  • Doctor Strange! The MCU keeps pumping these movies out and we keep loving them. Well, most of us. And the rest of you are wrong. Juuuuust kidding. Nonetheless, here's everything right with Doctor Strange.

    My ONLY complaint with the 'I've come to Bargain" Scene, is that they didn't show any loops of Strange just being insufferably chummy with Dormammu. "Hey Dormy!" "How's it going, Dorm-meister!" "So about that bargain?"
    Strange has this unfathomably powerful eldritch abomination exactly where he wants him, and has been through thousands, if not millions of loops. At some point he'd probably be desensitized to the deaths, and act all casual with Dormammu repeatedly killing him, just to further annoy him into giving up.

    I like the jokes as part of the movie. Not because they're super-funny, but because they illustrate Strange's character at that moment. In the beginning of the movie he's unable to have a conversation that doesn't revolve around his career (or musical trivia--which is still just him showing off). After the accident, he can't find joy or amusement in anything. At the end of the movie, he's more settled but also more serious. During that set of scenes, however, he's falling into the student role. He's no longer obsessing over his career or his injury, but he doesn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders yet. He's playful and relaxed and even kind of dorky--it also gives you some insight into how he probably was as a younger man when he first started studying medicine. It also doesn't bother me that they aren't better for more than a slight chuckle because that's one thing that separates him from Tony Stark, who is constantly quipping--particularly since the two characters bear a striking resemblance to begin with. In fact, I find the jokes kind of humanizing. He only occasionally gets a really funny zinger, and that somewhat breaks the cliche that really smart people are also really witty.

    I actually don't think it matters how long Strange was trained, because he never becomes a Master Sorcerer. Yes, the Ancient One calls him Master Strange, but that's only because he defended the Sanctum Sanctorum. In all of his fights, he gets his ass handed to him in magic, and the Time Manipulation was really just the Eye of Agammotto (Not sure if I'm spelling that right). Plus, even in their first meeting, the Ancient One says he's gifted.

    • @Flaris
      @Flaris 7 років тому +45

      Yeah. He improves obviously from knowing nothing, but he has a long way to go. Things worked out because the cloak helped him, he got a bit lucky, and leaned on an Infinity Stone. He has a long way to go before becoming the Sorcerer Supreme.
      And the movie dates events pretty well. If speculation is right then his accident occurs around the time of Iron Man 2. So he has from that point to Infinity War to develop his skills enough for what is coming.

    • @DatAsianGuy
      @DatAsianGuy 7 років тому +11

      yep, the movie also never ended with him becoming Sorcerer Supreme and that's what I'm asking myself, who is sorcerer supreme now or to be more specific who decides next to the ancient one who the next sorcerer supreme is?

Easter egg or not, the film does take place after the first Avengers film. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, people have said that they saw an award in Strange's house that had the date "2016" on it. So there's that.

      Yes, probably. He wasn't exactly the Sorcerer Supreme during the events of the film, so a year of training would make sense when you look at how much he got his ass kicked.

    Benedict is really good with acting and doing his actions as a voice actor. I remember watching a video about how Benedict was the VA for Smaug. He would move around ACTUALLY act out his actions as a dragon during his recording. It was amazing. They even based Smaug's actions and movements after Benedict. Recorded him and used his movements for Smaug.

      Yeah, they used motion capture I think? Which is a cool way to turn real physical performances into digital ones. They usually record the dialogue at the same time as the facial motions to express the character properly. The actors have limited props and set, with no costumes, so they have to create the character and setting entirely on their own. Really cool stuff.

That kind of intense practise and motivation is going make someone real good real fast.

Hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of deaths over many years in that time loop, he retained all that knowledge and all those new magic techniques he learned, making him "The Master of The Mystic Arts" in what seems to be no time. It's the perfect explanation to how he's so good at magic when we see him again in Ragnarok and even more so in Infinity War.

  • @TakedaIesyu
    @TakedaIesyu 3 роки тому +21

    Just rewatched this movie after Wandavision and I actually got that Kaecilius was a bit of a dark reflection of Strange. When he first meets The Ancient One, Strange explains his nihilistic worldview, saying that we're all just insignificant specks in the universe. Kaecilius says the same thing to Strange while he's in the bondage relic, but they come to different conclusions regarding this idea. Kaecilius decides that the right answer is to prolong the lives of those on Earth indefinitely in the Dark dimension, willingly killing those who get in his way. Strange instead finds these insignificant people to be important enough to suffer death upon death for a thousand years rather than allow them to come to harm. There's more to this movie than I thought when I first watched it for sure.

    The timeline does line up tho. Endgame confirms that at least the "Doctor Strange proper" portion of this movie takes place in 2017, "you're about 5 years too early". And I don't think substantially more than a year passes from start to end in this film, right? So, it totally could've started around the same time as the airport fight.

    • @Tom-oz7wk
      @Tom-oz7wk 2 роки тому +1

      You've reminded me why the timeline is so messy. I personally believe the experimental armour incident refers to hammers test pilot who had his spine crushed in the footage in iron man 2. I always thought that iron man 2 took place in 2010 but even if you said it was 2012, Dr strange would've been in his accident prior to the events of iron man 2 and therefore the avengers as well. The problem comes from the fact that in 2012, the ancient one says that strange is still practicing medicine but he would've stopped due to his injuries. I guess it's another line we need to ignore like when thor says he's 1500 years old or like how spiderman homecoming supposedly takes place 8 years after the events of the avengers

    • @ImDemonAlchemist
      @ImDemonAlchemist 2 роки тому +1

      @@Tom-oz7wk Iron Man 2 takes place in 2011, and we know that Doctor Strange starts in 2016. There's no reason to think that it's earlier, especially given that Avengers tower is visible at the beginning of the movie. And Thor being 1500 years old has been stated a bunch of times, it's weird to think about, but it doesn't conflict with anything. The Spider-Man thing though just makes no sense. Homecoming has to take place in either 2016 or 2017, so it's 4-5 years after Avengers. The "8 years later" thing is just wrong.

Except thor and loki are clearly the same age in thor 1 and thor even says "we were 8 at the time" when telling the revengers his snake story which confirms he and loki are the same age. I've commented on your video previously and said how much I enjoy it. What I didn't mention is why I love the Doctor Strange movie. The loss of his hands and by extension his entire world that he spends everything he has in attempts to get it back hit very close to home for me. The anger and frustration, just the rage that targets everyone around him are very close to what I went through losing the use of my legs. You make peace with it or you don't, either way, it IS your new reality and you must learn to work within the confines of the new reality. Some minutes, hours, days, or weeks are harder than others with reminders all around you of what you can no longer do. Doctor Strange shows this as well as it can in the time allotted. The "magic" I learned is very simple, helping people who ended up in my situation. To me, the movie is basically a mystical form of doing the same.
    Your Wins doesn't cover this as you have no reason to, but to me adding my experiences to the story, there are SO many Wins to add to your counter. Thank you again for your channel! I very my appreciate every one of your reviews!

    Let me be clear; I do love this movie. As a diehard Doctor Strange fan, I was super excited to see him in this movie. And Bendict Cumberbatch was perfect. But I have some qualms with it. For starters, I felt like the movie needed to be a bit longer. Strange's training I felt was a bit too abridged. Yeah, there was character development, but the movie as a result of that shortened runtime did a lot of telling instead of showing. Also, the magic, while I loved it; I really wanted to see Strange's alliterations. Also, the Vishanti would have been nice. But as for the positives: Benedict Wong was amazing as Wong. I did like Tilda Swinton and Ejitofor's take on the Ancient One and Mordo. Mordo especially as he is being set up as a cool antagonist. And boy the visuals looked good. But what makes me love this movie is the ending.
    The ending is by far one of the most creative endings I have seen in a superhero film. I'm not shocked as Dan Harmon punched up this screenplay and I could see his influence with this ending. Not only is a creative way to resolve the threat, but also fits perfectly with Doctor Strange in that when dealing with powerful forces, he uses his head as opposed to his might. Overall, I do enjoy this movie and like First Avenger, I see it as a stepping stone to greater things. Score: 85/100.

    He uses the portal doors to take the henchman out of the fight. The cloak saves him. And he beats dormamu with a time loop. Let's be real..... beating dormamu....the transdimensional entity of pure evil.....with magic and skill would be farfetched for him being a noob. Then he keeps training and by infinity war he is a full on badass sorcerer supreme

    I wonder if Strange’s choice of special weapon was those finger ropes because of his constant yearn to use his hands? Like, in the heat of the moment, where he hardly had time to think, his innate desire focusing on his hands came out and that was the reason , so that he could persuade himself that they still work as intricately as before.
    If so, that’s an amazing portrayal.

    One point I really loved, and I wished you'd included a bit more of it, was in the beginning when Kaecilius called The Ancient One "Hypocrite!" right when she demonstrates her power in the Mirror Dimension. For me, it was a "What? How?" moment. You noted how we understand later that her power comes from her drawing from the Dark Dimension, and you also noted that she's a morally ambiguous character, but that moment when he shouts "Hypocrite!" really ties those together clearly once we understand it and was a great way to tell the audience "There's a complexity here that you can't see yet."

    Tilda Swinton just sells it as the Ancient One. Screw a character from a comic being a set race or gender at times, just look at Heimdall for an example In many comic adaptions he is white and Idris Elba makes a great Heimdall. Movies should choose the actor whose personality suits the character and Idris Elba is good at playing the role of a leader, warrior, or guardian.

    So just to clarify a few things on the continuity side that you could have included in the video, but no probs either way.
    The Airforce Colonel with the broken spine is 100% the hammer industries test pilot. You said it yourself at the training montage bit in the movie, where you suspect that a lot of time has passed since he actually started training. So the time jump from him having his accident at the same time as Iron Man 2's events. To him battling Dormamu at some point around age of Ultron, is appropriate.
    Because this also explains where Thor was in the civil war movie. It was said that he was off doing Asgard things. The end credit scene makes sense, only if it is happening before the Civil war events. And with enough time before, for Doctor strange to have gone from lucking his way through his first major battle, to being the magical protector of Earth, that Thor comes to for aide. Dr. Strange is much more confident in his abilities in that end scene with Thor, which suggests some time has passed since his battle with Dormamu.
    The final piece of the puzzle here, is that they originally wanted Doctor strange to come out a year or two earlier. They put it on hold because Ben Cumberbatch was busy on something else. It was meant to fit into the continuity before Civil war. And in true sensible Marvel fashion, they knew they had a script that they were happy with, and left it alone. Even if its events say slightly out of line with where we currently are up to. They have left it up to the audience to determine that this movie's events actually happen 2 years or so in the past.

    6:10 I love this type of shot; it is done best in "The Elephant Man".
    When Anthony Hopkins's Dr. Treaves first sees John Merrick, John hurt is not on the set with him, it is just a long stare.
    Hopkins had not yet seen the Merrick makeup, but had read all the associated literature seen the real photos.
    In his head he was repeating a snippet of the Lord's Prayer "I will hold true in Heaven as is held true on Earth".
    Amazingly, he did not know that the camera was zooming in--he was just looking at the backstage repeating this in his head, wondering what agony such an afterlife must be if all your life was Hell--and right at the apex of the zoom, perfectly, his tear breaks and rolls down his cheek, and that was real, his real life encounter with his imagined idea of truly meeting the real Joseph "John" Merrick, and is shot, lit, and framed so perfectly.

    Doctor Strange is an amazing movie, the only MCU movie I like more is Captain America: the Winter Soldier. The visuals were stunning and the cast was great. Benedict was perfect for Doctor Strange and I can't picture anyone else playing him. I also loved the set up for Mordo to become a powerful villain, the only other MCU villains that I have seen get that sort of attention are Loki and Zemo (I don't really see Bucky as a villain because he was brainwashed and was a victim of Hydra when he was the Winter Soldier). This was also probably the only movie where I told people that it was worth it to pay the extra money to see it in 3D too.

      its my second favorite MCU film too (behind Winter Soldier too). only problems with it are an underdeveloped villain (again) and a few too many forced jokes, but the cast, visuals, and plot made up for those minor issues. fantastic film

      I would say Kaecilius was like most MCU villains, not horrific, but nothing amazing either which was why I focused more on the development of Mordo's fall to becoming a villain instead which was what held my interest. Mads Mikkelson's performance was probably the saving grace of Kaecilius, it also helps that I am a huge Mads fan. But when it comes to MCU villains including Netflix, the ones that impressed me were Loki, Zemo, Wilson Fisk, and Killgrave. But it is really cool that we have the same taste in MCU movies.

      +Evan Brownlow most of the time the forced jokes didn't really annoy me because the other character in the scene would have the same reaction as me, or one very similar. my favourite is when Wong is just glaring at him. it's almost like an insurance policy if some jokes don't land, if they don't you get a little more immersed in the film anyway.

    Another win is that this film takes place around a character with a disability, which is Strange's major nerve damage which leave with him scars, shaking hands and hands that hurt at certain touches. He needed physiotherapy for that sh*t! Whenever we see Strange's hands they're scarred and/or shaking. We're told that Strange could have fixed his hands, that's the whole reason he went to Kamertaj (sorry if I butchered that), to get his hands fixed!

    The fact that this movie introduced me to a Marvel comics character I've come to adore, seriously the first words out of my mouth when this ended were, "where has he BEEN all my life!?" this is a special movie for me for kind of a weird reason. The moment when I was watching this movie, and Strange is screaming his lungs out on that LSD trip the ancient one sends him on, was the moment I first really felt my son moving around in my stomach. It was the first movie I saw in theaters while pregnant and the little guy was just losing it, like genuinely felt like somersaults in there(no matter how impossible that is). So love for the character I developed aside, that's what draws my heartstrings to this every time I watch it.

    What I love about this movie is Strange's character development. A lot of it was addressed in this video but I wanted to point out one more thing: in the beginning, even though Strange is the best of the best in his field, he's terrified of failure. He refuses to even try with patients he deems impossible to "fix". He won't even see them. And in the end the way he beats the Big Bad is by losing/failing over and over again. In a way he's sacrificing himself in more ways than one. He's not just prepared to die in pain over and over, he's prepared to lose over and over.

      NY sanctum gets attacked. He shifts them into mirror dimension.
