Man thank you so much for posting this video. Surprisingly none of my local bike shops knew how to disassemble a coaster break and make it into a free well LOL. I watch the Video twice and then it took me about 30 minutes from start to finish while pausing your video to get everything knocked out. Very much appreciated
Great how-to, very clear and easy to follow. I'm a mom who knows next to nothing about bikes but this was so easy i did it myself in about 20min. now my balance bike move-up kiddo can actually ride her hotrock!! Its been sitting for a year cuz she couldn't ride it with the dang coaster brakes! Thank you!!
Thank you man, this video helped me alot for this dirt track i live by called a pump track. I had a bike with a coaster brake that would always get in the way when i get air but now i have a bike with a freecoaster that i didnt have to pay any money for. Thank you :-)
Crazy I just got a 12” kink roaster for my daughter and searched how to mod the coaster brake. This was the first video that pops up and it’s the exact bike. Thank you!
Thank you! Great video. One small tweak that worked well for me was instead of discarding the small washer I put it between the the tabbed washer (the one you modify by bending the tabs) and the axel catch... This ensured the free wheel is butter smooth with no accidental catches 👍🏻
Thanks. Additional washer worked perfectly for me on an old hotrock 20. Without washer, forward pedal was not catching immediately and spring was catching while back pedaling.
Good instructonial video. Just did to my 4 year old's SE Bronco. If you a handy with tools it will take you about 10 minutes. He was ready for a freewheel since about his 3rd time on a bike. Glad I found this as now he can get some more use out of his current bike.
Thanks for the informative video. Ok, if you're struggling with the hub engaging when you pedal foreward, you can try this. Don't remove the washer as advised here. Don't try and "stretch out" the spring. Simply add another washer. Also, pay particular attention to how much you tighten the outer nut against the bearing race when you're reassembling the hub. Tighten it just enough to not have any play in the axle, before adding the lock nut. He touches on this vaguely. When you attach the wheel to the frame, and start securing the axle, use a conical spanner to ensure there's no further tightening of those two nuts. I did this to my cruiser bike and this is what I worked out through trial and error. Not trying to be a smart a**, but hopefully this helps someone. Also these brake mechanisms can vary slightly from what I've seen on different videos so the extra washer may or may not work for you.
You don’t, but you may need to use a washer or make a spacer the same thickness as the arm so that when you put everything back together it all lines up as before. Hope that makes sense.
You have a new follower! Thank you for this simple yet super helpful video. I definitely advise using the cone wrench, but I get you were trying to explain it with the basics.
Thanks bro saved me buying a new back wheel hahaha I thought it was to do with the rear sprocket both kids bikes are sorted and their first time trying they can ride surprising how much pedal brakes stop kids from learning
So I'm trying to fix up a couple bikes for my girls. They aren't in need of BMX mods per se, but both girls have asked for hand brakes instead of coaster brakes. I'm pretty handy, but I've never done mechanic work before (more woodworking/construction type stuff). Would it work to do this mod to rid their bikes of the coater brakes and then I could install front and rear hand brakes? I've found tons of videos like yours, explaining how to make it a freecoaster. (Though yours helped explain it best to someone who's not already knowledgeable of the mechanics of a bike.) I've also seen several on installing/replacing brakes. However, I can't seem to find any videos or articles on converting a bike from coaster brake system to a hand brake one, and how to do it safely. Thanks!!
I would suggest getting the brake on the bike and working before this. Many bikes have a hole in the frame on the top back tube where the brakes can go. You probably want regular caliper brakes. if the hand brakes stop, turn it into a this. I hope this helps
Just finished the ‘mod’ :). I have never worked on a bike before so it took me about 1 hour. I got stuck trying to get the wheel back in. But I just kept watching, pausing and rewinding. You can’t imagine that three different bike shops turned me down. Too lazy to work in this country. My little girl will be happy and I hope it works well for her. Thank you so much!!!
I agree, the public do not respect bike mechanics enough and it turns bike shop employees & owners grumpy. Some times it is as simple that they only want to work on $2k and up bikes. Bike mechanics is def a craft
@@Stackedbmx Yes, thank you for putting this educational resource in our hands. Next project will be my girls "bigger" girl bike 16". She wakes up every morning and sits on the bike to see if her feet touch the floor. So I will have to come back to your video in a few months and 'mod' again.
Ty I acquired a Ritchie bicycle and it is a free wheel for the back and man this bike is awesome. But it's a one of a kind parts bike seems like only his parts
Thanks for this video. My 4 year old can shred on his balance bike but is having a hard time pedaling with the coaster brake. So without the coaster, how are you teaching the youngins to slow down/stop? footjam?
Bro thank you for this video! I have like 3-4 BMX bikes and one of them had a coaster brake wheel that would thrust/jerk forward VERY violently whenever I tried to slow down under fast speeds. I took the wheel off and took it to the dining table while watching your video as I made a oil mess everywhere lol I eventually got the coaster brake tab things to end up in the garbage can and now the wheel works with no problem! 😃 Will defiently be subscribing.
What I want to know is this: how much more complicated is the operation when dealing with an IGH/coaster combo? Specifically, a 7-speed Shimano Nexus hub?
Thank you! Followed this video and successfully removed the brake. Now I might have to put some regular breaks on it. I hope this allows my son to learn to pedal better...
Hi @StackedBMX just wanted to check what you do with the brake arm that is still attached to the other side of the axle. Does it screw back on to where you took that first screw off? or did you remove it completely. Thanks
nothing will work reliable on the infamous rattling motorized bike. If you are having trouble look into heavy gauge spoked beach cruise wheels. We will try and get some on our website for you.
@@Stackedbmx was just tossing this idea around because cruisers fit those motors relatively well but they all come with stock coaster breaks, I built one awhile ago but I don’t like the idea of keeping the coaster brake this time around.
I followed instructions and when I got it together it would pedal forward too much before engaging, so i tried it again this time stretching the spring, put it back and when I tested it out, it bent up a bearing, ordered a new bearing, any thoughts on what did I wrong?
sometimes the spring is warn down or doesn't stretch enough to engage, might not have been put together correctly, that usually trashes the bearings. Maybe try putting another washer the same size as the one that touches the spring to give it extra spring.
@@Stackedbmx Thank You for getting back to me. Should you leave the brake arm on if you have multiple speed? I’m looking at some rims I want to grab for this lowrider I’m building but they have a coaster and I have a 7 speeds
Thanks for this , I've been trying to sort out how to de-coaster bikes for ages. I use them to teach kids with various disabilities how to ride and sometimes they just activate the coaster - removing it will help so many kids ride - thanks !
When we backpedal it causes the gear to unscrew from the other part inside. This causes the rider to have to pedal forward multiple times to screw it back together before the chain will advance the bike forward. What do we need to do to fix this? Thank you!
Already had to do some maintenance on mine ive got a motorized bike and the coaster break kept getting in the way. The torque from the engine and the coaster break ended up messing up my tire a bit
Did this and it worked. The problem is, after I pedal backwards, sometimes it take 1/3 to a 1/2 rotation of the crank/sprocket to engage. How can I fix that?
Hi bro. Nice video! I have a single speed with this break. But I want it to make a fixed gear. Can I just replace the freewheel sprocket with a fixed sprocket after I removed the coaster brake?
Nope. If you remove the brake, then when you backpedal, the drive system doesn't engage with the hub. Instead, it will function a lot like a single-speed freewheel. The differences are that a) if you roll the bike backwards, the pedals won't turn, and b) you won't get the click-click-click when coasting or backpedaling that most freewheel hubs have, due to the ratchet mechanism (note some freehub designs, like Shimano's 'Silent Clutch' , use a different mechanism, and don't exhibit this clicking). Also, if you have a coaster brake (ie, backpedal brake) in the hub, you won't have a freewheel mechanism in the first place; if you did, then the brake wouldn't work.
I just followed this video and rewatched a couple of times. The wheel will not engage going foward. It works as a stationary bike at this point. Any ideas what is causing this?
