- This is my reaction to Ariana Grande singing Jason Robert Brown’s “Getting Out.” This song is one of three from the video “Ariana Grande sings Jason Robert Brown.” I have already analyzed the first song, be sure to check it out and let me know if you’d like to see the third! As I’ve said before Ariana Grande is a very mixy singer, in this song we get to hear some of her great, powerful, high mixed belts, in addition to some very classic minor pentatonic riffs & runs. Singers could get a lot out of analyzing this interpretation, she pops in and out of registers with ease and demonstrates great mastery of blues language in her riffing. Her sound is a bit brighter, which I enjoyed, she was younger here and typically sings with some more darkness today.
I am a Jazz and R&B singer, saxophone player, and vocal coach, local to New Orleans. I have a bachelor’s degree in music education and am near finishing my master’s degree in Jazz studies. This video is my professional opinion and what I drew from listening as a singer myself. Ariana Grande is an influence of mine and I very much enjoy making these videos for yall!

Good luck on grad school! Recreating some of Ari's licks are definitely a vocal workout. It's so satisfying seeing you break down and recreate what she's doing. Also it amused me that the guitar solo didn't do it for you because same, but I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable.
Thanks for reacting! I'd love to see the next song, primarily because it's Ariana singing with Shoshana Bean, who is a vocal beast in and of herself, though she's mainly famous in musical theatre circles. Also, Tara Simon recently reacted to other vocal coaches/reactors, and how she recreates things kinda reminded me of you, so I kinda wanna see you react to Tara :D

Hi Erika, another fantastic video! I really enjoyed your analysis, I learned so much. Ariana's techniques in her use of the Pentatonic scale, cliches, riff and runs, etc. show what a great singer Ariana is, even at a young age. Ariana's vocal power and manipulation in this song showcases her elite singing level. Thank you, for your detailed breakdown of her singing, I definitely enjoyed it, especially with your voice demonstrating the technique.

This is a SUPER old Ariana video, but I recently found "Ariana Singing, "Beautiful," When She Was 14" by "osnapitzme94" in my likes.
I remember that I was hella impressed by it when I was in high school -- many, many, many years ago. When I watch it now, it strikes me how different it feels than the way she sings these days. And I'm honestly not sure if I'm crazy or not for thinking so! That's why I would LOVE to hear what you think about how her techniques have changed.
