    Hi Clint, glad to see Timon lepidus finally getting its dues! I have a six month old boy(?) who is shaping up to be very chill and absolutely awesome.
    It might be good to mention that, though prolific burrowers, they also appreciate climbing opportunities in the form of rock structures or wide branches. And the bigger the better for an enclosure- they're super active and will make use of every centimeter you provide, vertical and horizontal!

      Emma B Take at least 2 times the size (with the tail) in length, 1 time in height and width. This lizard can be up to 70 cm. So minimal size is 140x70x70 (Lxlxh)

    When I lived in Alaska I found a breeding pair at a petco for 80% they had been there as they'd been there so long. Stuck in a 20 gallon tank! So obviously I bought then and built a large maybe 150 gallon tank with 2ft of burrow space and they loved to be held, It was awesome.

  • @aurochf1
    @aurochf1 4 роки тому +38

    I did my master thesis on this species in the wild. Awesome and tough animal! I find it a bit hard to believe that air humidity is a big problem for them as they can live in pretty darn dry ares, as well as in quite humid ones (but don't take my word for granted on this, please). The only thing I truly don't think is correct in this video is the reference to snails, this species has a pretty wide diet in the wild and it does not show a particular taste (or need) for snails, some populations seem quite adapted to hard shelled beetles though, but not all, so give them a diverse diet but do not concern yourself about snails.
    About wild caught animals... I don't think any of you will come across wild caught specimens in the pet trade, but if you do, they are most certainly illegal (as it is strictly forbidden to capture them in Spain, Portugal and France).
    In my university there was one L.lepida that spent the day under a palm tree with a colony of sparrows, waiting for baby sparrows to fall down so he could prey on them, I used to throw mullberries at him, and he would eat them very happily!

      @@Chopingporky Thanks Brandon. I think they tend not to show a coloration as bright as those in the wild, I bet is probably due to insufficient lighting or UV. I watched this video when it came out and I fell absolutely in love with jeweled lacertas to where I prepared for 2 years and got one for my own. He came in as a hatchling (which surprised me he was that young) and I’ve had him and worked with him for a year and he is the best reptile anyone could ever have. I genuinely cannot believe how smart this species is! In this video Clint says they don’t typically want to be handled but weirdly mine will scratch at the glass of him terrarium and when I open it he jumps on me and wants to be pet. I’d recommend this species to anyone who can put in the affection then they’re perfect. Can’t get better!! I neeeeed more videos of these guys cause I’ve watched every single one haha

    Hi, Clint. I'm from Spain, and the jeweled lazerta is a common species in most of my country, ranging from the subtropical semideserts of the Southeast to the wet atlantic coasts of the Northwest, from rocky steppes to the mediterranean bush and even into agricultural habitats. It used to be far more abundant when I was a child, but it's still widespread. We call it "lagarto ocelado", which means "ocellated big-lizard". I personally find it amazing how calm that lizard looks in the video. Here, they are known for being very fast and agresive animals when they feel threatened. They usually run very quickly when they see people and seek shelter inside their burrows or in crevices among rocks, and also they can climb up trees if they need to (fast as squirrels). That's why I had never thought about them as pets that you can handle easily...

    Love my lacerta, he jumps on my hand when I put it in his enclosure, love the scale patterns, which vary from legs to tail to head to body to neck. Mine is a melanistic, got him as a baby more than a year ago after researching and some of Clint's videos. I chose the most chill of all his siblings not the most patterned. Started off feeding small horned worms then large ones, then superworms and now he likes large discoid roaches, always used supplement powder, won't eat anything without it, mine hates veggies and fruit though you should try berries, mine does like egg. I use cyprus and coconut husk substrate. Some aqua colored like this one in the video, but also there are greens, yellows, and the melanistic (solid black which sometimes shows the dark blue spots). By me in Florida they are not uncommon in reptile shops. Mine is a very early riser, is always out, prefers too sleep is tighter spots instead of his hides or burrowing. They are native to Spain. Males look very much like a tegu because of their stouter head. I have NEVER been bitten by him, or even threatened to as they would in wild, opening their big mouth, look for videos in Spanish from Spain if you want to see some, see a lot of the yellows in Spain. THANKS CLINT!!!

    I could not possibly love these little reptiles more if I tried! They have the most spectacular and unique personalities, and they really do remind me forcefully of my tegus in miniature 😄
    We recently had a clutch of 8 hatch and the neonates are, understandably, very shy but equally curious. After about a month of being as hands off as possible with them, I began placing my hand in their enclosures and they actually come up to my hand, crawl up, and rest on my palm. I have higher spots for climbing in their homes so that they can thermoregulate to their hearts desire, so it really seems as if they sit and stay on my hand solely out of preference and curiosity. They crawl off at their leisure, and even allow me to carefully stroke the tops of their tiny backs! Last week they began eating out of hands and tongs without fear. They will be such outstanding adults! I really need to get this on film but I'm always too excited to do so! I just adore these lizards so very much 😭

    Awesome video Clint! I have researched jeweled lacertas for several years. I was lucky enough to find a cb one from a breeder friend at a local reptile show. I have had my boy about a month and he is absolutely the best lizard ever. I have cared for numerous reptiles over the years but he is going to be a favorite. I hope more people can be introduced to these amazing animals. Had also been looking for a new hygrometer. I haven't been thrilled with other brands I have tried. I ordered one from your link to try. If I like it, I will get some more to replace other ones in room. Thanks again.

    I randomly bought one of these as a kid in like 4th grade (circa 1992-3). It was called a jeweled lizard. Pet store guy told us we needed a tiny glass bowl without a lid....the lizard bit me once and my mom made me bring it back. She 100% saved that lizard's life: horrendous husbandry guidance from the guy. Never dreamed it would turn into something so cool...

    Finally! I’m thinking of getting one in the future, and this video helps me really much. The reason I know about this from before, is that it’s one of the only 19 legal reptile species in Norway.

    • @drhexagonapus
      @drhexagonapus 3 роки тому +2

      Why is Norway so restrictive on keeping reptiles? I can't imagine there's much risk of them becoming invasive in such a cold climate.

    I used to import lots of these from Spain in the early 1970's. As I was wholesaling them, I normally didn't have any on hand for any length of time, but found them to feed voraciously on live crickets.

    I love your videos! Your by far one of my favorite reptile UA-camrs of all time. I try to watch and comment on all your videos to show my support of your channel. But I was wondering if I could give you a couple suggestions for videos in the future. First off you should do a draw my life it would be really interesting to see how he ended up getting fully immersed in the reptile hobby. Second you should do a reptile room tour because I have always wondered what animals are in your collection. You should also do a poll so your viewers could vote on what animal they want to see a video on. And lastly do you have Instagram because I will follow you. Thanks and have a great day !
