  • Deriving its name from forming a ness or promontory in the River Trent, this is much changed from the settlement that stood here in the 1800s. The earliest map of a scale large enough to show important landmarks like churches, farms and windmills dates to 1887, when the village name was Gunhouse.
Of course in those days, it was more about agriculture than anything else. The soil was alluvial with the chief crops being wheat, clover, oats and potatoes. Henry Wall was lord of the manor, and he together with John Housham were the principal landowners, but there were also many small landowners too. There was a wharf and a jetty for the shipment of iron ore and that wharf still exists today.
At Neap, or Neap House just to the North was a staithe or landing place on the river Trent, for farm produce. Neap House Road is the name of the road leading North parallel to the the bank of the river. The village now is heavily industrial at its Southern end around the A18 and the massive Keadby Bridge. Its location on the River Trent has always been an important one for river traffic heading towards the Humber and out into the North Sea
Specialising in steel, forest products and dry bulk cargo, Grove Port is the UK’s market leader for handling long steel products. It’s ideally located just three miles from the UK’s motorway network with sea access via the Humber Estuary.Covering 190 acres, the port is a leading import terminal for long steel products, acting as a handler, stockholder and distributor for some of the UK’s major steel suppliers. It’s no surprise that Scunthorpe steelworks is so close to this!
Speaking of Iron…look out for an appearance from a certain Football League club! This is GUNNESS.

    GUNNESS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - As well as the ness or promontory which Gunness takes it's name from, the "Gun" part of it's name is formed from "Gunhouse". There were gun emplacements along this part of the Trent in the early 18th Century, hence the Gunhouse name
    - The new church of St. Barnabas was opened in 1952. The origin St. Barnabas was opened in 1649. The consecration stone for the original church is at the front of the new church.
    - The remains of the old church are in Old Village Street.
    - There were three Methodist Chapels in Gunness. The one not mentioned was also in Old Village Street almost opposite the old St. Barnabas Church

Wow that bridge! Funnily enough it's changed remarkably little since I was a youngster. Recognised the road as soon as you passed the intersection for the motorway all the way through Gunness and to Keadby bridge. Coming back with dad, mam and granddad from Cleethorpes. Must have been the 1960s. Yes, a rail and road bridge combined.

Went to school for a while at Glanford Park, had no idea that area was technically in Gunness. I think you could ask most who live here what they think and very few would get that right.

I rode through Gunness twice last year, and that spot @6 22 is we're I stop for rest, (upload on my channel) over that bridge is an experience with the pathways partly being undercover at the north side if I remember right, a surprisingly hilly 72 mile route from my house and back thru sunny Goole.

Those pathways are scary! Next week, I venture onto the bridge in the Keadby with Althorpe episode. They move due to traffic going over it!

I went to Gunness a few times in the late 80s early 90s. My dad used to work for the Coalite, at Bolsover, and he regularly used to drive up to Gunness to sample the quality of the Coalite products that were being shipped to Norway etc via Gunness wharf. I used to accompany him on the drive during the school holidays so became quite familiar with the area. These days my journeys to Gunness are purely to Glanford Park, and that's not been for a few years with us being in non league, perhaps next season that could change depending on the outcome of this season. Interestingly we have always pronounced Keadby "Keyed-be" as it's spelt, but that comes back to the local dialect and us not being from the area 😁

Always good to see someone who's not from the area who has a connection :D
Yes could well be a non league team next year. Hoping not even as an Imp

@@TheVillageIdiot we've been down here in non league 4 years now, it's easy to get into non league, especially when the club isn't healthy off the field, but it's a nightmare to get promoted again, we've had a really good season, but we keep suffering with up to 12 players out injured and recently its been affecting results just when other clubs have improved. Been to Sincil Bank a few times also, you're having a really good spell currently, if either of our teams are in the 3rd tier we're doing well.
Burringham rings a bell too, I reckon that's where we used to go for fish and chips 😁

      Thanks Kathleen!
Did I put the date in the video for St Barnabas? I'm sure I wrote it down when I was making this one.
No matter if not, this'll go in the additional info anyway.
