After looking at that rusty old red block I thought to myself, "I've got and old oil filler cap, I wonder if Sledge could rebuild the rest of the engine? FFS. The state of that engine!!!! The exhaust manifold is just about rusted through. There's a rats nest between the intact manifold and block. The spark plugs are rusty, not black, not brown but red, with a bit of green. Dear Sledge you truly the the saint of hopeless causes. Good luck mate, make sure it doesn't affect your mental health. I mean really, the bells alone would do my head in. We love watching you have a go though. It's magnificent.
I just purchased a $400 Volvo body is very good no rust ,interior is even better sagging headliner but old 10ryr old gas not many made 1990 740 Volvo GLE 16 valve!

Had outrigger on passenger side welded once and lived the rest of his days in Normandy France. Had running issues in 2007 and PX him for a Toyota Corolla. Volvo was French Registered and got 2500 euro off in scrappage. While waiting for the new car he ran perfect!! Wanted him back but wouldn't let us buy him back cheap. Wouldn't have a carb B230K Again. Soon after buying fitted a new webber carb with manual choke. Really liked my first Volvo (D795RJW)
Well you know the mix of ATF and aceteone can't do miracles and in this case no one is wondering why. The head seems usable. Thanks for another good video.
Mixture is 50/50. I seen a video years ago where they did a controlled comparison between commercial products and Acetone/ AFT. The commercial products all came a dismal second. Once a cylinder or cylinders are seized with rust, it is if they are welded. I once had an engine the same. Not letting it beat me ( which it did) I stripped it down removed the. crankshaft . Had it soaking for weeks. Using a 5 lb hammer with a block of wood on top of pistons . Nothing would budge. Sometimes we have to admit defeat. Lol. At least you have well recovered your moneys worth in parts. The interior would sell for what you paid.
Now you've got the head off you could put a piece of wood on the stuck piston, and whack it with a fence post driver. I've seen it done on Restored. Bit heavy handed maybe. Whip the pistons out and give the cylinders a dingle ball hone, she'll be just like a bought one (promise!) Seriously though, that head definitely looks like it's worth saving.
Sledge takes the rocker cover off. "Oh, look how clean it is." That's because there's no bloody oil at all in the engine. What a nightmare. On the other hand, the bore can be rebored, the valves reground, new pistons and rings and it will be as good as new. Oh also it needs about 20 kilos of sheet metal welded into the rust holes. And finally, I know you'll like this Sledge, the paint work needs a polish. LOL. Go get 'em tiger.
I am amazed just how rotten it is. I can only think it either lived on the coast for it’s entire life or was actually in the sea at some point. Very odd indeed. My first V70 - a 1997 P80 - was nearly as rotten underneath- the floor pan, sills, suspension components, everything. That had lived most of it’s life on the coast in Scotland so it would make sense. The interior is a real mix of facelift 740 and early 940 - the binnacle/cluster sets are 940, as are the wiper arms. Shame about the engine but still a lot of salvageable parts at least. I didn't really see how bad cylinder 3 was, but it might be possible to just hone the cylinders and you'll be fine. You could send the block out to get the cylinders bored, but then you need oversized pistons as well. Would give you a little more volume I suppose ... It is well worth saving these engines, they are getting more and more rare ...
Admire your honest appraisal! I can't understand why the rocker arm and cams is so pristine, unless its been replaced. Enjoy the strip down - its easier when you've made the decision that its a non-runner. Thanks.

Water doesn't need to physically get poured into the bores for the engine to get shagged. Bores are not protected from corrosion in any way, so the atmospheric moisture does its job. If it sat for years in a shed, forget it, it's fucked. You can hone it, it will run, but it will consume lots of oil.

Looks like the head gasket went and it sat for a long time with coolant in that cylinder.The head itself might be useful to someone. At one time you could buy a "short" reconditioned engine if your head was OK. It seems like you bought a car for scrap metal price but mainly all you got was scrap metal!
Hi thanks for the advice on checking part numbers on scandiparts, turns out the 740 engine mount rubbers are the same part number as the gearbox mount rubbers. Thing is the gearbox rubbers are 1/3 the price! With Your two rusty Volvo's maybe You could cut patches out of the red one and weld them in the other one. Also that bonnet would be useful just for the metal. Best Wishes Dee

Yeah that's exactly the plan, the floors have one or 2 small crusty spots that can be repaired once they're out of the car, but they will be perfect considering the other 740 has basically no front floor pan once you remove my panel bonded 240 boot floor sheet metal out of it 😅 Hopefully I can get into sorting it properly this winter 🤞

What kind of state is the drive train and supporting beams in? If those are corroded to the point of no return, I'm not sure that the car is worth saving, other than the bits you can salvage from it.
Ahh bummer, yah, parts car sadly. At least the interior is sellable, hard to say on the head, injectors unknown, fuel pressure regulator unknown, pump relay/s unknown. Dunno how much storage space you have to a parts hoard. How much does it cost to haul away a car once it is stripped?
I don't know, that's what I'm worried about, in the UK someone would take it for free if not for a few £££ but here I think it will be difficult as usual, I might have to throw the cat in to sweeten the deal 😄

Never seen a Volvo that rusty.... mine has a fucked Steering Box now... the lines rusted to pieces... so I took another belt not to run the steering pump dry. But yeah no assisted steering means more gains I guess...=). But steering box is shit on this one I guess, too.. with the lines been heavily corroded? =)

That's what I thought, as I'm removing panels and trim even high up there's rust patches all through it, totally riddled

I am interested in buying all of the hardware and the brackets for the alternator mount on the intake side of the block. So, please save that, too!

Cannot save them all unfortunately. Just save what parts you can. For €300 those parts are still worth more than that. Not a total lost.
