seejanedrill So Leah I have a question. With all of these new brushless power tools coming out is it better to buy those or stick with a brushed kind? Are the brushless going to last forever or is it just a way for manufacturers to keep you from replacing brushes and keeping a tool for 10+ years and them losing money? Thanks for the input.

    • @adama1294
      @adama1294 5 років тому +5

@@nathanreed3302 : The brushless have more power, use less electricity and last longer. They cost a lot more though so you get to decide if it is worth it.

@@adama1294 brushed usually have more torque. And Brushless usually have more speed or RPMS. And yes there is a difference. I personally like brushed because you can replace brushes yourself. And brushless motors have computer chip that's expensive to replace. And requires more skilled hands.

BRUSHES are a Power Tools "BRAKES"
If your tool does not stop spinning when you let go of the trigger that's the first sign your brushes are bad
If there are sparks shooting out when you pull or let go of the trigger that's the second sign that your brushes are bad
If you have a lack of power that's another sign that your brushes could be bad

This may have been said already, unplug the power prior to looking at the brushes.
    Some more indicators:
Is the tool getting hotter than usual?
Do you see the blueish arcing when in use?
Do you smell ozone (electric motor smell)?
Many, many vacuum cleaners being tossed out just need new brushes.

This woman needs bombarded with sponsors.. most all of the other youtube channels I see or watch are for people who already do some kind of wood working or metal working, leah is introducing this industry to new people, so why wouldn't sponsors want to advertise here?? Rather than competing with people who already have their fav brands, their is the opportunity to make all kinds of new customers right here, not to mention, the benifits that leah would get from having a bunch of sponsors. . Not that she needs them but hey, I don't need 3m to sponsor me, but I'd sure love to have an unlimited supply of tape.. no what I mean vern??

    • @tomswinburn1778
      @tomswinburn1778 6 років тому +7

It occurs to me that Leah is of a different era. I expect she'd balk at being sponsored by anyone whose products she didn't ACTUALLY believe in. There are a few people with that kind of integrity still around. It may make it harder for her to get sponsors. On the flip side her subscribers are the kind that will buy what she recommends. In my trade (retired) there IS no manufacturer of equipment today I'd recommend over any other. Thay ALL cut corners and make inferior products. Some have been at it a long time and in the past were companies with pride and integrity. Today they're all (in my opinion) crooks. No matter who makes it you're getting the same piece of garbage wearing a different skin. But not ALL companies and industries have fallen into that morass. I hope Leah gets hooked up with some good folks and expands her channel. She's a gold mine for DIYers, newbies in the trades and others, old goats like me who enjoy good work.

    Thanks for another great video.
We use foam cutting saws, at work. I've had to change their brushes, several times. Characteristically, I've found if the brushes are wearing out, the saws usually start making a clacking sound or they start and stop intermittently. Sometimes they just won't start at all.
Changing their brushes is quite tricky, because we have to take the entire plastic housing off. The brushes connect the same as usual, but they have a spring that's not held in a sleeve. If I'm not careful, the spring can go flying out, and it's really difficult to re-locate into position. Last time it took about ten minutes just to re-install the spring, before installing the new brush.

I assumed with it being so easy the price would be prohibitive for the brushes. Pleasantly surprised how cheap and readily available they are. I never thought I'd look forward to a broken power tool. Now I plan to head out to the flea market and some yard sales this weekend and see if I can find some tools that aren't working. And if it's raining I'll just use my Rite in the Rain products (I've been using them for years because I hike and backpack quite a bit and they're invaluable).
I've been spending more on brushless tools lately and now I regret it :)

Yet another great video for novices and tradesmen alike. As a retired mechanic and someone who started woodworking with Dad at age 8 or 9, I've always repaired repaired my power tools if repairable. I've bought or mostly been given many power tools at yard sales that dont work well or at all anymore. A quick brush replacement costing next to nothing, and most times away they go for several more years. When power tools come with a spare set of brushes, I immediately write on the little bag which tool they're for and I store all my spare brushes in a multi-drawer organizer onthe workbench, so I always know where they are. If the tool instructions have a parts diagram, I'll try to remember to write the brush part no. on the bag too.

Hi Leah. Want to save more money and/ or time?
I was in the electronic repair business for +30 years. Here is a tip you can use in a pinch...
First, the length of the brush is sufficient to prevent it from toggling or wobbling inside the brush holder. But as the length shortens and gets closer to the brush holder's internal dimensions it WILL begin to wobble with the rotor friction.
Let's call the gqp between the brush holder and the rotor a 'pinch-point'. Foreign objects can wedge between them and inhibit the rotor's rotation.
Well, as the brush wears down, one side begins to wear to a point. This is the trailing edge. Enough wear and wobbling can cause this pointed end to 'jam' into the pinch-point and lock up the rotor.
When you remove the brush, pay close attention to the orientation of the sharp pointed edge. Rotate the brush 180 degrees and reinstall it.
Now manually rotate the rotor a few times to help reseat it. It should now work when power is reapplied. You may even have to manually assist when applying power, at first.
I've done this to my coffee grinder, a blood centrifuge and a few other devices. Got me out of a few binds to last long enough to source and purchase replacement brushes.
    Hope this helps.

Great tip! you can take it one step further and by laying some fine grit sand paper or emory cloth on the commutator working and back and forth to "dress" the brush to the correct radius also remove excess carbon dust with an old paint brush or compressed air

I had left out my circular saw out in the rain once. A few days later it wouldn't work the same way unless I banged it with a hammer while pulling the trigger. I decided to take it apart and clean the brushes and commutator (shaft) with a fine sandpaper and voila! It worked like new after that. I think sometimes the combination of moisture and debris/dust can cause build up that affects the effectiveness of the brushes rubbing against the commutator (shaft).
    Best!

That is a thing to know, believe me.
Once upon a time I learn their existence and learn how to replace them, first on a lawnmower and then on powertools in the shop. But, it happen on a cheap tool I had, I wasn't able to find the correct setting for my tool brushes, model discontinued, parts unavailable... Had to buy a new one.
That last one was of better quality, and it was a step in the right direction. I did something more : I ask the retailer to find me 2 sets of spare brushes pairs if he want to sell me that circular saw. That was epic, because the manufacturer didn't make it easy even if it was a current model. Right when I went to pay and pick my new saw, I open the casing and check if the spares match what was inside the saw. The retailer will remember for its remaining time on Earth.
That is kind of a proof the industry doesn't want us to be able to do that kind of repair. So now I have a circular saw for life.

Ty. This reminds me i need new brushes for my radial arm saw. Another indicator of worn brushes is if the tool is slow or hard to start but bumping it helps it, its the brushes.

I had a bunch of them for dermal when I bought a bunch of nuts bolts and screws from a fella my uncle knows. Was a great find and awesome price too unfortunately someone needed them more than me cause they were taken at some point from my old place. Least I know what to look for when I need them again thanks for the reminder. Cheers.

This doesn't get near enough coverage on the thousands of diy UA-cam channels. Probably thousands of tools getting thrown away every year because of what should be a user replaceable $10 part. Keep up the good work saving us money!

Great video. It reminds me how I saved a lot, fixing alternator brushes myself on the road one night in the country. The brushes only cost about $11 on ebay. It would've cost over $300 to have a shop replace the alt + towing would'e added to that.

This is a very good video, but one thing that you overlooked is that when the brushes fail they often damage the commutator surface. Before putting in the new brushes you should sand down the commutator and clean out the cracks between the bars or the new parts will usually fail quickly.

FANTASTIC video, Leah! This is a small yet critical thing many people don’t know about power tools. I’m so happy you did a video on this. Your explanations were great. As a side note, more power tools are now “brushless”, but for those of us using or buying older/used tools this is a huge tip. Kudos to you for this and all your other excellent videos. Keep up the great work! 👍🏼

    Yay leah
Hey i just replaced the brushes in my ol' Big Arse Bosch Grinder .
I have had the tool for around 20 years plus .
It just started to go a bit fuzzy one day when i'd
    start it up
\. So yeah off to the local power tool specialist and they had a set
    of brushes on the shelf.
    \
So if you ever need some grinding done and you are in my burb.
    Just Hollar !

Great video Leah, packed with valuable info., just what a power tool user needs to know. The one thing I think I can add with confidence is that brushes tend to know when you're about to embark on an important project. They last just long enough to finish your last project and 'konk out' on you just at the start of your next project. LOL! Once again, great video and info.

well slap me thrice and hand me to my mama..... I've taken apart many a tool for one reason or another and have removed those being careful to put them back where I found them because I hadn't a clue what they were or what they did. I have a couple of dremels that have stopped working inexplicably. They weren't dropped or left in the rain or damaged as far as I know. So I guess I know what I'm doing this afternoon. I take it the orientation of the carbon brush is insignificant? it's not like a magnet with a postiive or negative end, right? it just has to fit the casing or compartment appropriate to the tool, right?
you're awesome, you're such an inspiration because you freely share knowledge. This video is 2 years old and still relevent.
It's amazing what we don't know we don't know. Isn't it?
