EasyThere Pilgrim the coin is worth like 30 grand, it's already cased and graded, it's a small item that won't take up much room on the shop floor. Rick could've easily gone to 27 and still made a decent profit.
Guy came back later that day, took the $26k. Went to play blackjack, ran it up to 99k. He wanted to make 100k so he ended up betting 1k on a hand, lost. And five minutes later down to the felt.
One thing I didn't like about this was that Rick made the excuse that the coin sold for a lot because of some "boom". The older the coin is, the more valuable it should be over time, whether or not there's some baseless "boom". Aside from that, I like Rick's negotiating with the customers.
That's what people fail to realize, any pawn shop is open to make money, not lose it!! I honestly believe that Rick gives his best offers, especially when something is worth tens of thousands of dollars
This coin today 2/22/2020 has a listed value of $32,500, according to PCSG. Rick has bricks and mortar and has no incentive to pay full value for the items he sells. He did his research on the net and found the true value the same way I did. He then discounted the item (coin) by set percentage and offered to purchase the coin not knowing when it would sell. Rick would also be expected by any purchaser to discount the coin, as there is no incentive, (other than expected appreciation), to pay full price for any item. If the guy sold this coin at auction it would cost him 15 to 30 percent and it could be months before he received his money. Most items sold in retail stores are marked up at least 100%, and sometimes as much as 300 to 500% or more.
Normal Person: I researched it on the internet. Rick: Yeah, but what are they actually selling for? Rick with Coin: Let me research that on the internet.
