Depending on who you listen to, Apple is either in the fight of their lives to preserve the company culture, the culture that created everything from the iMac to the iPod to the iPhone to… you get the idea
Or, they’re busy screwing up return-to-work so badly that there may soon be no company left to culture, at least in any meaningful way
As usual, a ton of the coverage is sensationalized, because absolutely everyone is compelled to have an opinion on absolutely everything, loudly and immediately. Like me, obviously. But let's see if we can’t just add a slice of nuance to this discussion

I was an apple on site engineer for Sysco systems back in 1995 and 1996 and went to the real developer conferences that lasted for a week. Not 2 days or 1 day. it was still great even though Steve wasn't there.

Some of the resistance to working from home is coming from lower-level managers. Working from home provides the opportunity to prove to HR & upper management that you don’t need to be supervised & motivated to be productive. That’s not good for lower management who often justify their jobs by convincing the execs that if it wasn’t for their micro-managing everything that the business would fail.

    • @JeffandLeslie
      @JeffandLeslie 2 роки тому +11

It goes a little deeper than this although your point is part of it. Another part is to justify the office space. Work from Home (WFH) took hold in the 1990s when many companies had more "butts than chairs" and WFH was an option to not have to invest in more office space. The "hoteling" concept was born out of this where a person no longer had assigned office or cubicle space but would grab an empty desk on those days they needed to be in the office for a meeting or project. Over 30 years of downsizing, outsourcing, and offshoring, now many companies have more chairs than butts. A robust WFH environment means unused office space. Companies have millions to hundreds of millions invested in beautiful office space that is unused. They are heating/cooling it, paying taxes on it and maintaining it. It makes no sense to allow it to sit fallow so they are faced with either filling the empty seats with butts or dump the office space. Unfortunately, nobody is buying office space. COVID accelerated this dilemma but it was happening anyway. One solution is to strongly discourage WFH arrangements and tell workers they need to collaborate more 'in the office'. I was eligible for an early retirement and chose to retire rather than be forced to come to an office environment everyday. Now I'm a wildlife and nature photographer and like the views afforded by my "new office" a whole lot more.

@@JeffandLeslie this is clearly an important part and I would think also especially relevant for Apple. Fortunately I work for a smaller company (compared to Apple) and all of our offices are rented. This could actually go to the other direction where they might say there are not enough people coming to the office and we will close it completely which would surely also issues to peoples who can’t or don’t want to WFH. For myself I find a hybrid model better but would be ok with WFH-only as well.

The problems that Apple has, other companies have. People are getting older, younger workers try not to emulate their older peers that said they wished they didn't work as much and enjoy life a little bit more. Time have changed and companies need to adjust to this new reality. We also do not feel as much "vibe" as much as we did when something new came our way. Time to reconnect physically with people!

Apple no longer innovates and is years behind in basic software features on their phones compared to android. As well their computers are severely overpriced and lack basic features you can have on pc.
If you accidently hit the side button you turn off your phone during a phone call. No way around to stop that.
If you want to scroll in landscape mode in youtube then watch a video in landscape, you can't do that in IOS.
You can't customize the IOS launch button and IOS doesn't have a back button.
You can't organize your home page how you would like.
Siri will not automatically open a web page will full results, you will have to scroll down to that option to get more than her top 5 or 7.
You can't play hardly any video games on a mac or IOS compared to pc.
It's almost as if Apple fans like yourself have never used an android phone or a pc to notice the issues. Sure the hardware design is nice, compact and you don't have to think what to buy because you only by Apple but that is really it unless you are an art or music producer.

Rene, I appreciate all your videos including this one although I don’t agree with all your remarks. Let’s take a step back: closed offices vs open space or working from home or office are in my humble view only some symptoms. The main issues/challenges for the future are more holistic then physical location. I admire Apple for the way they take their social responsibility, how they manage their incredible global power in a tell) fair way. Especially compared to some other big tech (social media) companies that blatantly abuse private information. To maintain that plus maintain the ability to innovate (like you rightfully said, not repeat next iphone iteration) is the real challenge. And I have very faith that Tim + team will honor that.

Apple seems to be miffed that they spent $5B with a capital 'B' on that new Apple Park campus and few wish to return to work. They hadn't even moved everyone into the building pre-pandemic. Apple isn't the only one struggling to return to traditional office work. Employee surveys from office workforces are clearly stating that people have adapted to remote working and they simply do not wish to return to the 9 to 5 daily grind including the painful commute. Many have learned to balance work and personal life and adopted flex-time and find they have a lot more personal time. They also find they have been more productive working at home in a quiet comfortable environment. Many companies have witnessed a marked improvement in productivity. The workers don't want to go back to the way things were. If they do, it would be on a part-time hybrid basis for human contact and collaboration face-to-face reasons. Companies are re-evaluating their real estate, many have reduced their foot prints and are now recruiting from anywhere instead of core cities where the talent used to be found.

I can understand a lifestyle decision like that for a wealthy mid-life top grader and respect his choice, be for family or to avoid the waste of traveling every day. However, the youth market should be jumping to get back to the office, to show off their talent and become that middle aged professional that can then choose to WFH. It looks like businesses will have to draw up contracts and get in those that want to participate in an office environment and that should solve the issue. Those that want to WFH can leave and work for someone that accepts that and new talent can take up the challenge. A good social experiment to see where we land in 5-10 years time?

Just look at all the investment banks today, all their flashy new bankers leaving in less than a year cause there's tons of new opportunities with flexible times and pay in private equity, hedge funds etc. The old work culture simply does not cut it no matter how well IBs pay.
There's the added advantage that you could potentially do more than 1 job of the same type if you are smart enough which substantially improves your income.
People have changed, no one is interested in slaving away their lives plus in the past, even low end jobs could pay for loans, family, housing etc unlike today where even being married with 6 jobs(low end) between them won't cut it.

There are benefits to working from home for society at large. Less traffic, easier parking, cheaper gas. I drove for Doordash before and during the pandemic, gas and traffic were far better during. The excess office space should be turned into housing. That’s where the demand is. Remote work will ease housing costs (and therefore help homelessness) in cities. Large coastal cities used to be affordable places to live.

I’m sure Apple has challenges … just like every tech company in existence.
However, based on their products and services, I’d say they have significantly less to worry about than pretty much every other tech company out there.
With respect, I think you focus too much on the geek rants instead of the overwhelming customer base of “good ol’ users”, similar in theme to another post you’ve made recently.
Companies evolve or die. It’s a fundamental fact of life. If someone comes along and out does Apple, so be it. Us “good ol’ users” will adjust. So will the geeks.
If Apple chokes, I’ll buy a Pixel phone and a good Chromebook, or whatever is the best products for the best price.
To leave with a logical thought, I seriously doubt they will be Microsoft products, as they were the last company at the top of the hill. Quite possibly, the next “Apple” hasn’t even started yet.

  • @rhard007

Rene, you can talk about culture and legacy all you want but at the end of the day, it comes down to innovated ideals and execution and compensation. Most people, myself include after the first 3 years the fairy tale is over in tech and all you want is salary and stock options. There is no loyalty from employers these days so companies can't expect loyalty from employees. If I can get a high salary + stock options, and don't have to live or commute to the Valley then I am going to take that choice each time. The Valley is full of inflated real estate due to a few politicians making it impossible to build any new construction, the commute is sickening, and people realized that hey, I can go buy a 3000 sqft home in Sacramento for 600,000 dollars instead of 1100 sqft home for 1,500,000 and not have to deal with the traffic. On the tech side, Apple doesn't have a visionary leader anymore.Tim is great at managing the company squeezing everything dollar out of every product but the Iphone as much as all smart phones have peaked. A new camera every release or making it slimmer is all there is to look forward to. All of their product line, even their computer really have no upside potential, I mean, how many cores are you going to connect before you realize that there is no reason to upgrade anymore. So Apple needs to spin off their computer business, their phone business and focus solely on developing a new operating system, and software applications like games, engineering applications, educational apps to take the company to the next level of profitability

This is such a blind, braindead stance by Apple. Companies could get away with this in the past, when nearly all companies were just as shortsighted, but those days are gone. Plenty of companies have realised they can thrive when their employees are out of sight, away from the constant distractions and over-stimulation of a busy, noisy, open-plan office. At the same time, employees are starting to realise that while some of them thrive in the office, surrounded by colleagues, they don't necessarily want it ALL the time - they've got used to the flexibility and everything which comes from working remotely. Then there are all those people who realised they hate working in an office, who thrive in solitude, peace and quiet.
In taking this stance, there will be people who Apple really want to hire, who won't even bother applying for such a draconian position. On top of that, there will be the constant albeit gradual brain-drain as people leave and move to more flexible working conditions. Apple might get away with it for a while, along with the other big-name companies which look really good on a CV, but most lesser companies would have to be insane to follow them.
Sorry Apple, but it turns out that new office was bad money - don't throw good money after it. Cut your losses and let your staff work remotely whenever possible. That's how you'll keep/attract top talent in the long run.

@@TheHuxely that might be true. However we are talking about IT and software related jobs. The company I work has 3000 employees worldwide all of which can work remotely. We were just asked what we prefer. And I think that’s the right way. I can understand that hardware guys or software that is close to hardware needs to be in the office as you just might need equipment, etc. and I also see the general benefit of informal exchange between colleagues in an office which is often lacking when you work remotely. Still I think that for work where this is possible it should be the personal choice of the employee.
Often it feels that companies just use lame excuses to force people to come to the office because they own the real estate or have long rental contracts etc. And that is what annoys employees.

I hate to say all businesses need alternative suppliers in case the unforeseen catastrophe happens. Which makes it impossible to have control over manufacturing any products. There is more control and cheaper if the supplier and manufacturer of the components are locally made (in the same country U.S.). It cost more to load items on a ship, transport, unload the cargo, transport to stores. Also, uses more fossil fuel.

Yeah, times have been tough recently, but they've been tough before.
So far everything looks golden to me. New and different is what Apple is all about.
As with the United States, Apple's strength is in its diversity.

While there is a modicum of clickbate in the title, Microsoft, Oracle, and others constantly go through this. There needs to be some re-education of the upper management to give them different perspective.
Work from (Wherever) is a reality and it's not going to change. Neither are high fuel prices.

Its true Rene, most all tech corps have a distinct culture, changing over time, based on the circumstances of the day. Case in point, I was at IBM during it's Nasa-like days, when it was exciting: robotic arm development, ATM development, printers that included graphics and typography, and of course personal computers. But in the 90s, all that excitement had vanished, and it was all just endless updates to slow failing products. IBM became just an employer of cogs for the wheels, grinding one down until retirement. I don't know if this will be the way of Apple, but I suspect history repeats...

Apple really needs young people who also listens to other young people and content creators, iPhones are oversimplificated and outdated and lacking so many things because guys at the age of Tim cook and Craig couldn't care less about not having splitscreen multitasking or a simple ringtone maker, or the lack of FLAC support or a pause button for video, which young people do care. it doesn't matter to them so they don't bother themselves to add these stuff to iPhones despite the fact that it's been *years* that people are starving for such simple necessary options, which is why they need to use young people's opinions if they want to elevate not just iPhone but all they products to a new level.

First off : i am a mac book pro 15 inch mid 2014 owner and an Iphone XR owner and i love them ! BUT :
Apple needs to be taught a lesson and that lesson needs to be taught soon !!!
People need to stop buying demonic Apple products for 1 year or maybe 2. Straight , no macs , iphones , heck , no adapters nothing!!!!
    Let me Explain :
i love using logic pro BUT!!! they soldered the SSD onto the motherboard ever since 2016. I recently went to an apple certified repair shop and asked them : what if i get a m1pro macbook pro and as soon as the warranty expires , the ssd fails me . How do u go about repairing it ? They said it ll cost me a hefty sum cause they replace the whole board . I was like WhAT ? Like dayum , replace 5-6-7 parts just cause one don’t work , there ain’t nuthin logical about that . Another point is : on windows : 1tb ssd --> roughly 110$/€ . 2 tb --> roughly 2x 110 $/€ . @demonic-apple --> 2tb costs 800$ …?!?! What ? And you can t even replace it . I have a dream : :” that for 1 year straight up nobody buys any apple products , not even an adapter . Let s see those execs shit their pants and start asking questions like : oh my … what are we doing wrong ? To me they seem like money hungry apes that can not quench their thirst for money . It walks along the lines of unethical . There s isn’t even any real advantage to having the ssd soldered. I ve heard people say that it s faster . No it s not . We have the internet . Anybody can check the numbers and the speeds of different ssd s out there. Oh and just to put the cherry on top : iphone 13 : amazing processor and hardware but it s rocking the lightning port 🤣 usb 2.0 speeds . Apple 🍎 i really hope u get yours and the EU puts you in place with regulations on ports and on right to repair . They got hundreds of billions offshore like liquidities …. This got outta pocket a long time ago … out of their consumers pockets to be exact. They answer to no one and lack moral discernment . Take care y’all 😃🙏🏻🤗. But the processors are amazing and I respect the integration of the cpu and gpu and RAM 🐏 . Cause that actually wields a big boost in performance. I hope somebody serves them good .. money hungry apes 🦧
And now they ship different iPhones with different chips. oh my God bruh... let's start this movement ... i m begging y'all let us all stop buying their products for 1 Year :)))))) it would be amazing

I think no matter how revolutionary the corporate culture is, factors which retains employees are important.

‘Completely sensationalize’. Like your video headline. Most of this can be applied to all giant tech companies. Likely no different at Microsoft, Samsung, IBM and so on and so on. I do agree far too many corporations of all types are overloaded with really bad management at all levels. Too bad that is a problem that will never be solved. Look at how many really bad CEO’s that virtually destroy a company with bad performance are able to get a golden parachute and leave only to bounce into another CEO role and start all over.

The real issue is the declining value. Prices rise and rise and rise and less and less is being offered in return for our money. iPhone is the worst offender, but anything above the base model across the board is where you really see it. Consider a base iMac vs the cheapest iPhone Pro Max. The entire 4k 24” screen and the M1 computer with more storage and RAM with that huge aluminium chassis, plus a mouse and a keyboard is the same price as a phone? Clearly the phone is chronically overpriced

I guess I missed the main point. Is it that Apple must change? If so, OK, Apple is continually changing. The new generations don’t work in the same way as the past. Diversity vs quality has become more important at Apple and others instead of just hiring the best. Lack of loyalty has changed greatly. The job market has changed. Apple becoming more of a service company than product company. “One more thing” has gone by the way side. So many things continue to change. One thing that will not change is the need for “artists” to create the next best thing. Apple needs these people more than ever. How do you get to this environment is their biggest challenge.
