  • In this video we discuss 5 facts that many people don't know about Jeweled Lacertas or Eyed lizards.
Something worth bearing in mind when keeping Jeweled Lacertas is their remarkably large size. In fact, they have been recorded to reach lengths of 90cm and weights of over 0.5kg, making them Europe’s largest mainland lacertid! One of the oldest Jeweled Lacerta was a 35 year old male who, unsurprisingly, reached just over 90cm in length! Now, don’t be alarmed as this lizard is very timid in the wild and tame in captivity, making it an ideal addition to your household!
Jeweled Lacertas are not unbeknown of some unusual habits, as their arboreal nature can attest. If an animal is arboreal or in the Jeweled Lacertas case, semi-arboreal it means they like to climb, which is particularly strange for such a large lizard. Something that goes hand in hand with arboreality is elevation, and this lizard has been known to inhabit areas up to 2100 meters above sea level! That’s almost half way up mount Kilimanjaro!
Often when you think about lizards, you picture a green medium sized creature that loves to eat bugs and insects, however while that may be true for some species and even the Jeweled Lacerta for the most part, they enjoy the vegetarian option! Jewelly’s love to eat plants like dandelions which really help them develop a stunning colouration. Along side dandelions, they love to eat a range of fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries… the list goes on!
It may surprise you that eyed lizards have a sweet tooth, but what is more startling is that humans have a taste for them too. A traditional dish in which slices of lizards are fried in olive oil known as a guisado, is popular within Extremaduran cuisine. Variations on this include entomata de lagarto which means lizard in tomato sauce, and lagarto en salsa verde, which means lizard in green sauce.
The consumption of lizards has unsurprisingly aided to their decline in the wild, along with other factors such as habitat loss, making them an IUCN Near threatened species. If their decline continues, they could risk becoming an endangered species, a truly somber reality. However, its not all bad news, as its now recognised as a European protected species, making the trapping, capture and destruction of their habitat illegal. This is especially important as they are endemic which means only found, within Europe. Captive breeding efforts will help support the conservation of this species, regenerating the populations of Jeweled Lacertas for good.

It is a contributing factor to the species decline - luckily the trapping of lizards is banned!
