ABANDONED Turbo Diesel Volvo 740 D24t - Will it Run and Drive?
Вставка

- Is it fair to call it "abandoned" if I'm the one that abandoned it? No matter, in this episode I make it go and explain how to get an old diesel running. There's not much that can keep a d24 from running, but being me, I still struggle a bit.
Music is Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet no. 7 in F major, Op. 59 no. 1 from the European Archive used under public domain.

As a Swede, It is illegal to not restore this beauty
Unfortunately, she's just too far gone in terms of rust. The drivetrain will be going in my 245 wagon, and many parts will be going toward the 740 wagon restoration (also jurbodiesel) from my other series. I'm thinking I might make it into a track car with an even weirder engine swap.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 looks like it has less rust than 99% of the old volvos i see around here
@@Kris-bl8zp it is doable in a weekend, it's really not that bad actually. I've had much worse Volvos than that
@Colin Liljegren I'm not sure yet, we will see. The wagon is priority.
@@Kris-bl8zp yeah, it hides it really well. It's a rust belt car. The body looks pretty decent, but the floor, trunk, and frame rails are literal swiss cheese.
I never knew I needed this guys channel until now what a legend 😂
Very much subscribed and anxiously waiting for more Volvo content.
Thanks! There will be plenty of it! Especially when I start working on my 245 you see in the video. I'll probably do a similar "will it run" video with it. It's just a boring ol redblock (for now) though.
Its like a fine wine lmfao. I catch hints of zip ply bias ply, deboss garage and a primary aftertaste of vice grip garage. Then to add the classical music in the background makes it perfect haha
Great videos! Keep up the good work, greetings from Sweden!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
Nice of you training that cat to be a mechanic.
He's quite the fast learner
Great video! Awesome camera angles and your jokes are hilarious! Definitely just subscribed and can't wait for more!
Thanks man! This was certainly a fun one to make!
Thanks for the interesting content! To stand out from other fix'em'up-youtube channels, few suggestions: Finish one project before jumping to another, even temptation to do so is big. Also consider body-mic, it pumps the audio up hugely and makes following much easier (I know it makes one extra step in post-production). Also you obviously have huge amount of detail-info, do share it with viewers. Keep it going!
Thanks for the feedback! I had already given up on "one project at a time" LONG before my ADHD diagnosis, but I did buy a wireless lapel mic. I already have a few videos started though, so it will show up at some point. I'd love to build this in a career, the traction this video is getting is promising!
“I’ve been day drinking”………”Let’s get this out on the road!” ;)
Lol, I would like to clarify that that was a joke.
D24 are kinda rare in america right? pretty cool to see one other then here in europe, looking forward to seeing more just subscribed!
Yup, we got d24s from 83-86 (I think), but The D24T was only available in 85 and '86, making them pretty uncommon. We never got the d24tic in any variant though. I will be making my own.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 I test drove two new '81 Volvo 'Diesel' models - actually fully equipped 260's - with the d24 in the summer of '81 in Winnipeg. One was a manual and the other was an automatic. So, the d24's were available back then. When the 760 was introduced as an '83 model in Feb. '82 Volvo also brought out the d24T and made it available on that model. At the time it was the fastest production model diesel on the market.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 In the UK we never had the (245/265) later 240 diesel but had the Volvo 740/760 D24TIC (Turbo Diesel Intercooler) as there was marketed and the later the 940/960 which had the same engine but with more power.
@@jaggass we also got the d24t non ic known as the td vs a tic
The single greatest UA-cam channel I have ever viewed
And obviously the very first one you have ever viewed...😄
That 740 Turbo diesel is a rare car and now that you have it going .
I love those engines. I put a D24TIC in a old tractor 2 years ago.
Черт возьми, отличное видео! Обожаю 740 и 760 вольво, своя стилистика кубизма из 80х, правда я больше по вагонам, у меня их три с такой оптикой, привет из России)
I can support Volvo "will it runs".
Men goda! 👋😘
the 6 in the 760 stands for trim level and not cylinders. The 6 actually stands for 6 cylinders up to the 200 model series. But in the 700 and 900 series it stands for the upper trim level as you can get a 740 with a 6 cylinder engine and a 760 or even a 780 with a 4 cylinder. Great video over all, I love cars and cats ❤👍😊
The volvo 760 was available with a v6 that was not sold in the 740 and the 960 had a 3 liter straight six only available in the 960 model, it was also the last rear wheel drive volvo badged as S/V90 1998
@@Leiwi and 960 also had a 2.5l variant of the 3 l straight six. Fun fact: Volvo chopped one cylinder off of the 960 3 l 6 engine to create the 2.5 l 5 cylinder that ended up in the volvo 850. 😊
@@alexanderbjork6451 did not know about how they made the 850 engine, very interesting!
D24's just keep going. The door open warning buzzer sound is familiar as i've heard it on many old Volvo buses.
Subbed! Don't know how common they are in the US, but if you need starters, the first gen Volvo V70Tdi (D5252T) starter fits bolt on!
I have never seen a 2.5 tdi over here :( really wish we had them though
What i'd do to have one of these although i am pretty content with my 940 turbobrick too.
The 740 with the usa front is just a whole different breed.
Theyre just so rare here in finland.
Wait till the Swedes like my self catches onto your channel and I believe you will grow quite quickly
It appears that has happened today!
@@bakedbeansgarage116 yes d24s are very popular in Sweden
Damn, you're a better Vice Grip Garage for me! Keep it up, I want to see you grow and be successful!
As soon as I heard “scenic route” I’m like no don’t do that! “I just got myself stuck”
In my defense; the wagon cleared the same ditch.
Dude your cat is awsome!
Great video. Love it.
Nothing but love for my Scandinavian friends, but I do not plan on selling any of the front end parts. She needs to stay complete.
good video chinch !
Thank you, daddy 😘
Good video. I love will it run videos.
cats and d24ts and that’s why I’m subscribing
Nice find, I believe that cluster is from a gasser
This is the dream for a teenager in Sweden to get their hands on.
Och KÖÖÖLA sönder så att D24:orna blir ÄNNU dyrare och ännu mer eftertraktade.
another of the "Gotta have the fiddles in the background". Enough to make me turn it off!
I am doing a D24 swap into a 740 gas and I realized I don't have the lower engine mounts and the internet isnt helping me much, I was wondering if you could give me a more detailed look at the engine mounts and possibly part numbers if possible?
Yeah man, I'm happy to help! Message me on Instagram @hooptie_20vt. Can't send photos over UA-cam.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 alright, thanks! I will message you over there tomorrow.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 I sent you a message on Instagram if you want to check it out.
Just stumbled over this video. Very nice! I’ve had several 740 and 760s with that Volkswagen D24 engine. They’re very popular here in Sweden. What state are you in? I guess they use road salt in the winter. If you decide to scrap it, both the front and rear lights are US-spec and highly sought after here in Sweden/EU.
Classic Music for a Classic Legend :D
CAT IS THE BEST PART OF THIS VIDEO!
I am the volvo guru, I have 20 D24 engines that all need rebuilt, but can't seem to interest anybody to pay me to rebuild them and convert to Diesel their 240 or 740 to diesel. burning reclaimed veggy oil and getting 40mpg sounds way better than driving a new car.
bleeding the pump.threw return ? fills the pump? ive ho estly never done that will need to.try that
I remember when doing a d24tic starter motor in -27celsius weather 🤣
Engine sounds great lovely sound
great comedie and I loved the cat. Invit it more often to your videos.
thought this was Vice Grip Garage for a second 😉
it looked like all it needed was fuel.....all the other hacking about was just........err unnecessary hacking. is the transmission the zf4hp22? they are a little weak. i think the later cars had some GM unit, i dont remember
your cat is adorable
Love that VW Diesel!
- on the music. but great videos. but feed the cat xD cant wait to next vid :)
to bad you are in the states, those front fenders looks mint, greetings from sweden
Please get some PPE, would like to see you last longer than the Volvo.
something tells me you are a fan of VGG
I felt this comment the second "chargin'-whirler meter" left my lips. Nothing but love for Derek!
Proud! Coming from a swede😊
Uh, The approved power steering fluid to use is ATF TYPE F! NEVER use the clear power steering fluid. It will ruin the pump and rack!!!!!!! Ask me how I know, as I have had to replace many power steering units due to OIL CHANGE places using the clear power steering fluid and NOT the approved fluid which is ATF type F !!!
Would you sell me the turbodiesel emblems, and fender chrome?
Just subbed! Volvo diesel! 700 series. Uh huh !
Do you sell the emblems in the grille and the back?
I love my 940, terrible car. Absolutely hallarious to drive with a welded diff and upped boost pressure
Too relatable
would you happen to have a usa front for a 740 for sale?
Was looking forward to a volvo diesel video but turned it off as soon as the music was playing whilst he was talking,I don't see the point in doing videos when your trying to talk.
Has scrapped several older volvos for parts. They used to be real cheep here in Sweden
BTW the "0" is representing sedan and "5" (745) representing station wagon.
After 20 gas Volvos I now must have one of these.
Someone has been watching Vice grip garage
Love the cat 🐈
760 doesn’t stand for 6 cylinder. Otherwise the 2.3 turbo 4 cylinder 760 would a a 6 cylinder which would’ve been amazing ❤
You could just sell this car in parts and get thousands of dollars in Sweden. Just the headlights would go for around 700$ in Sweden in that condition
Yeah, I'll be parting it out soon. The engine is coming out this weekend to go in my 245.
dude.. been watching vice grip garage much?
Never heard of Derek
4:30 not a mechanic, but doesn't shouldn't the Cat be installed between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust rather than in the battery compartment?
Typically, yes. You are not wrong, but being a USDM 1985 car, a cat wasn't t even required. This one is aftermarket.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 Ah, that explains it.
It looks like VW and it is Volkswagen diesel in that Volvo. Those were the days☺
It is. It's a Volkswagen LT (van) motor.
I love this car , I have one 👍👍
are you interested in selling the front headlights?
Buying that front, headlights
Is it for sale???
Those headlights are very expensive in sweden ;)
Sweet cat ❤
He's such a bro, I've been adopted 🖤🤍🤎
Please restore the car !!
Hey man love ur videos i was wondering if u were intrested of selling the car maybe?
where are your gloves dude? lol your poor hands!
Well at the starters cut the mozart, then this is more enjoyable to watch. 😂
"Will it run" It's an 80's Volvo diesel... yes it ill.
Haha, yeah... I was pretty sure it would run, but I was pleasantly surprised by how WELL.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 Haha true, nice job! =)
You mean 80s VW diesel...
Looks like a VW 6 cylinder turbo diesel 2.4L
There is a very good reason for that.
@@bakedbeansgarage116 Reliability ?
Would you like to sell the headlights and grill? and ship them to sweden? :D
billig frakt 🤣
@@BassBoostedSweden haha smällar man får ta 🤣
Sorry man, I want to keep this car complete at least until I decide what to do with it.
so you can sell it expensive here you mean
@@salty987 no i want one on my car and im not so interested in paying $1k for a pair of headlights
I had the same car some bastard owned it before me and jerry rigged everything to the point there was no saving it so I did the right thing and raced it on our race truck at work with a few other beater cars let's say the volvo went the longest but the d24t ran with temperature pegged almost all the time. One of the biggest problems I faced with the car was fuel system algae it was like tar and it grew fast I ran it off the original tank for while and it would have less and less power then I put a boat tank on the roof cleaned the injection pump out with some crazy chemicals to get the tar out and it ran amazing for while then somehow a trace amount in the injection pump or fuel lines or something it spread to my new tank and that's when I decided to be done with it by this point the head gasket was about gone anyway. I smashed the car up with a excavator after ripping the engine/trans out without unbolting or unhooking anything. I had a naturally aspirated d24 intake (perfect for intercooling) and the title inside the car but now its smashed would be hard to get them out. Mine was also a 4 speed with the push button overdrive
mabe to late . but youre radiadiator hawe a leak . replase and flush atf oil
The music in the back round was so annoying that i couldn't watch it. From the first minute i was like the whole video is with music? I check it and then i stop it.
That sucks lol
Its normal that d24tic trans is that shitnold zf's but its working just need more rpms
Yeah, unfortunately we only got them with the ZF in the states. I'm going to try and mate this engine to a t5 or something.
”D24 Säljes, Låga mil, Vevhusar inget och blandar inga vätskor” 🤣
U cant actually say its rusted out
Yeah, we will see in a future video. I really haven't dug into it very far. I'll see if I can get a title and go from there.
The cat 🐈 😻 🐈⬛️ 😍 🤣
my old diesel was very crankey, she refused to start if she sat longer 3 days😆
The cat wants foooooood
1984?
1985, in the states, we only had the jurbodiesel for '85 and '86
I also want one🥺
would cost like 2000 dollar in sweden haha
You mean 200?
@@leofrojd7568 haha aldrig, minst 20k för den
You selling anything?
Sorry, no, she's staying complete
@@bakedbeansgarage116 you selling any d24 parts that you have laying around?
what a beuty
Do a road trip and camp in it...
Nah, I hate leaving my house.
mini cummins
What the cat doin
Never understood why Volvo used an inferior Audi diesel instead of developing their own diesel engine. It's as if Audi looked at everything that made a Mercedes diesel good and then did none of it.
VW IDI slander will not be tolerated on my channel. These engines are rock solid.
@@bakedbeansgarage116
They are well known for high blowby/ventilating cranc gases
@@bakedbeansgarage116 The facts say otherwise. I don't like or dislike them. Their problems are well-known.
The D24TIC is the good one, improved cylinder head from factory.
@@nicostenfors5690 this is true, those heads were much more tolerant of high EGTs, wish we got them in the States!
