Greek cuisine is one of my faves. during a longer stay eventually the restaurants learnt my tastes and would bring out food for me to try and sometimes i had to pinch myself to remember i was still on Earth; amazingly good! i recreate some dishes at home and recall fond memories about the Greek people i met there.
For all the objectors out there: Mousaka Greek version was created by Nikolaos Tselementes in the late 20s and its original version comes from the Arabs with different ingredients. The mousaka, as we know it, is a completely Greek recipe. The turks have nothing to do with it, along with most of the recipes that took from the Byzantines and specifically the Greeks living in Minor Asia. Why? Simply because as nomads, they didnt have most of the ingredients needed. Don't be fooled by the names with turkish origin. For most of them there is a Greek word before the turkish one. i.e. Baklava = γάστριν (gastrin) Ancient Greek or κοπτή (kopti) Byzantines.
As a Greek, I appreciate your eagerness in trying all the delicious (albeit well-known & touristy) foods - and your great effort in pronouncing everything pretty much correctly! I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself :)

+dimiou13 it's not "turkish" per se, it was actually "invented" by the Greeks that lived in the area that now is west turkey, so Istanbul (Konstantinopoli), Ismir (Smyrna) etc etc. Those ppl were forced to leave and go to mainland Greece in 1922, the coffee remained both in Turkey and in Greece and Turks were (as everyone) quicker than Greeks to claim the patent! :) Some Greeks call it "turkish" (which has actually a degrading tone) just cause the Greeks coming from Turkey brought it to mainland!

Gods' Restaurant at Acropolis next to Acropolis' Museum is by far the best downtown Athens. Locals eat there. Not only tourists. Whenever i go with friends or family i never regret. Great family restaurant. Nice that i saw it in this video...

All the tourists make the same mistake. When you want to eat gyro just say One pie chicken gyro or pork chop(idk how its called in english)gyro and then you say what you want it to have inside. For example, One pie chicken gyro with fries and sauce.(my personal favorite) Sorry for my english

Some Greek foods not mentioned in this video that should definitely be tried are: Keftedes (greek meatballs) not much to say, there are so many variations of this dish. Most are fried. Avgolemono (egg lemon soup) also has rice in it and many variations are light and fluffy. Pastitsio (baked pasta) is a lot like baked ziti only special variations have a flour-based white sauce instead of tomato sauce, which is seen in most variations Yemista (stuffed bell-peppers) baked peppers (or tomatoes) stuffed with meat and rice filling (similar to dolmades filling) Kourabiedes (powdered sugar cookies) these are similar to Russian tea cakes. They are usually crescent-shaped instead of ball-shaped and can have walnuts or pistachios in them. They literally melt in your mouth. Koulourakia (buttery twist cookies) My favorite variation of these have orange zest and sesame seeds on top. They are butter-based twist-shaped cookies that are usually not too sweet.

Actually a lot of Greeks soak Loukoumades in honey and then pour Merenda on it (which is similar to Nutella) and it tastes amazing.

The gyros with all this stuff,but with the larger pita we call it souvlaki.Baklava is tourkish but we also make it.Mousaka has vegetables but instead of vegetables you can find it with spaghetti,this is called pastitsio

Some Greek foods not mentioned in this video that should definitely be tried are:
Keftedes (greek meatballs) not much to say, there are so many variations of this dish. Most are fried.
Avgolemono (egg lemon soup) also has rice in it and many variations are light and fluffy.
Pastitsio (baked pasta) is a lot like baked ziti only special variations have a flour-based white sauce instead of tomato sauce, which is seen in most variations
Yemista (stuffed bell-peppers) baked peppers (or tomatoes) stuffed with meat and rice filling (similar to dolmades filling)
Kourabiedes (powdered sugar cookies) these are similar to Russian tea cakes. They are usually crescent-shaped instead of ball-shaped and can have walnuts or pistachios in them. They literally melt in your mouth.
Koulourakia (buttery twist cookies) My favorite variation of these have orange zest and sesame seeds on top. They are butter-based twist-shaped cookies that are usually not too sweet.

uere in greece we have alot of tasty foods like bougatsa, pastitsio, galaktoburiko( its like milk cream pie),fasolada and alot of driks like ouzo , tsipouro, raki and many more. if anyone comes to greece you should try these foods too :3
