      Having a habit for left foot down right foot brake is great because you don't really have to cover your front brake much and you can take off of hills like it's flat when you are holding down the rear brake just enough that it doesn't go backwards. I also find the shorty levers at a setting of 3 is good. Having it all the way out makes it hard to grip and having it too close makes me not feel the friction zone as good on take off. I'm 5'275 w/o shoes. '05 R6.

    Im 192cm (6'3 - 6'4) and just to try put myself into position of short riders, i drove a bike few years ago onto a ramp to simulate extreme "tippitoes" (both feet barely touching floor). It is not pleasant feeling in Garage. And roads are not that perfect, rain, gravel, oil, bumps, pot holes.... Wow, i see how that can be a challange and something to think about and be aware before stoping, and i take it for granted because i can more than flatfoot with both feet. Sorry for bad English :)

  • @daisyw23

    I’m 4’10” with an inseam of 26”.
    If I can ride a slammed Ninja 300 that has a seat height of 28”, whoever is reading this comment and doubting yourself, YOU CAN RIDE!!!
    I’m so short I can only tip toe on one side, and I can’t reach the kick stand when I’m sitting on the bike. So to take off I have to kick the kick stand up, then hop on the bike to take off. Vice versa if I have to stop and park the bike. Gotta tell you it’s still scary sometimes, but practice makes progress😊
    Update: It’s been 3 years since I left this initial comment. The Ninja was raised back to stock height for more ground clearance, since I was planing to track it more. Due to short legs, I have to rip all the foam off the seat for me to reach the ground, and the seat height for that set up is 28.75”. I also have a R3, it’s at stock height and I left about 1” of foam on the seat, and surprisingly the seat height is also at 28.75”.

      @@Annie-uq3xi Height is a factor but inseam is the main determining factor. To find out what’s your inseam, go measure from your crotch to the floor when you’re standing straight. Mine is 26”, if yours is about the same, then you can surely ride beginner sport bikes (example: Kawasaki Ninja 300, Kawasaki Ninja 400, Yamaha R3, Honda CBR300R, Suzuki GSX 250R, etc). I will say that some lowering on the sport bikes will need to be done for my inseam to ride, either mechanically lowering it front and back, shaving the seat, or both together. As for recommendations, it really depends what type of bikes are you interested in to begin with, there are sport bikes, naked bikes, cruisers, Supermoto, dual sports, dirt, touring, etc. I’m only familiar with sport bikes, which is why all the examples I listed above are only sport bikes. Sadly, sport bikes have relatively taller seat heights, like minimum 30.7” and up, whereas cruisers such as an Indian Scouts has a much shorter 25.6” seat height. So don’t confined yourself into 1 type of motorcycles, sit on different bikes and see which one makes you feel the most comfortable and confident!😊

And I really liked cruiser bike Jawa 42 2.1 (idk if you know about it) with seat height of 765mm ( when converted into inches it's 30 inch cruiser bike). What do you think? I'm worried thinking about its 30 inch seat height. In my country, we don't get bikes below 700mm seat height like honda rebel 500. It's really hard for me.

    I had a 1978 Honda CX500 years ago and my inseam is only 28". When ever I stopped the bike where there was a low spot in the road I was in danger of losing the bike and tipping it. I rode it for quite awhile anyway, but eventually gave it to my son who is 6'-6" tall and has a 34" inseam. He did quite well with the bike. Now my grandson has the bike. It's nice to know that there are other people out there that have mastered those tall bikes. Thanks for sharing your techniques with us. Great video.

    I'm 5'4 on an R6, and I dropped it on my first ride because the road was wavy and the wheels were on high points, and under me was a low point. I dropped it at a stop sign with people all around and cars behind me as I picked it back up. I haven't dropped it since but coming to every stop I worry with this in the back of my mind. I have only had it for 2 months, so I am hoping this fear will fade. I even considered selling it because I was so demoralized because this was my dream bike, and it is so hard for me to maneuver and feel confident on. But I love it and it is fun to ride, and I'm not going to let my height crush my dreams.

    This is the kind of video ive been looking for! As a guy who is 5'5 140lbs I've never ridden any kind of motorcycle. But have been wanting to learn to ride for awhile now. But have always been concerned because of my height and weight. Wondering if I'd be able to handle a bike in general. (Of course nothing big) after seeing your video it gives me total confidence to get out there and learn to ride and find the right bike for me! THANK YOU! :)

    I'm looking into getting a Z650 because of the seat height. When I'm in my boots, it's easier to flatfoot than my Grom, which sounds odd. I think it has to do with foot peg location.

    Great vid. At 5'4" I've had a Suzuki DRZ400, didn't bother lowering it, which was like getting on a horse, on my tippy toes nonetheless, but it's all about balance and your comfort level. All you need to do is ride a lot cause you love it, get use to the bike and gain that xp. I needed a faster bike for commuting so now I have a Yamaha FZ07 plus I don't do much dirt trailing nowadays. Happy riding!

    take the MSF course, but do not take your 600 or bigger bike to the cource to take the cource. you will fail bc they are heavy. especially if you cant flat foot it. use the bike the cource offers bc they offer little 250s that are light and low the ground.

    Hi there, great video and also so nice to see some one of my height doing a video on short rider Technik's, usually it's some one of normal height telling you oh do this or that and has no idea of what its like to have to stop on a piece of road that has a massive camber or a dirty great hole right where you need to put your foot down. loved your video dude, keep up your great work.

    It’s so weird. In the Netherlands they teach you to stand on your right leg. That’s also how they examine you. If you stop on the left leg, it’s a fail. So different than how they teach it in the US

    In the Netherlands we stop and put our right foot down in our courses and exams, I am 5'4 and I also use your technique :) Except hopping of I can put the kickstand down with that thin pin that is attached to the kickstand then you can hop off without worrying about the bike dropping. I drive a gsxr-750 and I think they are slightly a bit lower but I also want to keep the ride height original and so far riding with this technique is fine.

    I remember watching this video when I was just thinking about getting a bike about 5 years ago. Im 5.4 and ride a Yamaha FZ6 with a seat hight of 31.3 inches. The first time I got on it it was intimidating because I can barely tippy toe it but now its my daily commuter, ride it in heavy south fl traffic no problem (~80 miles a day) My only regret is letting my fear of being short no letting me get on a bike a lot sooner.

  • @Scorpions2shy
    @Scorpions2shy Рік тому

    I started on the Yamaha R3. Seat height is 779mm and at 5'4" lowering the forks by 5mm made at the confidence inspiration I needed. I now bought a NC750X and shaved some foam off the seat. That should help but my husband is convinced I might struggle. I will shared this video and prove I can do it since us short people need to always prove we can do it.

    Being 5'4" at only 135lbs, I find the R6 to be too tall for my tastes. Weird thing is, the R1 sits just a bit lower, and I can get both feet on the ground with that one. I can also do a Hayabusa, but I cannot do the ZX-14.
    While the techniques here would make it possible for me to do the taller bikes, I shall chose the bikes that I can do without going to such measures.
    Sadly, if I really wanted that R1, I would have to give up my 1700 Vulcan Nomad, and I really love taking off for a week at a time, and being able to haul sufficient luggage makes that a possibility.

    • @Tremonte
      @Tremonte  7 років тому +2

      Wise decision my friend. Go with what suits your taste and feels best. With a lot of open road around here, once the R6 is rolling, it's not an issue to handle it, but you definitely don't want to be in traffic. You fatigue super fast. Happy riding!

      Best sportbike for me would be if someone squeezed a 650 twin into the 300 Ninja, and managed to keep the weight under 400lbs. Would be an insane tiny little thing.

    • @BikerDash
      @BikerDash 7 років тому

      And it is still heavier and bulkier than the 300 Ninja. I want tiny with a decent engine. If the can get the SV650 to be physically the size of the 300 Ninja, I will buy one tomorrow!

    • @MrTakdown5
      @MrTakdown5 7 років тому

      Biker Dash on some bikes, mechanics can actually set the suspension to the height and weight that suits you, because being stock they are meant for avg. height/weight which is a much stiffer ride and higher off the ground

    • @BikerDash
      @BikerDash 7 років тому

      And there are those of us who would need to have lowering links installed on a lot of bikes to get the bike low enough.

  • @eliejahgwapo8422

    last option of short people, just lower your bike, and ride with caution, cause lowering a bike can affect the overall stability of the bike, atleast you wont fall when you stop

    I share your sentiments of falling in love as soon as you sat on it. When I was looking for my first bike I sat on a z650 and knew it was great for me. I ended up buying a 390 duke since this is my first bike ever, but when I grow out of this I'll be looking on craigslist for z650s in white just like you have. Immense value, and it does many things well, but most importantly it's comfy since I like to ride around town all day on the weekends.

    Good video. I'm 5 6 and 54 years old with a bad hip and back. And I can still ride about any bike I want. I have six bikes in a scooter. My most challenging bike to ride is probably my 2007 V-Strom because it's so tall. I get on this bike by putting my left foot on the left Peg and then as I'm taking off letting the clutch out I swing my right leg over the seat it's a little tricky but with a little practice it works really well. I have a difficult time getting off a bike without putting the kicks down down first I always put the kickstand down first.

  • @justsaiyansteve
    @justsaiyansteve 7 років тому +1

    Always great to develop riding skills. But you can always lower handle bars, lowering links, shave seat, taller riding boots, and learn to dodge potholes/speedbumps. Great video explaining the shorter person hip movement.

    • @Tremonte
      @Tremonte  7 років тому +3

      Absolutely correct, but that is not always an option on some bikes. Take the R6 for instance. Lowering the bars isn't an option, lowering links would moot the point of the upgraded suspension the bike was designed with, causing a massive change in cornering telemetry. When you compress the suspension on a supersport, you effectively limit the travel of the suspension, where dampening and rebound could cause too much feedback to the rider, and a result being loss of traction. I wouldn't do this to a track ready bike. On a cruiser or less sport inspired model, definitely an option.

    Rear brake doesn't really do that much as using engine braking. I think engine braking does more but it's using the clutch lever in reverse.

    Hi, we are the same. I’m 157cm, about 5ft 2 from Malaysia. Now I have f800r, GSXR750 L1, ZXR750 J2 & NSR150RR. The most difficult for me is ZXR since the bike is heavy with 220kg wet and the sit need me to open wide my leg. By practicing frequently build my confidence especially on how to get on the bike, launch it & manoeuvre in traffic jam same as this video.

I want an R6 and have for over 15 years now and bc im a noob on a bike I dont have the confidence yet so flat footing would help me and I don't want to get like a 300 or 400 and have it for a yr and get resl board of it and lose a bunch of money when i want something bigger like a 600. Thanks love the video.

      Glad you found some use in the video. Indeed, too much front brake while turning or stopping at slow speed will cause you to lose balance. Using the rear brakes when slowly moving is the key to tight maneuvering.
