    This is the show where Paul Simon came to see her, was standing next to the cameraman.... Intimidating her! ;-) Paul then went to her next show in NYC and they went on their first date right before her set.
    Side note:: I saw Edie Brickell back in ~1989 in Raleigh, NC at The Rialto, shortly after "Shooting Rubber Bands at the Moon" came out. Before the show my friends and I stopped at the gas station across the street from the Rialto to get "something fun" for the show. We of course got a bag of balloons, and some rubber bands, but the best was our purchase of a few kids soap-bubble solution + bubble wands. The bubbles were the second star of that show (after Edie, of course). We were right up front (I don't even think there were "bouncers" up front at this show) and were able to blow them all around her . She loved it, and was popping them and smiling as she sang... Such an amazing show and evening --- I'll never forget that night.

    I remember this time in music. Hair bands were on the way out and it would still be four years until Nirvana. A few bands kept me going through that time and this was one of them. This was sweet because the New Bohemians are from my hometown.

      After this, "music programming" became a different thing. '92 is when they decided to start telling us, "You will like rap and grunge now... because that's all you're going to get. And if you don't like it, we'll make sure people believe you're not worthy of friends and lovers." Look up a song called 'No way, no way' by Vanilla. That was a hit. And that's because two record companies had a bet to see who would have a bigger hit with the worst song ever. Think about that.

    • @ibuprofenPill
      @ibuprofenPill 3 роки тому +2

      @@TheKitchenerLeslie I liked the grunge era because I grew very wary and disappointed with the hair band, glam rock thing. Back in the day I loved Motley Crue, and really wished they would ditch their image in favor of something more subtle and down to Earth. Make it all about the music. Not only them, but several bands I liked. I was done watching guys who dressed like women on stage. Grunge offered a welcome change in music for me. No one programmed me to like anything. If I didn’t like it, I’d let you know. Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Candlebox and Bush were among my favs. It was a great time to be young.

      You're not wrong. I grew up loving her stuff...and her if we're being honest, and you're right-"goofy" is the perfect descriptor. I love Letterman, too, stumbling upon this is remarkably gratifying.

      It's because art has been treated like it has no importance. People listen to music on their phone and the full impact is missing. The perception that everything amazing has been done so we wave goodbye to the idea of anything on the level of brilliance because the bar is too high for a new artist to reach. People will settle for the current successful bands and think this is as good as music is going to get. No inspiration and desperate for the fame part is not going to turn you into a musical genius. In the 70's there were famous musicians were deeply inspired by The Beatles and Bob Dylan and added their own level of creativity in terms of songwriting and production. You are right, time changes but there is always great music going on old and new. Don't rely on a prick in a suit for recommendations.

    So nice to find this performance, I always remember her as being very free spirited and natural. Her impromptu performance in a Dallas bar led to a singing career which must have been related to meeting Paul Simon. So nice to see them perform a song on a special some years back and walk hand in hand off stage, nice couple energy. And now their daughter has performed that Father and Daughter song with her dad. Very cool.

    I love how you can hear that the VHS needs auto tracking!! I hate the 80's but on the other hand I love so much about them! Including me, I was born in 82! Great tune, thanks for posting! I know it's 90...but this is so close! LOL
