight the song was used in was honestly perfect for the tone that it was trying to set

Too bad you skipped over the Coulson reveal...that was really well done because completely unexpected.
It wasn’t done that well, fury took off a long time before Coulson called in, timing was way off
Yeah, Jayden is right, I meant the reveal that Coulson was acting so odd because he was a Skrull.
Some people are so hard and harsh they forgot about these things, but thanks for pointing it out.👍🏼
After seeing her in Room, I noticed her subtle acting in Captain Marvel. She did a great job.
They also forget that the entire point of that choice was that the Kree taught Carol to "keep your emotions in check" and that's why her acting remains stagnant throughout most of the movie (at least until she started rebelling against the Kree).
When she's in front of Ronan on his ship, you can SEE the light around her shaped like the symbol on her chest! A win from me!

first time watching I wasn't a big fan, but on multiple viewings Carol's attitude, jokes, goofy way of getting around make her fun, interesting, and likeable. she's the quirky confident Tony Stark with less flair for the dramatic and no desire for attention. the hate is very, very confusing and upsetting.

About stargates versus FTL engines...
The gates are faster, but the main drawback is that you can only travel to places where there is another gate, meaning that if you're a Skrull refugee, you can only go to places the Kree already know about and can follow you. With an FTL drive, you can go wherever you want.
the gates also doesnt require an exorbant amount of fuel to power it.

That was a journey *salutes*
You brought back so many memories long forgotten
@@CinemaWins All I know is that vhs had a hard cover box that they replaced the paper one with. It had the picture of the movie cover on the front of it.

I feel like 75% of this movies hate is just cause people hate brie larson
the other 25% is just people who realize this is a boring movie.
I mean, put a talentless actress in a movie where enforced political agendas drive the production and plot, and a bunch of producers who can't accept genuine critique, and you got this shitshow of a movie. It's greatest quality is that at best its just bland as fuck. That should count for the full 100% of the movie hate
@@Real_MisterSir of course I'm not saying the movie is godsend I'm saying 75 percent of the hate isn't good actually well structured critique it's just brie larson hate

@@NCMonefaith I thought that the first 2 episodes were slow but the rest was good.
I really like this movie. Primarily because of Carol and her journey through it all, her more careless beginnings with the Kree, her slowly rediscovering earth as well as herself and then when she truly becomes Carol again and a hero. I love character driven stories and Captain Marvel just scratches that certain edge for me.
@Anne Isopod It's almost like she was working for an evil empire at this point that couldn't give two shits about "primitive life forms" and her understanding that she was one the wrong side of this conflict is her character arc in this movie. Strange isn't it?

@@akacozymint Pretty much. Got a good amount out of the movie even as a man and if looked at from a feminine lense it just adds to the movie without taking away other interpretations.
I like the movie because of the cat-alien

The mere fact that you believe people dislike this because "it doesn't cater to men" is pure bullshit. How does it not cater to men? It exists in a universe that is predominantly aimed at a male audience, it's a movie about a badass hero (regardless of gender), crazy superpowers and action, aliens, etc. Like, in what way is it not also catered to men? Do you really think that the mere fact that the lead is female, automatically makes it not cater to men? The fuck kinda mentality is that? It didn't cater to people in general, because the movie was objectively not that good, Brie's acting was underwhelming, and the way people associated with the movie tried to "defend" it by lashing out on broad audiences just made it undeserving of its fake praise and whatever awards it got.
How many popular male badass characters get praise for emoting less than Brie does here? Winter Soldier still needs to prove himself to me.
Has he proven himself yet?
