  • The Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria has asked Moscow for protection. The pro-Russia separatists accuse the pro-Western Moldovan government of waging economic warfare gainst them. Tensions between the two neighbours have been rising ever since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The self-proclaimed Republic of Transnistria is a tiny sliver of land located between Ukraine and Moldova - and falls within Russia's sphere of influence. It broke away from Moldova during the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, but ISN'T internationally recognized.

Except Russia has no means to reinforce Transnistria, Ukraine already offered to interfervene if Moldova request them to remove Russian but was declined. Honestly, if Ukraine clear out Russian army in Transnistria it may help reduce the number of troops needed to station at Moldovan border. Russia has unable to rotate troop off Transnistria since conflict began.

It's nothing new they've asked for support before. Russia has no realistic way of reinforcing the 1500 Russian troops in Transistria. Moldova has about 6500 soilders and 65000 reserve force. Unless Ukraine falls nothing can happen from Russias perspective apart from its troops being wiped out if Moldova decided to act.

I don't see that Russia is currently capable to invade Moldova from Transnistria with the troops they currently have there. To do this, Russia would have to transport more troops, vehicles and equipment by plane, which would certainly be shot down. Since 30 years Transnistria is asking Russia constantly for „protection“ - it’s not a new thing. I also think that Russia has always been quite happy with the status of Transnistria being a pro-Russian unrecognized country - it’s the best place for Russia to do dubious businesses and money laundering.

There was a war between Moldova and Transinistria in the 90s, but Ukrainian and Russian armies condicted a joint peacekeeping operation in 1993 in Russo-Ukrainian populated region of Moldova. The war was frosen, but OF COURSE Moldovan government consider this territory as its own despite the democratic will of the people who want to be independent from them. And I think Moldova wants to conduct something simillar to what Ukraine was trying to do - Ukraine knew that Russia is helping the separatists in the Donbass, and Ukraine wanted to join NATO or at least receive some defense guarantees from United States, in order to cut off Russian supplies to rebels in case of Ukrainian offensive on Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia knew this, and in 2021 there were negotiations between Russia and NATO, but negotiations failed, and Russia was forced by the United States to invade Ukraine, because Russia had no other options. Russia was trying to force Ukraine to negotiations, and in march 2022 there were negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istambul, Turkey. Russia wanted just neutral status of Ukraine and non-joining NATO, and Russia was even ready to give Ukraine all territory back, on the line of february 23rd 2022. Russia made a signature on this document, while Ukraine proposed Russia to "give a signal, that you are ready to respect the accords", and Russia withdrew its forces from Kyiv and Northern Ukraine in start of april 2022. But after Russia did this, Western leaders promised military and economical help to Ukraine, and Boris Johnson promised that Ukraine would take Crimea, so after Russian withdrawal from Northern Ukraine, which was a signal that Russia is ready to respect Istambul peace accords, Ukraine forgot about peace accords and negotiations, and later Russia made the annexations of 4 Ukrainian regions in order to mark that there would be no other chance for Ukraine to negotiate again.
There we can clearly see, that Ukraine wanted to invade Russian separatists regions in the Donbass, but in order to achieve this Ukraine wanted to cut off Russian supplies to rebels by receiving defense guarantees from NATO or United States. What is interesting is that all countries of NATO consider Crimea as a Ukrainian territory, so even if Ukraine could have started an offensive war against Russian separatists and Crimea, NATO countries still could be forced to join the war by 5th NATO article. So Russia had no other choise but to force Ukraine to negotiations with using its army as a threat near Kyiv in march 2022, after negotiations between NATO and Russia failed in 2021.
The same could happen with separatist region of Transinistria, but at now Russia is unable to help them with their defense against Moldovan army.

Indeed, this hardly a mark of a mature political thought on part Transnistria. Moldavia should the right thing by giving Transnistria its independence including its economic independence. "Transnistria wants to be independent" - it is older than Moldova. And it is and always was independent de facto. The only thing that makes it "part of Moldova" is lack of international recognition, because people can't be bothered to look into the matter.
Moldova wages a war against Transnistria for 32 years since 1992. It started for economical reasons (Transnistria was an industrial hub when it was a part of USSR), and now they just can't admit they were wrong, even if there is no real reason to keep it going.

I think you and I are in agreement that Transnistria should be independent. Indeed, the Moldavian government seems to recognize that fact as well, by imposing tariffs on goods being sent to Transnistria. My point is that if Transnistria is serious about being independent from Moldavia, it needs understanding that it can't expect other countries to give a break. Perhaps you can speak to benefits Moldavia would get from trade with Transnistria as compared with joining EU.
