  • This has existed since at least the Anglo-Saxon period when it was traditionally thought to have been founded as a monastery or minster by St Æthelthryth. It’s listed in the Domesday Book as "Haltone". Excavations by the University of Sheffield confirmed the presence of a 7th-century settlement, the village being chosen as a case study through which to understand the organisation and development of Anglo-Saxon and late medieval settlement and cemeteries in this area of North Lincolnshire.
It found village had a medieval manorial complex, abandoned at some point in the later medieval or early post-medieval period. A variety of prehistoric finds and features were identified around the parish too. Ring ditches were identified from cropmarks at several locations. As for the name it translates to "farmstead in a nook or corner of land".
The Primitive Methodists built a chapel here in 1877. Currently the Antiochian Orthodox have a chapel here according to my sources, placing it at Manor Farm close to Coleby. A parish school was built here in 1856 and by 1871 was schooling about 20 children. These days children attend school in the other nearby villages like Winteringham
Speaking of Winteringham, this is similar in that it also had a railway station, built in 1906 by the North Lindsey Light Railway on its line from Scunthorpe to Whitton. The station was opened in 1906, the line then being extended to Winteringham Haven in 1907. Passenger services consisted of three trains each way between Scunthorpe and Winteringham. The station closed in 1925.
We’ve seen East Halton already, this is that village’s Westerly brother. This is WEST HALTON.

One of the houses you showed near the beginning with the post box was the old post office and the village hall was the old school which my dad went to.
