Ariana Grande signs “Lamest Place in the World” [By Jason Robert Brown] - SINGER REACTS

This is my reaction to Ariana Grande singing “Lamest Place in the World” by Jason Robert Brown. She really uses a bright, youthful tone here, a little reserved with her mixes but we still got a lot of strength in some spots. I really love the sound she gets on this song. Ariana was definitely a musical theater singer before she was a pop star and it is nice to see some old performances of her old repertoire. I see now that this song was originally from her musical called “13.”
I am a jazz/R&B vocalist, saxophone player, music educator, and vocal coach, and this is my analysis of her voice and technique. It is always such a pleasure to make these videos for you, I realize this performance is of three songs so let me know if you’d like to see the other two! I am about to finish graduate school, so I am suuuuper busy right now but in a few weeks I should have more time to upload music and put more time and thought into this channel. I really appreciate every single one of you who continue to support me. I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t have your comments to read on every video.

I never realized how much lighter her voice was years ago. By picking up your examples in this video, I learned a bit more on how her voice has changed. The brightness of her voice was much lighter than how she performs now. However, as a trained professional, Ariana could now switch different musical styles easily. Whatever she sings she will always sound fantastic. Even though you are super busy, you still support your fans! Thanks again for a wonderful reaction video.

I enjoyed it! You do so well recreating what she does vocally; it's mesmerizing.
But that was only one of three songs she performed in that video 🥲
The first song is from the musical she made her Broadway debut in, 13, which Jason Robert Brown composed the songs for. I believe Ariana was the understudy or whatever for the role this song was for: there's a video of her singing another song from that role during the show's run (when she was like 14 years old) called "What It Means to be a Friend" if you feel like comparing her musical theatre style from then to 2016.
The second song in Frankie's video is one JRB doesn't perform anymore because it's 'too difficult to sing and play piano at the same time', so Ari sang it and popped off. And JRB is kind of known for writing songs with fiendishly difficult piano parts, so that's saying something.
The third song is also from 13, but it's performed as a duet between Ariana and Shoshana Bean.
JRB is also the Jason referenced in Ariana's "Jason's Song (I Gave It Away)". Oh, and he also wrote the musical _The Last Five Years_ from which Ariana performed "Still Hurting" for a virtual concert.

The song is written for a thirteen year old character which is why it's lighter in vocal tone. She sings is incredibly close to as-written (the "don't disappear" riff is written into the sheet music). It's not really until the bridge ("you've found the perfect guide") that she starts messing with the melody just a tad bit and adding more runs. It's interesting and makes me really respect Ariana that she sings this song (which is from a musical and tells a specific character's story) rather straightly and without "making it her own" too much. It's Patrice's song, not Ariana's. Yet, on "Getting Out," which is just off JRB's album and not tied to a specific story, she can really stretch her wings and tailor it more to her sound.

Okay I know you’ve probably got a list a mile long, but I think you’d dig her cover of Thundercat’s Them Changes. She does sing with them but this cover is in her lower register(?) which is nice
