I just bought two sizes, while looking at the video of the slit I notice the slit is longer then 1/4 inch. Why is that?

This is so you can cut with a rotary cutter. If you use a marker/pencil to mark, make sure you don't cut to or past the 1/4 inch.

Do I need to remove the paper backing from the templates? If so, how? Thanks.

Using a pin/needle, you can lift up one of the edges of the paper backing and then peel the rest off. 😀
