    Hi. My name is Paulo and I am an amateur herpethologist since 1985, from Portugal. I really found your video very interesting about this keeping outdoors concept which is something I've been pursuing on practicing it but, unfortunetly, I don't have the necessary facilities to do that in the extent I would like to.
    Eyed Lizards are in great regression in the wild here because of great urbanization expansion, building of roads, buildings, loss of habitat and use of pesticides in my country. I fear we will loose it in the next few decades and that really makes me awfully sad, even more because it is a species I used to grow with and that I apreciate so much.
    Furthermore, captive speaking, for example, I think that one of the biggest reasons that make people like me choose to keep exotic pets instead is the fact that authorities in my country are very strict and violently punish people for keeping native species and do not encourage at all people like me to start a well endeavoured conservation own project and end up making us choose exotic species because they are already sold with legal legislation in most cases.
    It is very sad that people like me, having a 35 year old experience in herpetology and captive keeping, are kept from having a fullfilling job doing what we love and performing a very good contribution on saving our own european species.
    So, if you know anyone, any partnership like Celtic Reptiles and Amphibians, any institution with which I can contribute to in order to save this european species that I love, please let me know through my e-mail SecretsOfReptilesAndAmphibians@gmail.com. I have great experience in Eyed Lizards and other mediterranean lizard species and mediterranean amphibian species, as well. I am, also a professional web, graphic and media designer. I'm sure I will be of great help and contribution. Thank you so much.'

    It's funny that the name the American keepers use for this lizard (Jeweled Lacerta) is actually derived from the Dutch name that Bert Langerwerf used when he started to sell them. en masse in the USA. I enjoyed the video. I definately think you show the best way to keep them. But I will add two things. Firstly in such an outdoor situation you should make sure there are underground hides for both extremes of temperature. Secondly, incubation should take 3 months.. If its faster, it means the eggs are being kept too warm and the babies will be smaller and weaker.

    You guys have inspired me to start working with european species.. i have some of the eyeds indoors at the moment as its winter when i got them but is there a general rule to keeping lots of species outside such as fire bellied toads and other frogs in the winter and also snakes/lizards how do you protect them from frost.. id love a chat with you guys to see if i can help in some way.. i dont want to get a species wack it in the garden and then kill it because i watched one video .. very interesting to re populate the uk with endangered native species

    Does UV penetrate green house glass? I was under the impression that glass filters out UV.

    Lovely video, thanks. Fantastic species. How do you stop the lizards over heating in the greenhouse when we have a heatwave? Also, doesn’t the glass prevent UV?

    • @CelticRewilding
      @CelticRewilding  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks John, in order to prevent overheating, we take out roof panels in the greenhouse, as well as open the door. This also allows uv through.

    Someone please help me i know i shouldn't worry but sometimes during the day my jewelled lacerta will take random naps is this normal? Also, are their legs meant to be flimsy when they sleep because when he gets up he can pick himself up off the ground quite high which i heard is good but when he sleeps his arms go completely droopy.

    Nice video , I have a question i am currently raising a baby jeweled lacerta and want get him to be as colorful as possible what tips do you have for that regarding his diet? Thanks

    • @CelticRewilding
      @CelticRewilding  4 роки тому +1

      tyler arsenault nguyen Hi, thanks! For diet we recommend a variety, consisting of; crickets, mealworms etc. as well as you can try dandelions and berries from time to time. However, your lizard may not always be interested. Make sure to dust the food with calcium/ D3 powder. Hope this helps.

    Hey man ...I've had my JL for 3 years he's massive and a lot bigger than most I've seen so think the breeder was wrong with his age .
    I was told not to mist because it could cause respiratory problems..not saying it wrong but can you give me more info why to do it .I'm stil new and learning. Great channel man .

    • @CelticRewilding
      @CelticRewilding  2 роки тому

      Misting helps keep the animal cool and helps them shed their skin more easily. If you over mist it can cause problems so best not to do it a lot. Once or twice a day on a hot day is fine.

    What type of plants 🌱 can they have planted in there enclosure?

    • @CelticRewilding
      @CelticRewilding  4 роки тому +1

      Anything you like, we just choose to plant native species to the geographic range of the lizard. Plants like heathers, succulents, lavender and various grasses.

    but doesn't the Glass block vital UV rays? they can survive down to 0 Celsius

    • @CelticRewilding
      @CelticRewilding  3 роки тому +1

      The panels are replaced with mesh in the summer so that natural UV light can pass.

      @@CelticRewilding - That's good. If I happen to get a captive bred baby or juvenile, I want a colorful one, but if sex doesn't matter that much in color, I won't care which. Other question was can Jeweled Lacertas live together, or do they fight?

  • @ryandawson7564
    @ryandawson7564 3 роки тому

    So they can cohabit successfully? Aren't yours both males? (judging by the colour), isn't sticking two males together risky?

    • @CelticRewilding
      @CelticRewilding  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Ryan, they are a male and female. Colour isn’t an indicator for sex in timon lepidus. Two males can potentially be risky, generally a male and female together cause no issues.

    • @ryandawson7564
      @ryandawson7564 3 роки тому

      @@CelticRewilding ahh okay, I was told females were generally brown with blue spots but lacking in the green, obviously I've been mis informed. Only ones I can find in my area are brown with blue spots but can't seem to find green ones. How handleable are yours?

    • @CelticRewilding
      @CelticRewilding  3 роки тому +2

      Wild t.lepidus are bright green/yellow. Often these lizards are kept poorly in captivity and therefore never develop their natural colouration and pattern. They are notoriously shy creatures, yet we have had a very tame specimen before.
